Itunes genius

So i just downloaded itunes 8, who here thinks that enabling the genius feature is apple's sneaky way of rooting out illegal downloads in your library?
for those who dont know- enabling genius is basically like having pandora or last fm in itunes. One of the parts of enabling it entails info about your library being uploaded to apple's site.

thanks for the heads up man.

holy shit thanks man

that won't have anything to do with the new nano genius feature cause the feature seems dope for skiing

while theoretically possible, the actual reason for your library to be uploaded to apple's servers is so the genius can learn from everyone else's library and become better at suggesting songs and building playlists. so, while genius might work pretty well, but still come up with some anomalies(because it is just based on the itunes store), it will only get better.

also, if you are outside of the US, there would be a whole host of legal issues about releasing information to different government and law enforcement agencies. you guys in the US may not be as lucky. I am just speculating though.

There's no way for them to know if its illegal copies really. You could have just bought a whole bunch of cd's and ripped them into itunes for all they know. Genius is safe, don't worry.

If you read the privacy agreement that you have to agree to when first use Genius you'll see that it's completely anonymous and they vow never to give or sell your information to a 3rd party. Basically, Apple can't give your information to anyone.

You're completely safe to use Genius with an entire library of stolen music.

I've also discovered that Genius is pretty useless. Basically all it can do is make a playlist of music that's of the same genre of the song you select and recommend music that is similiar in the Itunes store.

So if you pick a hiphop song it will make a playlist of 25 other hiphop songs and recommend hip hop CD's from the itunes store.

i was sketch about it too but its probably designed that way so the genius algorythems are kept on an apple server and not in every copy of itunes. We send them songs, they send back playlists. That way they protect there 'genius' code from people who would extract it and make something else from it

Maybe?

sounds like some sensible reasoning. Also I feel like they would have had to include a clause in the agreement that mentioned something about track info being sent to the RIAA

sorry for the double post, but i just want to be really careful with this, I got in trouble with the RIAA 6 months ago, but appealed it and got the case closed, and I dont want to deal with them again

the best music player is mediamonkey to me, but i use the zune one because i need to, it sucks. but i dont like itunes very much

Apple is a terrible company. They advertise this program as if it's some super convenient god send that can magically make your library "complete" (discovering music is one of life's simple pleasures), when in all actuality it's just Apple FURTHER pushing buying music from the iTunes store on consumers. Apple is crafty like a fox; very clever but it's just a little tricky to like them...

Find music on your own, don't listen to a computer program that directs you to Apple's wallet.

bastards!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I only have Itunes to download free podcasts and hold my music, i can do that with my old itunes, i dont need a new one.

The Genius feature seems to work pretty well. I've only made a couple playlists but they have been pretty banger

Do you have a rational reason as to why we're living the way we are and why we won't change? You casually use the term capitalistic yet obviously you have some distaste about it. Don't accept things as is. Don't be a sheep.

i think i made a thread about it.
long story short: I went on a downloading spree like i do sometimes when i find a good string of new music, and i downloaded a file that snitched back to the RIAA. I was using my school network (vermont) which made the whole thing way worse. I got a letter from network services at uvm telling me that they were going to get fucked for it, so any penalty exacted on them, they would double on me. Without really knowing what to do, I sent back an email saying I am an avid supporter of buying music-which is half truth, i have a good amount of purchased music, and that a friend thought it would be alright to steal music on my computer. few weeks later i got an email back saying that they closed the case due to lack of evidence.

what do you mean? they already have games for the zune...

unless you mean, theyre releasing the full version of xna? im confused...

You're so caught up in all of it...I guess I was wrong about my whole philosophy. People genuinely like being called "consumers", and they like getting "fucked".

None of it is real. Tangible? Yes. But not real.

Well Elgato (nice alias here), aren't you just a fresh fucking social renegade...somone get this kid a 'che' tee shirt quick! Have you even used the Genius feature yet? Where are these itunes store 'pushes' you're crying about?

I have yet to see a single ad from itunes when i use genuis to make me a new playlist...

**hate aside, it should be known im not normally an apple supporter :P **

If you really were THINKING, you'd realize how futile your efforts will be when you try to FORCE poeple in a negative manner to 'think'. Throwing around far out marketting theories with little overall context makes you look like a crazy and since i'm genally on the same side as you with the Apple love/hate issue, i needed to clearify a few things about my own stance as to not get lumped into the 'crazies' group.

I agree that genius may have some itunes store propaganda hooked into it but what product doesnt these days? You went off on a rant (under and alias too which doesnt help your cause) claiming it was some huge conspiracy theory or something. Thats wack man and people should give you a reality check when you step over the line like that.

Its not bad to be suspicous about the motives being marketing moves and new products, its actually a healthly social practice to be critical of your environment, but to cry wolf and call everyone sheep isnt exactly a proven way to gain support for your ideas either...

I'm just saying your method of hating on genius was sub-par. I know you can do better then that.

Just remember that all those people will also think that your sense of "thinking" is wack if you display it in a ridiculous manner...thus having the exact opposite effect and further fucking yourself down the road :P

something to consider...

I hate itunes. I've always downloaded music from kazaa and bearshare in the past, or just gotten it from burning my friends cds/buying cds, etc. So the other day, I got a brand new laptop, and I didn't want to download bearshare and shit onto it, so i figured I'd use itunes...thus far I havent really used it for anything but putting music i got elsewhere onto my ipod.

So I wanted to make a mixed cd, cause i havent done that in forever, and my music is getting old. I don't have a plug in on my deck for my ipod, and i dont want an ipod fm transmitter, because they sound like shit. All i wanted was a cd. So I go onto itunes, and I purchase all the songs I want on my cd...I didn't realize that when you pay for music on itunes, you don't actually get the music.

It comes in an m4p protected format, that makes it so that the only thing you can do with it, is put it on your ipod. It wont let me burn it onto a cd, which i think is the lamest thing ever! I paid for it, all i want to do is put it on a cd!

So then, i was like..oh well...and i wanted to hook up my computer to my surround sound stereo in my house so that i could listen to my music on the outside speakers. So I hook up the laptop to my tv which plays through my receiver, and apparently the only sound that plays through an HDMI hookup from your laptop to your tv is stuff you play in windows media player. Well, I couldn't listen to my music because it wont play in windows media player, it will only play through itunes and quicktime.

So the moral of the story, is that itunes sucks.

Yes I am aware that there are converters that can change an m4p into an mp3, and it looks like that's what I'll have to do. But I shouldn't have to do that, I should be able to put my paid for music onto a cd...or at least listen to it through whichever program i choose (windows media).

oh and also, we bought a brand new deck for our boad that was "ipod and mp3 compatible"...and it had a USB cord that came off the back, so I used my ipod to USB cable to plug my ipod in and it didnt work, so i look in the owners manual, and its like "all mp3 players will connect through the USB, except ipods..." and so in order to get my ipod to play i had to order an extra ipod adapter sold by apple. Which was really lame, cause it wasnt about the money, it was about the fact that we were out in the middle of the lake, and all i wanted to do was listen to my ipod. So then i order the adapter, thinking it would be just a cord/plug in....but no, its like a huge box that i have to mount underneath the dash that looks ridiculous and i have no room for it. So i returned it, bought a different Mp3 player and have been happier ever since.

Somethings wrong with this picture. I have always been able to burn m4ps onto cds.

The bigger problem is the quality of the music. CD quality has a bitrate of 160. Anything higher than that is really good (I always try to download 192 or above). iTunes sells music at 128.

I don't know. All i know is i have the newest version of itunes, downloaded some songs. Tried to burn them and got "you are attempting to burn songs that are protected..." something or another, i tried moving them to other folders, burning them with other programs, and nada.

but

the rest of my post was "but i didn't even know about the sound quality thing, that's lame!"
