'WASHINGTON - More timber and brush can be cut and cleared with less environmental scrutiny under a law President Bush signed Wednesday. He said the initiative will help protect communities from devastating wildfires.'

alright... so we clear cut MORE areas, allowing them to grow in evenly, creating even MORE forest fires.... wow...

Nice cover for the bill as well... saying it'll help prevent forest fire's. We all know it's to allow timber companies to cut more.

umm clearing out the brush really does help though, so does cutting down trees. Trees need to be cut down everynow and then anyway because we dont let forest fires burn naturally anymore and do their job

Debunking the 'Healthy Forests Initiative'

The Healthy Forests Initiative (HFI) is President Bushs response to the past years forest fires. The initiative is based on the false assumption that landscape-wide logging will decrease forest fires.

This premise is contradicted by the general scientific consensus, which has found that logging can increase fire risk. This disconnect between what the administration says and what science says about logging and fire reveals the administrations true goal which is to use the forest fire issue to cut the public out of the public lands management decision making process and to give logging companies virtually free access to our National Forests. The HFI, if fully enacted, would:

Limit environmental analysis and limit public participation by

(a) excluding environmental analysis for any site-specific project the Forest Service and BLM claim will reduce hazardous fuels, including post-fire salvage projects;

and by

(b) limiting public participation by allowing 'hazardous fuels reduction projects' to be categorically excluded and suspends citizen's rights to appeal projects.

Accelerate aggressive 'thinning' across millions of acres of backcountry forests miles away from communities at risk to forest fires.

well ok that is the sierra club to though.... you need to find something in the middle besides far right bush and far left sierra club. They are both biased, both have some truth to them though.

I've seen a lot of studies that ahve been done showing that some clearing needs to be done, but only in small patches. if the whole forest is clear cut and allowed to grow up at the same time, it's more likely to burn. If, small patches are of different ages, then it'll be LESS likely to burn. Clear cutting allows all the trees to regrow at the same age = more fires.

he's from texas. there aren't any of these new fangles 'trees' there. if there aren't any in texas, not having any on mountains won't matter, right? it's not like they stop erosion or anything.... it's not like they're any good unless they're made into a sturdy chair.......

just another thing to cut out the people from public work. nice. the people have less and less say every day bush is in office. let's hope he loses the election next year.

We all know he's a dumbass...

You gotta remember that this is the man that said (and I quote):

'Space is still a high priority for NASA.'

'...We know that nuclear waste is seaping into the ground water because we can test the water. There is no water on the moon. Therefore, if we send all of our waste to the moon, nobody will be able to test the water to say that it is seeping into the water supply...' (that one is very very abridged... the whole speach is much funnier)

'I promise you I will listen to what has been said here, even though I wasn't here.'

'I am here to make an announcement that this Thursday, ticket counters and airplanes will fly out of Ronald Reagan Airport.'

'You teach a child to read, and he or her will be able to pass a literacy test.'

'I know what I believe. I will continue to articulate what I believe and what I believe — I believe what I believe is right.'

'I know the human being and fish can coexist peacefully.'

'They misunderestimated me.'

'Rarely is the questioned asked: Is our children learning?'

and 'I don't want to run the risk of ruining what is a lovely recession.'

On my way to goddom

you'd be surprised if you wrote down how many stupid things you said in a day, nevermind over the course of a few years.
