It’s all skiing, right?

Ima start this out by saying I may get a lot of flack for this.

I’ve been noticing recently that there’s always something negative brought about with a positive in skiing. For example (even though it’s already been talked about a bunch), when the realski segments came out a bunch of people were stoked on them. A lot of people were also upset that it was a different format. A more recent example is I’ve seen multiple people make threads on NS talking about how they dislike shredders uploading their insta edits to the site even though a lot of the short edits are still insane. If not for NS I wouldn’t be following a lot of people and seeing how gnarly they’re getting.

Guess I just wanted to throw the idea out there that at the end of the day if an edit is a minute or less or a short film, or if there’s 3 feet of pow on top of rocks rather than 3 inches of ice on top of concrete it’s all just skiing, right?

I hate swerve skiing and even the style of most people with no poles and I’ve been learning to appreciate it more and some peoples style is growing on me. Still fuck the bunch hate that arm shit everytime they land just flailing along with their stupid turning with poles looks so dumb to me and forced. They didn’t used to do this in their old films

Also tried skiing no poles a bit and more swervy stuff and it’s Lowkey fun. I also think I look shit doing it

While they may just seem like some assholes and their opinions, these are a series of checks and balances between artists and their crafts. The input of these various assholes dictates the direction of the sport and trends within the sport. Its what keeps us all from becoming robots. Without them, we’d all be wack as fuck.

or you can just regurgitate the old “good vibes only bro have fun with your friends that’s what it’s all about” platitude that everyone on here parrots.

I also use to think no poles looked silly asf but after rage breaking my poles and no poling for a few days i also low key loved it. Think it sort of just made me more mindful of really staying on top of myself and landing bolts.

I will now always land like a boner with my arms glued to my side, no matter the trick. I'll be one shredsauce lookin mother fucker

I tried no poling some park laps. It was chill. But not applicable to the rest of the mountain for me. Because I actually pole plant.

Maybe we should hate on every little stupid thing?

First response: fuck the bunch I hate how they move their arms

Same plus I feel more balanced in the park prolly just a mental thing with that tbh

Maybe two pairs of poles whole movie. Mostly vishnu/on3p guys.

Try to tell me it sucked

Liked the vibe and maybe not all the style in it. But I do respect the skiing and skill and filming

I used to hate on no poles, then I went no poles in park for years, now I’m back to poles in the park. Basically, I don’t even know what I like.

And honestly, nobody cares AT ALL outside of our little microcosm. Try talking to anyone about swerve skiing and they will be like “wtf are you talking about and why do I care?”. it’s laughable when I think about it. Like honestly, why do we care so much? We’re all so up each other’s assholes about things like hoodies lol

I think with age, Jason Levinthal’s advice is really relevant: “It’s just skiing!”.

So let’s just all have fun.

Skiierman alt account?

Im still pissed at Gorilla Style. I mean what the fuck who wants to ski bent over like that? And now we have all the kids in the park doing the same thing thinking they are Tanner Hall.

In other words, we have been having this kind of discussion since 2004. In any case, its cool to be stoked on our sport but its also fair to be critical. This is our culture and passion and if its going in a bad direction we should have the responsibility to call it out. For instance, Instagram/TikTok edits are in a way ruining ski movies because all the shots are out there already and the art of a sweet edit is being lost. Unless someone calls it out, kids just assume that is the norm and we lose an awesome aspect of our culture. Tanner Hall even called this out in his recent podcast where NS had the opportunity to corner the ski media market and let it slide and instagram took over. I dropped the ball in my own right with Andrew Wickes when we could have launched Tricktapes.com back in 2009 but didnt put it together.

That is why we have Skierman actually. Yeah he is an asshole but he puts himself out there to be that extreme example of calling out BS or things he doesnt like in the sport. Sometimes its funny to share a view with him and to see the 'no filter fuck the consequences' example of it being said. In any case, dont take his shit personally.

If you look for the negativity, you find the negativity.

When I ski, or watch a vid, or scroll the forums, the negative stuff doesn't even register. It's all about what you let affect you imo.

except that is what it’s all about... and the art is there to capture and record the feeling of fun, play, experimentation, encouragement and friendly competition amongst the homies, pushing each other to reach new heights.

You would never see the innovation without the creative elements of fun. Even I may think some aspects of “swerve” looks a little off, but it’s that looseness and experimentation that has led to some of the most impressive and innovative tricks/clips in the history of the sport - and not just in bunch projects. Think of all The butters/reverts/air pretzels that we’ve seen across all disciplines of the sport, comps, Urban, and BC. The bunch didn’t completely invent those ideas, but they REALLY ran w them.

you wouldn’t have seen that same emergence if magnus & co had ever cared that ppl thought his style was whack, he’s doing what he loves and what feels good, and it has elevated to sport. Same thing with an innovator like delorme... ppl cant even understand it at first, but it’s undeniably dope. You don’t get there without the fun!

Used to hate swerve skiing stuff, experimented with arm movements first day out this season and went pretty hard swerve twoards the end of this year lol. Get plenty of weird looks hand dragging a revert and stuff like that but honestly its way more fun to just cruise when you apply stuff like that so I dont really care. My friend is kinda andri style kinda but everytime I see him try some weird swerve thing I had done it makes me smile lol

I don't really love to watch the act of swerve skiing, but a lot of the time they seem to enjoy it way more than other styles, which has a good vibe and is still great to watch
