It could...happen to any one of you.

I am writing this because I have a story that I think is worth writing about. I think it is worthy for two reasons; one so that we can bring more awareness to TBI and the other because people need to know that this can happen to anyone.

Professional snowboarer, Danny Toumarkine, just suffered a TBI (traumatic brain injury) on January 3rd. He was on a filming trip with Shreddy Times in Teton Pass, MT and hit a small fun little jump on the side of the trail and fell into a group of trees. No one saw the actual fall, but when his friends arrived to help him, he was lying face down unconscious exhaling blood with every respiration. It was every bit as terrifying as it sounds.

Fast forward to today, January 12th. Danny has had two craniotomies. He is currently heavily sedated and carefully monitored. He has a tracheostomy- which is a tube that runs through your neck and is hooked up to a ventilator that breaths for you. He has a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy, or a PEG- which is a tube that runs from the outside of his abdomen and into his stomach. A piece of Danny's skull is being stored just under the skin in his abdomen. When the brain swelling subsides the bone will be placed back in his head. At the moment the only thing separating his brain from the outside world is the skin flap covering the area the bone was removed from.

It has been nine days since Danny arrived in the ICU. On a good day Danny is able to wiggle his toes and move his arms. Nothing is certain about what will happen an hour from now. His vitals are constantly changing. Even if he does make it out of this predicament doctors are unsure what the brain damage will be.

The reason I am bringing this up is because I think a huge issue needs to be looked at in the ski and snowboard world: Helmets. Danny was not wearing a helmet at the time of injury and chances are that the outcome of the situation would have been considerably different if he had been wearing one. There is a big problem with helmets though. Plain and simple, they just aren’t cool. Well let me tell the world about uncool. Uncool is watching your friend nearly die while executing a maneuver that I have watched him do flawlessly for the last 15 years. Uncool is sitting in the ICU for 9 days and expecting to be here for AT LEAST another week if things go smoothly.
I can assure anyone reading this that if you experienced this first hand you would absolutely change your entire perspective on wearing a helmet.
As I sit here in Great Falls, MT on the fifth floor of the Benefis-Hospital in room 5109 watching Danny and listening to the sound of the ventilator breathing for him all I can do is wait. This is by far the hardest thing that I've ever been through. When he wakes up it will be the hardest thing he will most likely ever go through. Save yourself and your loved ones from this awful misery...Buy yourself a helmet if you don't already have one.
Danny's brother started a website to follow his progression throughout this experience. If you would like to follow his progress, share your thoughts, or donate to his recovery check out http://http://dannyisthebomb.com/
I know this post is blunt and real, but I don't want this to happen to any of you.

That is horrible, I'm always wearing a helmet when I'm doing anything other than backyard. Vibes, I hope things go ok.

That's probably the worst thing I've ever heard of on NS. Vibes don't do much in this kind of situation, but this is really awful.

I really wish this story was on his site somewhere. When I saw the thread earlier with the girl who was making and selling hats for donation, I became interested and went to the site. But I just became confused since no where did it give a story on what happened, and why donations and thoughts were being asked for. All my best to his family and friends, a tragedy for sure, I hope he has a full recovery.

+vibes about your friend.

i usually wear a helmet, but as of this season mine no longer fits so i ditched it.

++++vibes

i always hate hearing stories like this and i can't imagine what it's like to be watching him go through this

i don't want to try to threadjack at all but i had a pretty scary experience last year. i tried a backflip for the first time but ended up cutting my head open by hitting the tail of the ski without a helmet. no where near as bad but it put things in perspective well enough. after this hearing this i'm always skiing with my helmet even though i always have after my little accident and i'm sure as hell pushing for everyone i know to wear one. some people say helmets are uncool but i've grown to love the feel and the look of them especially when you're wearing baggy stuff, it just seems to even things out :p

def thinking of him and his family and friends

+morevibes

I don't know how it is in other areas but at my home mountain in West Virginia people without helmets look out of place. The amount of people wearing them has exploded in recent years which is a trend i can really get behind.

Helmets are great, always wear one!

++MAJOR vibes to a fellow shredder, I hope he recovers asap so he can get back to what he loves doing!

wow that's rough

I always wear a helmet, simple things can make you fall and it doesn't take much to hurt yourself.

vibes..
and i wear a helmet all the time when im skiing. and plus i might lose my job if i dont. but my job has no bearing on safety.. i would be wearing one anywase...

I used to be a ski racer, with my brother, who was quite the guy. i dont want to go in detail but he has gotten a decent amount of concussions and had some mad bails skiing. skiing, rugby and football have given him head injuries, the doctor didnt let him play football this year, imagine without a helmet he would defiantly not be playing any sports. this isnt just a one time crash thing. most concussions (80%) go un noticed. like slipping on ice or just falling off a jib and hitting ur head. you may not know u have one. and thats way more dangerous. thats where people get really hurt, the second blow.

you may hit your head, then try to tough it through thinking it was nothing, then fall again and really fuck yourself. please dont be one of those kids, it doesn't take much. Wear a helmet.

Vibes, I hate reading about stuff like this. It can happen to anyone at any time. I hope no one else has to go through this.

Vibes man. My parents made me wear one when I started so now I just feel naked and line something is missing when I ski without one.

Just read through the responses to this post and I'm excited how many people responded saying that they will wear their helmets!! Danny just made some progress. I posted it up on his blog. www.dannyisthebomb.com

helmets were always cool

nobody likes a TBI though, hope everything goes well

did you say they were storing his skull fragment in his abdomen?

Yup, not fragments though. They took a piece out of his skull, about the size of your hand and are storing it in his abdomen. When the swelling goes down, they will put the piece of skull back.

That is very sad to hear about. i personally always wear a helmet, and I think they are comfortable, and look good too. My park requires helmets, and I encourage everyone to wear one.

Vibes to Danny, you, and family. we're all here for you

+ Vibes to his recovery

I always wear my helmet when I ski, as someone said more about others collecting me than me crashing when i'm not training. Just got out of the hospital with a bad concussion that probably would have been like this had I not been wearing a helmet.

One of the saddest things if he recovers (Which I hope he does) is he's going to be going through life with the regret of not wearing a helmet this one time, thinking what if I wore my helmet would this have been avoided..

hope everything gets better for him.

Another lesson though. Everyone needs to pay attention. You just gotta wear a helmet. Simple as that. Might not prevent all injuries, but it'll help a lot. And these days they make good looking and extremely comfortable helmets. Not like when i was a kid and they looked like bowling balls with a hole for your face.

Holy shit... VIBES!!!!!! I wish a speedy and full recovery to Danny!

I always wear a helmet... Deck 'em out with stickers and such, and they look sick! I'd rather look foolish than suffer any kind of head injury anyways.

If you guys are down, we're trying to raise money for Danny's recovery and for TBI. There is a section on www.dannyisthebomb.com labeled gear. There are stickers, those live strong bracelets (customized for Danny) and T-shirts, as well as some hats that I've been making...if you feel so inclined to support Danny through this process, Danny and his family would be sooo grateful. Thanks for the good vibes!!

One of my cousins good friends fell skateboarding without a helmet. 1/4 of his skull removed and put in a freezer for 6 months. ICU for 3 of those months. He now has to wear a specially designed helmet all day and can never play sports, because one small hit will kill him. I always wear my helmet after that

CR was wearing one, he had that big season-ending head injury a few years back and ever since he always wore his helmet. i don't think a standard helmet could have prevented what happened to CR, it's a was pretty big fall onto rocks.
