It could...happen to any one of you.

I am writing this because I have a story that I think is worth writing about. I think it is worthy for two reasons; one so that we can bring more awareness to TBI and the other because people need to know that this can happen to anyone.

Professional snowboarer, Danny Toumarkine, just suffered a TBI (traumatic brain injury) on January 3rd. He was on a filming trip with Shreddy Times in Teton Pass, MT and hit a small fun little jump on the side of the trail and fell into a group of trees. No one saw the actual fall, but when his friends arrived to help him, he was lying face down unconscious exhaling blood with every respiration. It was every bit as terrifying as it sounds.

Fast forward to today, January 12th. Danny has had two craniotomies. He is currently heavily sedated and carefully monitored. He has a tracheostomy- which is a tube that runs through your neck and is hooked up to a ventilator that breaths for you. He has a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy, or a PEG- which is a tube that runs from the outside of his abdomen and into his stomach. A piece of Danny's skull is being stored just under the skin in his abdomen. When the brain swelling subsides the bone will be placed back in his head. At the moment the only thing separating his brain from the outside world is the skin flap covering the area the bone was removed from.

It has been nine days since Danny arrived in the ICU. On a good day Danny is able to wiggle his toes and move his arms. Nothing is certain about what will happen an hour from now. His vitals are constantly changing. Even if he does make it out of this predicament doctors are unsure what the brain damage will be.

The reason I am bringing this up is because I think a huge issue needs to be looked at in the ski and snowboard world: Helmets. Danny was not wearing a helmet at the time of injury and chances are that the outcome of the situation would have been considerably different if he had been wearing one. There is a big problem with helmets though. Plain and simple, they just aren’t cool. Well let me tell the world about uncool. Uncool is watching your friend nearly die while executing a maneuver that I have watched him do flawlessly for the last 15 years. Uncool is sitting in the ICU for 9 days and expecting to be here for AT LEAST another week if things go smoothly.I can assure anyone reading this that if you experienced this first hand you would absolutely change your entire perspective on wearing a helmet.
As I sit here in Great Falls, MT on the fifth floor of the Benefis Hospital in room 5109 watching Danny and listening to the sound of the ventilator breathing for him all I can do is wait. This is by far the hardest thing that I've ever been through. When he wakes up it will be the hardest thing he will most likely ever go through. Save yourself and your loved ones from this awful misery… Buy yourself a helmet if you don’t already have one.

Danny's brother started a website to follow his progression throughout this experience. If you would like to follow his progress, share your thoughts, or donate to his recovery check out www.dannyisthebomb.com.
I know this post is blunt and real, but I don't want this to happen to any of you.

crazy man same thing happened to my good friend on a longboard last spring. his name was dan too. he has not recovered. he can move his fingers and toes, and sometimes more on a good day. he can't talk or focus his eyes very well. it's very sad. a helmet would've done wonders.

dude, sorry to hear. best wishes.
on the helmet thing, i dont think there's anywhere near the stigma in skiing as there is in snowboarding. all of my friends wear helmets and i couldn't imagine getting out there without mine. i have to disagree when you say they aren't 'cool'. i think they are. and i think they look awesome. it used to be a case of you either wear a helmet if you're a beginner and therefore you stack a lot or you wear a helmet if you're pro because you take big risks. but now virtually everyone wears a helmet.

Best hopes for him and a smooth recovery. Thanks for letting us know, it gives me even more the reason to wear my helmet (as if there wasn't enough)

Seems that alot of serious head injuries happen..hopefully it doesnt take much longer for people to relize to wear helmets.. Similar story, over the summer i was skateboarding with two friends. Nothing serious just crusing aroung, not bombing any giant hills or anything. We get to a small size hill and i was going down with out a helmet on and got speed wobbles. Flew off the board and hit my head hard. My friends went to check on me, because i was laying on the ground and having a sesure. They called 911 and the police and ambulance arrived shortly. At the hospital they found out my skull had been hit hard enough where blood was filling up inside my head. They cut my head open and drained the blood out of my head. Spent a week in the hospital and could not do any physical activity for a month and some things not for two months. I was pretty lucky, it could have been alot worst. In the hospital i could not do any kind of simple math and my friends and family thought i was going to have long term mental problems. Fortunatly i do not, and am recovered completely. So even if you say to urself well i dont need a helmet im not doing anything crazy put one on anyway because anything can happen.

that's brutal

head injuries are nothing to fuck with but it seems so hard for some people to understand that

Yeah all it takes is once. I've thought about not wearing my helmet as much but after reading this, I don't wanna take my chances.

+++++ Vibes..
This video of his is to this day one of my favorite snowboarding videos. In fact it was one of the first videos i really remember. This story hits home./static/images/flash_video_placeholder.png

Yeah. There are more and more head injuries every year now. I don't know how people can still easily brush them off. Especially after well known ones like CR or Asher Crank.
But then again it is hard to force people to do anything. They control their lives and the choices they make are ultimately up to them.
The positive side is that these injuries are helping turn a lot of people into helmet users.

++vibes! ive always wore a helmet though and i personally like the look of them. And they keep you safe =D

i actually had a very similar thing happen to me skating in the summer. not to the same extent but just bombing a mellow hill and my wheel hung up on something and i went straight to my head on concrete. second bad concussion in under a year for me.

as for danny, best of luck in the recovery, this is a really shitty situation that nobody wants to be in/see there friends in.

Wear a helmet, there are hundreds of reasons why you should and hardly a single logical reason why you shouldn't. Vibes to your friend, hope he'll make a good recovery.

how did the ski patrol handle it? your views?

i only ask because i trained with a couple of them this past fall.

Fuck dude, I couldn't believe that this happend. ++vibes. I consider lapping a few times without a helmet, but now there is zero chance.
Also, you can't put stickers on a beanie.

Just reading through the responses from this post and I am glad that so many of you are going to wear your helmets!! I just updated his blog on www.dannyisthebomb.com with some good news...check it.

PS regarding helmets...if your helmet has taken alot of abuse over the past few years, get a new one. they are structurally designed to take one large impact, so that concussion that it saved you from may very well happen the next time you fall like that on the same helmet.
I say that because I was concussed to the point of having to re-learn how to walk WITH a beat helmet.
Lets all stay safe!

WRONG

They are still considered uncool by some because people keep repeating this. What is it that makes a helmet uncool? Most of the "cool" pro skier nowadays wear helmets. Modern helmets look good. I think that helmets have definitely became cool and that is a great thing.

That sounds super gnarly. Always sorry to hear about a fellow shredder getting hurt. This has convinced me to get a new helmet too.

*Remember most helmets only last 1 impact or about 3 years*

mad vibes going out to you and him. This'll make me think twice on the few days I "just don't feel like wearing a helmet today".

Someone could probably give a better explanation than me but I think it has to do with how the chemicals in the hard foam break down. I could be wrong, but I heard it from someone I trust...

Yea I'm pretty sure helmets now a days in skiing (spesh park) is right behind moto x and dh biking for helmet exceptance.

Lets be honest, are helmets really still uncool? It's not 1998 anymore.

Sure hope your friend recovers quickly and completely.

Been wearing a helmet for years now, Vibes to Dan and hope he has a speedy recovery because he sounds like an awesome guy

+mega vibes man. some people still think its "uncool" to wear a helmet and they are for beginiers only. is it really better to look cool, or save yourself the injury. it only takes 1 fall or anything to turn everything in the wrong direction. hope he gets back to normal and can get back to the hill.
