Is "Unschooling" Dangerous?

Hey team,

I have a friend of mine, and I think she has gone off the deep end. She has been telling me about this unschooling trend she saw on social media, and I think it is dangerous. She says she wants her kids to learn about the things they want to learn and that schools just spread propaganda?? I'm not really sure what to do as her kids are not neglected and she has a stable job. She does like to think that she is smarter than everyone else and loves posting quotes from philosophers on her socials. I kind of think I should just butt-out and let her live her life. But when kids are involved... I dunno...

She’s basically saying she wants them to learn her “propaganda”. Not much you can do about it. Parents are gonna brainwash their kids if they want to

how do you think kids dont get vaccinated? this kinda shit. fortunately the % of people like this is pretty small, could chalk it up to some low level darwinism.

Sounds about right - she is so deep into the 'momtok' scene, and I find it disturbing that this level of anti-intellectualism is being propagated.

i know a guy who used to work for me and he was a pharmacist and had a wife and kids and a house with property and animals and doing everything he was told by society to be happy and he fuckin wasnt. he got a divorce and moved into a studio and started working at ski resorts. he pulled his kid out of school and they snowboard, race cars, mountain bike, etc. he enrolled them in some bogus online school that he does for the kids in less than 30 mins each day. his priority is experiences with his kids and is banking on their social skills to get them through life. part of me thinks its noble and the kids are clearly having a blast. the other part of me is concerned about these kids being set up for a bright future with no formal education.

Sounds like she wants to spread her own ideology and narrative to her kids. Those kids are probably going to be idiots.

I don't think school is just full of propaganda but some things should be added. More economics, more about political system and ideologies, more philosophy and something that doesn't kill the creativity of kids.

Guys why would u want the kids to follow the gouvernments deep state propaganda gangily??? you know theyr making the kids AND FROGS! gay. Wtf???

pretty sad truth in america is that atrazine does actually turn male frogs into female with the amount of estrogen it causes them to produce. Alex Jones RIGHT AGAIN!

Arabic numerals are too dangerous, let's teach them the 'merican numerals.

Kids can't even write numbers these days cause of tablets. If I was the leader of a country, I would subsidise schools to give all the kids ReMarkables so they can write.

Teachers are having seminars to use AI for both planning and teaching. If you have a decent public school system, great. For people in inner cities and rural areas the quality can diminish greatly.

Its not crazy to not want to put up with some of the clownery.

Ai is a cancer to the education system.

I love it. Especially in history since I have trouble understanding what 200 year old text or picture is trying to say about shit. It's also nice in classes that you don't have to care about.

AI is going nowhere so it should be taught to use as a tool. Prolem comes when kids don't think at all.

Got kicked out of a seminar at work this spring because I asked the AI evangelist how a LLM was going to approximate my 14 years of managing classrooms and individualizing lesson plans for students with processing disorders. I didn’t get to ask how much background he or the vaporware he’s selling had in the fields of linguistics, pedagogy and developmental psychology.

Throw all the prompts in the world at it; it’s going to spit out terrible slop I’d have to edit into a functional plan for one class when I can write an entire unit plan in less time.

chatgpt is high potential and the future for sure. currently and actually more so with this 4o update, i noticed its been giving inaccurate garbage with such confidence too lmao. should be in congress really.

i rarely use it so maybe some experts are better at getting the info they want with the right prompts.

well yeah but sometimes theres things a simple search wont do well. i would like to use it for bulk things like piecing together a costume piece by piece or show me all year round ski resort jobs or if i lack detail like ski movie with x song in it, etc. i wouldn’t use it for simple things like metro population of denver vs salt lake, etc.

Bro this is too true economics is really important but unless you study for it specifically you have no knowledge on how the biggest tool of life is used the last time I had economics was in middle school and its been neglected so much. Politics are still talked about tho.

I want to disagree with this because homeschooling, in theory, is okay. and the shit they teach us in public schools is not any better. but they always turn out weird, shame.

thats cause the curriculum might not be the greatest at either but at public school you learn social skills and are forced to navigate in a much more complex web of relationships. homeschool kids are weirdos because they only know how to navigate a handful of personalities from a general lack of exposure.

i would suspect that post covid that more homeschool kids will be on par with their classmates as they all had to do homeschooling for a bit. plus kids these days are all in their phones and can’t really hold a concession anyway so its like a whole generation of homeschooled kids anyway.

They probably wont, I know a few kids who are in athletic schools in Japan, they take full courses and ironically are the few high school students I know who can actually speak English to a semi functional level. But the unschooling thing, 99% of these parents are teaching things that can be taught in a week, and they want to do it cheaper then public or private school, unless you're actually accredited to teach and capable of providing good education, it is absolutely not cheaper.

I was home schooled for a few years when I was in middle school cause I was very behind by fifth grade, I did a lot of ski racing and did summer ski programs, but my parents threw a lot of money at it, I had teachers who were qualified to teach me subjects and tutor me, or an online teacher doing these things. It was nice and it was flexible, I had time off when my friends had time off at school so I still got to hang out with all my friends. I one hundred percent admit that I don't see a way that I can provide the time or have the financial means to provide that same level of education I was provided so I probably wont do even if I really wanted to.

The moms that do this are just control freaks most of the time and are setting there kids up for failure. You gotta learn how to navigate conflicting or different opinions not just what momma says.

There are some situations where homeschooling is valid. but not many imo.
