Is this fair?

So I feel like I'm getting the short end of the stick.

I'm in a nursing program at my UNI. Every Thursday/Friday we are at the hospital from 6:45am to 3pm. At the beginning of the year, based on your grades, you get to pick you placements. For my placements, I chose to be in one hospital first semester, then this other hospital next semester that is in a nearby town.

First semester was good. Since the hospital I was SUPPOSED to be in second semester was a 1hr drive away, I moved to my parents place over Xmas break. My parents place is about 25 minutes away from the hospital I scheduled myself to be in.

About a week ago, the nursing practice placement coordinator changed my placement to a hospital without even asking me. This hospital, the one I have now been changed to for second semester, is in the complete opposite direction. It's over 1hr20mins away. I explained that I moved in order to be neart eh hospital I scheduled myself for, but she won't change my schedule back to the way I set it!

So now this is what I'm facing.. Getting up at 4:30am to leave my house at 5am to drive to clinical and be there until 3pm. Then staying after 3pm to research patients. Leaving at about 4pm, getting home at about 6:30pm then memorizing all my patient medications (dose, side effects, actions, illness they're treating, etc).

I'm not mad because this will be lame. I can handle the work. I'm mad because I'm be screwed exponentially more than any other student.

This was broken up into sections. I guess that didn't work since I typed on my iphone

This blows. But with future jobs in mind cite this stressful experience (docters have a stressful job) and make the best out of it.

Was it "set" that you'd be at the hospital you chose for second semester? If she boned you and it was set, then no, its not fair.

If, for some reason, there's some stipulation that said they could change it, then it's still pretty shitty, but not unfair.

I'm well aware of this. I'm not trying to come across as a whiny boy with a petty problem. I'm just wondering if people agree that I have reasonable ground to address the head of nursing.

As for moving back, I wish. That would shorten the drive to. About an hour. Which would be far more doable. But the place is already rented to a new person. So I'm hooped.

Anyways, like I said. I can handle this. I'm not breaking down or anything. But who takes home the 2/10 when they have a fair shot at a solid 7? If I can get better, aka a hospital 30 mins away, I'll go for it.

well it doesn't hurt to contact the head nursing person about it since it was a random change that you didn't agree to.

I don't understand why you have to ask NS before you do it though

no but this is a fair lol

I contacted the lady who is in charge of the practice placements. But she said she can't do anything about it. So I'm not sure how I'd feel about going over her and talking to her superior.

sorry dude....wasn't really trying to be a dick. that really does suck. i've done the whole hour plus commute each way and it fucking blows. i'd definitely contact them....

Yes, it sucks. But guess what, your placement coordinator has the authority to change where you are regardless whats convenient. May have been a dick thing to do, but such is life. With nursing as your expected profession, early mornings and long days arent such a bad thing to get accustomed to now. As it sounds, these are your rounds, and you wont have to put up with it for much more than a semester. So take your medicine, do your best, and take it as an opportunity to better yourself and become used to facing adversity.

It's not a huge issue. Im just curious as to why my spot was given to someone else? What were their reasons? There was no courtesy in the matter. Not even a heads up. If they had told me about this, I wouldn't have gone to the effort and moved.

Anywho, such is life. I'm a hard worker, I'll be totally fine getting through it. Just a headache. Also my dumbass boss wants me to come in for 2hr shifts. Who the hell wants two hour shifts! Haha fml.

Maybe I can rent at a hostel Thursday nights.

Yeah, you're handling it basically the exact way you've got to haha. I'm going into health care as well and just expect things like this to happen at more than one point in my life. A total fml moment, just gotta bite the bullet and go with it though.

No idea why the spot would be given to someone else, kind of odd. The total lack of informing you about the situation is odd, but usually for something like that there's a good reason behind it that they can't always disclose.

If you have a students union you may be able to talk to them too, worked for a buddy of mine for a lab however it was a fairly different situation.

That sucks, thats honestly something they should be willing to change up for you. Especially considering your were enrolled otherwise. I would find/print some proof of that and go to the department head or whoever is above that person you spoke to and give them your story.

My personal philosophy with school is, if your paying for it and they screw up you should not have to endure a problem they created for you. Your paying for an experience, as much as you need to work for your degree they should be working for/with you to make it as beneficiary of an experience as possible.

Bottom line, your giving them money for education they should be catering to your experience. Not making you spend as much money as your would for tuition in gas.

I guess if you can't fix it you can always claim your driving miles on your tax return.
