Is there such a thing as sponsored photographers?

I know skiers are sponsered but are there any photographers that are sponsered by any film companies?

professional photographers are definitely in existance

but i don't know if camera companies give out fre cameras and stuff
 
I know Burton sort of sponsors photogs. They give them all the free stuff they want and pay them to shoot for them as well. Pretty badass.
 
you def don't know anything. it's not like he can tell anyone there how to do things or anything
 
either way chris o'connel seems kinda like a legendary name in ski photography. Im not so sure he would need a sponsorship but im sure that companies want him around
 
i doubt companies give away cameras to photographers. but do pay them to take pictures. what a crazy world we live in.

Most photog's buy their own camera equipment. The top guys can get sponsored by ski companies though.

Markewitz is hooked with Volkl/Tecnica for example.
 
uhm...yea that's what happens with pictures. some company wants a picture of one of their riders taken. they get a photographer to take it, and pay him for it, thus sposoring him. candide didn;t just get a bunhc of his french buddies to climb hte trees and take pics of his massive tree jib
 
Last season capita gave a pro model snowboard to all the major photographers in the snowboard industry...but if you mean by like canon or nikon, i don't think they get free shit
 
NO NO NO photographers who follow one ski team arnt sponsored by that ski team. they are HIRED. and as far as camera makers go. they do not give away cameras to photographers. they have a product. they dont need the name of a photagropher to sell them. the product sells based on performance. skis sell because an athlete you respect or admire rides them. you think the athlete is cool therefore you think the skis are cool. no photagropher will buy a camera because another photagropher has one. plus very very few photagrophers will stick to one company for all their camera needs. you might have a Canon which are the best at small format. then they probably will have a medium format camera which will be a Hassleblad and then if your a fashion photographer you might have a large format camera for your studio which might be a Sinar X
 
seems to me that people could look up to a photogropher and want to use the equipment that they use

but on the other hand, there is so much stuff dealing with cameras and all that stuff that it doesnt seem like they could stick to one company
 
WHy does everyone always bring up O'Connell and act like he's god of ski photgraphy. Mattais Fredrikkson(sp) is the best ski photog out there period. He's so much better that O'Connell it's not even funny.
 
ok you get the dumbass award. the chris o'connell we're talking about is oc. the ns chris is cko. cko takes super super sick pictures also. that shot of colby from whistler is still my desktop at work.

don't even start a oc is better than mattias thing or say either sucks. they're both AMAZING photographers. you don't get to see a lot of the shit that they don't put up on their websites and isn't published. i've seen stuff oc has done in person then seen the shots later and i can't believe how he can make stuff look so so so so so good. like be outside and make it look like he was shooting on a green screen in a studio.

there are a ton of great ski photographers. photos are definitely my favorite part of any magazine.
 
once you are a pro photographer you'll know that there are no that nothing is what it seems.

i work in the mountain bike industry as a filmer and although i'm not sponsored I am the team filmer for 2 different companies. I'm hired by them to film road trips and as a result I get free bikes and gear....but from that end its nothing formal.

I got a hookup on a SICK computer because of a sponsorship deal but that was only for a video.

basically once you get to the point where you are well known in your industry doors will open. but until you get to that point you won't know the doors even exist.
 
longboardskater basically hit it on the bullet... if you're a pro photog, you've probably got working relationships with several companies, and depending on that relationship, you might get some gear from time to time. I'm sure that some photogs have fairly constant work with some ski companies and probably receive product when they want it, but technically its not "sponsorship."

like someone else mentioned above, camera companies do occasionally "sponsor" photographers, but to get hooked up with that you have to be THE BEST, either at photography or sucking dick. i'd be surprised if more than a very select few ski photographers receive free product from camera companies.
 
It seems to me there's a general rule among photogs that you try as hard as fucking possible to avoid getting gear in exchange for work... ie; "I can't feed my family with skis"... otherwise you're sort of tainting the market for other people who consider it a profession and want to make something vaguely resembling a living from it.

Unless your mike basich, pro photogs are NOT sponsored by any companies. We pay for all of our camera gear, just like everyone else, we pay for all of our film just like everyeone else.

Being a photographer is all about running a business, you have to managae your costs, for film, travel, gear etc, and hope fully produce enough kick ass images to sell to the various magazines and ski companies to cover your costs and hopefully make enough cash to get by. That being said one you get to a certian level, magazies will send you assignemtns to various places and reinburse you for your costs. You still have to pay for everything upfront, and wate to get paid back, then hopefully one those trips you will prodduce enough images to keep the magazine happy and just maybe they will send you on another assigment.

As far as ski compnaies etc go, its all about selling them images for as much $$$ as you can as thats your bread and butter as a photog. Ski companies goggle companies etc are not interested in giving you free products, unless they think that they can do it in excahnge for free photos, some thing that no photographer should ever be willing to do, infact if word gets out that you do that, expect to get black listed by those photogs that are also photo editors....

The only time that we get free product is when the company gives it to us with the expectation that we will use it to out fit our athletes with it for various photo shoots. If we dont produce results, compnaies will no longer give us free gear to give to our athletes.

However we always get free "Comped" lift tickets wich means anytime that we show up at a resort we get free lift tickets, however we are expected to be working while we are there in exchange for our free tickets.

Hopefully this clears some things up.

I got a free bag this year from Kata. But that's a fluke. There a small company starting out and I got lucky.

I know sometimes you van be part of a pool where you can rent stuff for really cheap. But that's it.

I think some real pro photogs get some free shit, but you probabky need to be the man. Like let,s say your some big shot NY fashion photog and nikon asks you to say that you are using their shit.

yea pretty sure "sponsored" isnt available but its a "JOB" for some companies. i double as the photographer and graphic designer for the company i work for.
 
Im not sure about sports photographers, but i know there are alot of "sponsored" Photojournalists as well as Commercial Photographers.

Those guys are not really sponsored. Bassically there either paid a nominal fee your there apearnce in an Ad, or if your really the shit, Canon and Nikon will hire a few photogs and list them on there staff. But for 99.99% of all of the pros out there you have to pay the same prices as everyone else.

Rember being a pro-photog is all about running a business, we buy the gear that we need to get the results that are required of this. We look at camera gear the same way a mechanic looks at his tools.

As far as ski photogs go, there are a handfull that are paid a retainer, to shoot for one company specifically. In short these guys are independent contractors hired by the company to produce the images needed for that comanies advertising.
