Is there still an edge given to those who upload straight to NS?

Seems like all of the videos on the homepage lately have been from Vimeo. I thought there was supposed to be a benefit to using the NS player?

There was never an "edge" to uploading straight to NS, votes/comments/views have always been weighted the same.

It used to be you could only get VOTD if you uploaded straight to NS, but VOTD has fallen off.

There was a time where there was an edge meaning you could only upload to the NS Player.

After we re-enabled Embeds, the main "edge" was VOTD + NSTV. VOTD used to generate a massive spike in views for both that video, and the others following it in the NSTV channel. NSTV was a great product, but we were only able to make its advanced features by using strictly NS direct upload videos.

However, that was in the time where Media Center computers were the hotness and mobile was a tiny percentage of overall traffic. As NSTV aged, and as the habits of users coming from social changed - both VOTD and NSTV faded away in their importance.

As well, back then an Embed wasn't a video to the site - it was just an embed object. We couldn't do anything with it fancier than display it on the page so all the advanced stuff we can do in the back end was worthless. Nowadays, the major embed platforms allow you to control almost every aspect of the video and use their APIs extensively. So an embedded video now allows us to do loads more than we could before.

Finally, we were only able to do our revenue share programs via the NS player. If you wanted to qualify for or participate in those, we needed your video in our system. Again - with the changes to the external players it allows us to track all the data we need for it to work.

Henceforth the attitude around here is that we're pretty platform agnostic. Upload it wherever you feel like it, and let the Newschoolers platform do what it does.

So how does that work now? Does ns still pay for content? Say if you embedded a youtube video on ns, would you get paid for it?

For the revshare program, we have a specific player created by our parent company, that is the only way to earn money in the program.
