Is style/steeze a cover up for less talent

I like stylish riders as much as the next person, but i start to wonder about people like Dash Longe. Sure he's got some nice style but hell, there are a bunch of other pros with better style and tricks. So are people like him using style to cover up their lack of big tricks.

It's not only him either, the Phils while great don't really have the big tricks to roll out. Instead they just throw in nice grabs.

More people need to be like Tanner, CR Johnson, Turpin, and those fools with the combined big tricks and style

you're retarted. dash and the phils are fucking wicked good. There's more to being pro than huge spins and inverts. Watch how big those guys go. Look at that shot in axis of dash on that like 110+ foot gap jump a month or 2 ago. That's fucking pro. Watch exact science, or hell, stereotype. Those guys are all around good skiers. The 540 you may do in your park, and the 540 (or unnat 540) dash does off some monster backcountry jump are totally different.

 
OH my god. No! Dash longe fuckig killlllllllllls it. Its so hard to make everything as smooth and stylish as he does it. In the air he coes off and lands like nothing and sets his spins a little off axis and with this original grab, his tsyle is very different and sick. I love it. On rails he is a fucking beast. SOOOO much syle its rediculous, the wya he comes on and off rails makes me peupty-peupty pants-s. Not ot mention his big urban ra ils

what you see of the phils in videos are not even close to what they can actually do trust me. for dash though personnaly i dont think hes all that good and im not the only one and ive heard about him by PEOPLE and hes actually not that great

The Phils weren't a good example, i see some of your guys points but lots of people have the style of Dash and sping bigger, personally i don't think his 540's are even that nice.

um, dash's style is original, and alot of peopel like it. No one really does anythign like he does. His main asset are his rails htough, no one is as smoth on rails as him.

i'd much rather see some steezed out simplicity then some super haggard huge trick

but people who can combine steeze with big tricks are the peopple who i reespect the most, like mickael and tanner and guys like that, i mean mickael does the switch 10 and just grabs the whole way through it with like no movement, that's skill right there

and another good example is corey vanular, watch his pipe run from vt open, his cork 10, possibly one the the steeziest things i've ever seen

the phils are badass, at least larose and belanger so i don't think this applies to them at all, but dash is definatly not, i've seen almost every pro do sevens switch, natural, unatural better than him, for him i think style is definatly a front for him

 
The way I see it, having style is having talent. If you're flaily in the air and can't land perfect you don't have much style, which is a lack of control, and if you don't have control you're not fully capable of doing the trick perfect, that's my look at it. Take for example some guy that'll just huck and do anything,7s, 10s, 12s, double backs, compared to a guy that can consistently do a smooth 360 with no flailing and a perfect landing off any jump. I think the guy doing the 3's is better.

I think focus on style really points out the people with no talent, because thier tricks look uglier. Why do a trick if it looks ugly?

 
if you can do a super sick 5 with style, why not go a little bigger and step it up to a 7? is it cuz your scared? or cuz you cant do it?

I think this is a fantastic thread..... i've thought this lots of times... but in the end of it, i dont think it matters... when you look at snowboarding now, people like benedek and jp walker are getting all the attention, guys who do stuff like huge off axis 10s, in the BC, with style.... anything over 10 isnt done.... it COULD be done... but lets face the facts, it wont look good..... technicality and style is where the props will come from... focus on them both and your sure to get respect

Doing something with style is talent.

As has been a zillion times on here, a smooth and styled 1 or 3 is so much better than a pencilled hucked 7 or 9

I also think what dash is doing is pretty sick, because hes brining something different to the sport. I would get really tiresome if noone was spinning over 540, but watching Dash's segment in a ski movie is because its different from everyone else.

 
people like dash serve a really good purpose in the pro ski industry. Nothing balances out the sport, and movies, then different styles. Its nice to see smooth stylish tricks thrown both natural and unnatural with no apparent difference in style.

i DO see kids in the park with the Tanner Hall gorilla steeze, but the problem is, they cant do anything. They go super low into a rail and dont make it halfway, they try to throw super slow threes, only to completely flail out. Then they make fun of another kid who completely greases the rail to 270 out because he was 'too high'

so pro's individual style is a really good thing, but some kids take it to the point where they try to have good STYLE before they can even perform tricks

Style is talent, if someone has amazing style they are a talented skiier, and who says you have to throw big tricks to be talented, talent isnt just throwing big tricks its being consitant and being smooth, big tricks have nothing on a switch unattural cork 5 with style.....

style is fukn tough. thats what makes a skier, anyone can huck their body a certain way if they have the balls, but to have style is to have control on your trick. once you learn a trick, you gotta work hard to get good style into it, and thats where the talent is. its all about control.

I think style is something you're born with, if you dont have it, you dont have it. sure you can clean up your style to a certain extent, but still. I think its dumb how alot of people think the word style is a synonym for 'gorilla steeze'. Style is more than looking like a chimp when you ski. In my opinion Its smooth movement and most of all being in control.

 
it is def a cover up. I use it all the time cause i suck. I say i do the styliest 180s but the best i can do is a 3

i for one would rather see a huge 1260 rather than a stylie 540. I mean come on, 1260s are nuts. A 540 is still a 540, no matter how stylie it is

I think ewok said it best. I really cant ski, but if I look steezy dropping to the park I will at least get some respect. I really only hit rails and boxes, and I am pretty good, but Im too pussy to try a three. It is my first year skiing, but becasue I have steeze people think Im good. Its cool though cuz to do anything with style means you can do that shit in your sleep. Style usually doesnt come natural, you have to constantly think about where your arms are, how your skis are angled, the look on your face, body position, even how you carve. Chastise me if you want, but all of the top pros are always aware of these things when they are filming, and it takes mental as well as physical ability, because the have to be super focused to have super style.
