Is smoking really bad?

I always thought that tobacco probably shortened your life by several years but I just found out that the oldest person ever was a life time smoker. Jeanne Calment smoked from 1896 until she was around 117 because she could not light the cigarette and did not like asking others to light it for her. She lived to be 122. I also remember hearing that before the Europeans got to america the Cherokee smoked tobacco all the time and often lived to be 100ish. Is smoking not bad or were these people just flukes?

smoking definetly isn't a healthy habit to get into, but i will say that smoking cigs back in the day before all the government regulations came about was definetly much healthier than todays times. Today the government pumps so much other crap into the cigs that are so terrible for you, an the only reason they are their is to get the user hooked. So smokings never was healthy but its a lot worse for you now.

Yeah, but back then there weren't 500+ additives to cigarettes. It was all natural tobacco. These days, you're smoking a lot more than just tobacco.

i smoke weed, gratuitously. and although i do smoke cigarettes from time to time i think they are 10 or 20 times as bad for you as smoking the greenery.

and you havta remember, when you light up a cigarette, youre not just smoking tobacco, youre smoking tobacco and about 4000 different additives and chemicals put into them to make them more addictive to make the smoker buy another pack.

today's cigs are a lot worse than they were back when your great-grandaddy smoked em. i know it's illegal in the U.S., but if you get your hands on some high-quality cubans, that's your best bet. also, italian cigars are really good and they don't have all of that tar and shit that you get in a cigarette. i don't smoke, but i have smoked a couple of cubans and italians in the past and it didn't affect my health in any way.

Are you seriously asking this question? Of course! There is fucking Tar in those things, among a gazillion other chemicals.

Why ask when you can see for yourself. Head down to your local hospital and check out the folks dying of C.O.P.D.

almost every post in this thread is totally ridiculous, but I can only quote one.

so smoking italian cigars is somehow healthy? get your head checked.

the chemicals they put in cigarettes are not to make them more addictive, its so that they burn quickly and evenly. and no, the government doesn't put them in there to whatever nutcase said that.

TOBACCO INCREASES YOUR RISK FOR CANCER. end of story. whether it be a cigar or a cigarette. but unlike cigars, cigarettes put tar in your lungs. smoking weed puts a lot more tar in your lungs. this site is filled with people who think that cigarettes are the devil but weed is ok...wrong. weed has a shitload more tar, but not carcinogens. tar makes it harder to breathe, but there's plenty of daily joint smokers who can run really fast. sitting on your ass and doing nothing makes it harder to breathe when you are doing aerobic exercise too, but plenty of people do that.

tobacco in moderation is fine. hell, you're young, smoke all you want. your risk for cancer is so low right now it wouldn't make a difference. however, prolonged use increases your risk for cancer. but if you quit, the extra risk fades over time. people who never smoke get cancer. my advice is, don't smoke because its bad for you, but if you want to occassionally, it really doesn't matter as long as you're not running a lot for sports.

just don't get addicted.

sorry guy, i didn't say it was healthy, i just said it wasn't as harmful as a cigarette because it didn't have all of that other shit in it, y'know, rat poison and shit.

I figured the tar and stuff was really bad for you. What about just straight tobacco? Like if you grew it on your own and smoked it out a pipe or something?

possibility of mouth or throat cancer (because you don't inhale) but other then that relatively safe. We're humans that need oxygen, inhaling smoke 200 times a day is going to be detrimental, especially like everyone was saying with how many chemicals are in cigs. My ex gf rocks a pack of menthols a day, its gross and I doubt she makes it past 35

I don't think smoking tobacco is all that bad either. Obviously it shortens your life span a bit but I think it's all of the additives that are put into cigarettes that make it bad. I quit smoking finally and if I do happen to by a pack I only smoke American Spirits now because its just tobacco. No additives.

thats like saying smoking weed and driving is really dangerous, but the fact that smoking weed has never been determined the primary cause of a car accident unlike alcohol or other drugs, is just a coincidence. its not a coincidence. the fact that she was smoking mostly straight tobacco, unlike all the additives (whether they be to addict someone, or to burn a certain way), is the reason why it didnt affect her so much. now you wont get away with that because of the additives, not the tobacco.

i dont smoke cigs and never will because my dad quit the day before my first birthday for my health, and later my brothers, but i dont necessarily have a problem being around or being friends with people that do, aslong as its not constant.

every one says smoking is bad, but my 96 year old great grandma has smoked 2 packs a day since she was 20. She has absolutely no health problems and goes for 3 mile walks every day, while she smokes. Ether way i don't smoke cigs, weeds good enough.

ah ok. when you started off saying smoking is really bad for your health, then said it was a random coincidence, i thought you meant altogether it was bad. but you said random coincidence as if it meant nothing. my apologies, i read it wrong.

most people believe that smoking is alot worse then it actually is. the government is almost forced to put out commercials and ads to prevent it cause so man people are against it. before cigarettes were taken over by big companies and they mixed their produce with like chemicals and shit, cigarettes really werent that bad for you. i mean ya its obviously might have a small toll on your lungs but people overestimated how harmful it can be.

dude, you get more tar, cause you hold your hits in. And i have heard of growers spraying their plant to make it way just a bit more.

Hasn't stopped me though. What is life without risks?

My maternal Grandmother died from smoking a few years ago, her lungs pretty much gave up. She donated her body to science and they scoped her throat and lungs and it was nothing but black. She actually stopped smoking too. Watching her die like a fish out of water absolutely destroyed me.

My paternal Grandfather died from smoking a few years ago as well.

My maternal Grandfather died of lung cancer a long time before I was born.

My paternal Grandmother died because she had serious SMOKING-RELATED HEART DISEASE that required a surgury. Her weakened arteries, from smoking, were too brittle to hold after they were operated on, causing her to die before I was born.

All of my grandparents died way before their time because of smoking. To all of you with grandparents that smoke, get ready for the possibility of watching them suffocate in open air.

What discusts me is the fuckheads that get a tracheotomy (fucked that one up), or the famous "hole in the throat", and have the fucking nerve to smoke through it. I cant stand those people that manage to survive serious diseases that were blatantly derived from smoking, and continue to smoke.

I really love the one story of a woman who "smoked til the day she died". Yeah!, died of brain cancer that spread from her lung cancer that came from smoking.

cigs to pot these days is like rockstar to pepsi... theyll both rot your teeth but one will rot your teeth and all your organs too

You know there are always those once in a million stories, like millionaires who never went to college. Like people said, its bad for you, no way around it. I had to give up my love of cigars to get healthy for colorado :(

its unique genetics in the case of the centenarians.

if it was not for cigarettes and obesity (not taking into account family history), all the cardiac ICUs and telemetry units would shut down.

you know how much of our healthcare load is based on smoking?

spirits take to long to smoke. especially when cold. just chew on mad gum, thats how beat the habbit. sad thing is i have to quit dipping now.

that is blatntly wrong

smoking weed does the shit it does because it SLOWS DOWN YOUR BRAIN, meaning Lg that your reaction speed is lowered...

lower reaction speed = higher risk of a crash

weed is worse than cigs, but people usually dont smoke it nearly as often so it isnt as bad

and to you

yea

some people dont get affected.. its true, it is not like automatic death, but it INCREASES YOUR CHANCE...meaning its not guarenteed but she would be alot more likely to get cancer, your grandma was just lucky as fuck, dont assume you will be too

Smoking has nothing to do with age.

Your age is determined by genetics and how long the tails are on your dna. But there are plenty of other things that can kill you.

So maybe the lady lived to 117, all it is saying is that smoking didn't kill her.

My great grandmother lived to 92, but my grandmother lived to 54. My dad is 50, my aunt is 54. Both of them are totally healthy. Great grandma didn't smoke, grandmother smoked a lot. Dad and aunt dont smoke. My grandmother died of emphysema which is often caused by smoking. Therefor, it is likely that smoking killed my grandmother.

Smoking causes problems which can kill people. Doesnt kill everyone though. Sometimes your genes kill you first.

some people smoke all their lives and dont get any problems,

some others make smoke rarely and can have health problems
