Is skiing killing snowboarding?

Found a really go article way back on freeskier website, wonder if anyone can redirect me for my project.
Thought on this subject?
Did snowboarding give rise to skiing and is skiing taking over now due the diversity of having two planks rather than one?

Iv'e noticed it also,7 years ago i was the only skier in my the park, now its 50/50, skiers/ snowboarders

It think it goes along the line of skiing progressing faster than snowboarding, but neither are going to be obsolete or dominant in the near future.

naw, i just think skiing is starting to catch up to popularity that snowbaording has had in the last 10 years.

no.the only reason you are skiing way more skiers in the park now than 10 years ago is because there were way less freeskiers 10 years ago because the sport was still in the primary stages of development and also because skiers weren't allowed/got shunned for going in the park back in the day.

skiing is a way bigger industry than snowboarding, but snowboarding is a way bigger industry than freeskiing, and will be for a long time.

For friends that take it seriously skiing and snowboarding seem to have pretty equal numbers. But snowboarding still wins out in the people who go a couple times a season.

well if you go anywhere here in the midwest, there is 98% snowboarders and 2% skiers, on a good day. most of the time I am the only skier in the park, and then there are moms and dads with their 2 year old skiing

At my local in NZ, there are definitely more skiers in the park. Snowpark etc however are now pretty even, with skiers having caught up in the last 5 years

Skiing has basically caught up in numbers in summit county and is continuing to grow. I would expect the numbers to be fairly close to 50/50 in the future.

I doubt that free skiing will ever kill snowboarding though. There is definitely the group of surfers that wants to recreate surfing by snowboarding powder and the group of skaters that want to take their skating to the snow and it is unlikely for these people to choose skiing over snowboarding.

ok with all of you people saying that parks arent still more snowboarder based, what about the actual park crews? Ive always found parks to generally favour snowboarders much more in the way theyre built. Id say this is definitely true in whist, the majority of the park crew here snowboards, and id still say that the majority of paying riders are also snowboarding.

In some places, I'd say it's not far off. At my home mountain in New Jersey, it's about 90% snowboarders. I skied a day up in Connecticut last year and was surprised to see at least as many skiers as snowboarders if not more. It definitely depends on the place

I think thats slightly ridiculous.

Tough one this. Over here in the UK park nights are dominated in numbers by boarders, yet, in terms of standard skiers own it in terms of ratios. I.e yo might have 30 boarders and 5 tops throwin down. Yet 10/15 skiers.and the same number proper killin it

I can understand preferring skiing but how in the world can a freeskier not enjoy the occasional snowboard edit? It's almost the same exact thing.

I absolutely love watching snowboard urban, and some backcountry shots. Park not so much, because I can't appreciate some of the rail tricks as much as I should because I simply don't know the difficulty of them.

Snowboarding was a fad that is only still popular with people who don't live near a mountain. And by mountain, I mean a real mountain.

ha this, and most snowboarders here are just trying to look cool and tell people they snowboard, don't know why people think it's still cooler, it's not 2006 anymore

Okay they do come up with some creative stuff, but it just doesn't do it for me. The rails are boring unless they take one foot out, and jumps just look like simplified ski jumps because they can't cross or grab in as many ways. And big mountain? C'mon.

It's not like they're bad edits, I just prefer skiing and am rarely wowed by a snowboard edit

I see many skiers getting into the park, more than snowboarders. But which skiers are we talking about ? Sorry to say, but out of a 100 skiers going in the park, I guess you can say that there 15 or 20 freeskiers. That's how it is at my mountain. You have more skiers since skiing is easy and accessible, snowboarding requieres a bit more technique just to be able to shred out the mountain.

Yeah. snowboarding became really popular about 5 or so years ago. Now skiing is making a comeback. I am a skier and i do miss snowboarding even though i never have. Skiing looks a lot better in park and freestyle but snowboarding looks amazing in the backcountry! I have seen sunny, we, the eighty six, after dark, trip for the road, and so much more but The Art of Flight still remains the best on my list

Its just easier to pick up skiing and stick with it, snowboarding is difficult to learn and as well all know Americans have became lazy about learning new things. Most winter folk learn to ski and say they want to start snowboarding but just end up keeping two boards under their feet.

I completely agree. I will say that snowboarding jumps look really boring to me. The occasional super smooth 5 can look good, but for the most part their rotations and grabs have little variation compared to skiing.

I feel like skiers take it a lot more seriously than snowboarders, where snowboarders just go to have fun and goof off where freeskiers have more of a passion and care more about progressing and looking good.

As it was once said, newschool is a state of mind, not a style of skiing.

Of course, I'm just talking from my experiences, and of course I'm making generalizations as there are plenty of exceptions.

I'm had a hard time wording that right, and that was the best I could come up with. I hope at least someone catches what I'm throwin'.

it was skiers who started the helmet over the goggle thing. look how popular that is now.

two plankers FTW

At my hill there are more skiers that are good a park than snowboarders but I'd say its a 60/40 mix for skiers

I'm not going to deny that snowboarding has contributed a lot to skiing in almost every aspect of the sport, but to say skiing wasn't cool before snowboarders showed up on the hill is simply false.

Yeah, skiing progressed faster because it started out as more obsolete, but I think that the two sports have equaled out more or less now in terms of progression.
