Is pvc bad?

This thread is an lol fest. I love the suggestion for green, biodegradable rails.

Seriously, a plumber told me that the black pvc is light duty and not supposed to be buried. The white pvc is more durable, can be buried and is better for rails. Not racially motivated.

Traditionally, ABS is not pressure rated, but who fucking cares if you are using it for a rail and not run pipes in your house.

i just thought it was a funny stat lol, i know how much houses cost and my dad has a hardwood flooring company. but yeah a million isnt too much anymore for a house.

Guess I won't be using that guy the next time I have a plumbing issue. Thanks for clearing it up. I'll stick to carpentry.

pvc is awesome.... Quickest and cheapest material to make rails out of.

bad for the environment? So is the petroleum that PVC is made out of. You damn hippies...... Next thing you'll be saying is "down with oil, I don't use it! I ride the bus instead". morons....

steel really isn't that expensive either.

You can go to home depot, Pick up a couple maybe more 10 foot pipes.

If you don't know how to well or don't have any more money for more steel, Build the frame out of wood.

2x4s are dirt cheap, support the shit out of it. drill holes through the pipie(works best if you drill through with a small bit first.

Screw it down tight, maybe put a little ply on the sides for extra support against wobble if you didnt screw it down the best.

Nothing like the solid feel of a nice steel rail. Maybe just my opinion but i think it's worth the extra buck.

I call bullshit on many fronts here.

There is black PVC...there's even clear PVC! Schedule 80....look it up. Sched. 40 is normally gray, but also comes in different colours if you pay a premium. Both should do. Wall thickness (pressure rating) is the only difference as someone said. Variants of PVC don't matter, incl. CPVC (chemical resistant...better for UV too).

ABS is a piece of shit and a softer version of PVC...not as good for rails.

Check out HDPE if you want something harder than PVC....it's more expensive too though.

I've never hit a PVC rail, but would imagine that any plastic sucks nutz.

Can you tell what kind of PVC pipe this is?
