Is pvc bad?

im trying to convince my friend that pvc pipe is what everyone uses for rails and it works fine. He went outside and slid his ski over a piece of pvc pipe and said it dug into it and shit. I know that not right because pvc is the main rail surface but what might be causing it to do this for him? MASSIVE PLUS K!
 
well this is helpfull haha im assuming its his edges. Is there a good way to keep this from happening besides dulling your edges... wax?

 
pvc is plastic nonetheless so its possible for your ski to dig in. chances are that the reasons behind it are either super sharp skis, real cheap pvc or when he gets on, his ski is at a weird angle so the edge slices the pvc instead of the base sliding on it. pvc is still the best though so no worries
 
i've actually had really good luck with my pvc rails that i've built. they do get cut up a tiny bit on my rail but nothing major. and replacing a pvc rail is much easier to do than any other rail set ups that i can think of. unless you can weld, pvc is your best bet haha. and yeah, his edges were probably sharp
 
the edges are probably still sharp, but you just gotta make sure to not dig the front edge into the PVC, you gotta kinda tilt it up a bit so it doesn't dig in.
So many people use PVC, and once it gets shaved down a bit it's not a problem at all.
 
Grab a gummy stone and just dull the edge underfoot, wont influence how your skis initiate turns and you'll slide real nice nice

 
The only downside to PVC, that after heavy abuse, it cracks and falls apart.

My argument for PVC is that its cheap, easily found at stores, and easy to work with.

Perhaps, he was using a different kind of PVC. I use 1.25" schedule 40, and 3" schedule 40, (schedule being the measure of thickness or something of that sort) and never had problems with catching. Its almost too slick.

on topic: sometimes i catch an edge on my pvc, so detune skis and when your pvc gets cut up, just go over it with rough sand paper or a rough file, you'll slide much better on pvc than on metal...
 
pvc rails are slick as shit. the only problem is they break a lot. Go get yourself metal and weld a nice steel rail.
 
I think pvc sucks, but you can still slide it alright if you edges are dull enough. It slides different than metal, i dont really like the feel, and if you shave in just kill yourself cause thats not fun.

Steel rails. Consistent solid feel. But pvc is alright if you have nothing else. Cheap and easy to build
 
that was a really douchey thing to say. hes trying to proove to his friend that pvc is a good make-shift rail. im pretty sure hes not having problems hitting it.
 
tell him to lean on his back foot as much as possible to avoid catching an edge. and tell him to tape it
 
what do you by that? because ive found that the softer types of pvc get mangled more but they have less of a chance of shattering.
 
yea i've heard this too, i have no idea why, but i've definitely heard that

on another note about shattering and cutting up pvc, am i the only one who's never had a piece of pvc crack or shatter? i've been using both my rails for a good 2-3 years summer and winter, and haven't had the slightest problem with a crack or break
