Is mainstream getting better?

I'm usually your typical "oh em gee fuk t3h radio" kinda guy but I'm liking a lot of the new wave of mainstream. Some examples....

haha not even gonna lie, i heard bulletproof like a week or so ago at the gym and i thought it was a pretty dope song. airplanes by b.o.b and fame are both good, but the problem with the radio is that they get over played..but forever fuck lady gaga and her stupid ass songs

There might be a strain of decent artists and songs, but the rest of it is still here, thriving

FUUUUU. Look at how hood weezy is!

Bulletproof is actually a pretty good song. I like it. The B.o.B. one didn't sound that bad and the Mike Posner one is ehhh. Those three are better than much of the mainstream that's out now.

All pretty sick songs. Airplanes by B.O.B is so dope but there are better songs by Mike Posner IMO and bulletproof is dope but the dubstep version is way sicker.

Exactly. If you are a good, unique artist you will probably be rewarded for it eventually.

It's a good day when artists you've known for years make it big. If you haven't been on Mike Posner or B.o.B for at least 2 years you're slackin.

Well on that first video, no. Hypercrush is murdering the underground of 8-bit/synth music by going mainstream with their overly simple techno beats and shallow (I'm a cool guy who likes attractive women) lyrics.

is la roux mainstream?

in that case, there are a bunch of bands that I would call good and mainstream.

Black Keys anyone?

Wait the fuck up.

I've never heard of Calvin Harris, but I searched him, and you ranked him the same as Rusko?

You've heard Rusko on the radio? Not BBC radio. On the actual radio? I wouldn't call any sort of dubstep mainstream.

rusko has gotten played on west coast radio. and yes. I was a fan of Calvin Harris way before I was Rusko and I hold him high.

and yes. I listen to Radio 1 a lot

an on that note Rusko will be producing part if not all of Britney's new album. so expect dubstep to be all over your radio

yeah they are all dope songs, for now. until the radio plays the shit out of them like they do with EVERY good song they play.

Mainstream music still has that poppy and cliche type feel to it, but recently it's been moving more towards house and club music so i'm glad its progressing a bit

mainstream pop is a talentless pool of teenagers trying to be rockstars.

mainstream in other areas is actually really great, pop is just going in a bad direction. pavarotti was mainstream opera and he was incredible

I was going to listen to them and then give you an informed opinion, but I pressed play on the first video, heard the first 5 seconds, and was too embarrassed to even play it (there are a couple people over at my house) sounded like awful synth pop. So yeah that first song is for sure as bas a soulja boy, I'm not even gonna listen to the other ones.

Ok so that second song was actually pretty decent it didn't make me want to gouge out my eyeballs with a spoon at all. The other ones......oh my god. The last one was bad enough but that first one was actually unlistenable I had to turn it off after 45 seconds.

my thoughts exactly. i still cant listen to the radio for extended periods of time, but i think pop music has improved lately.

I heard hathbanger on the radio last summer so I'm gonna go with yes. Although that was the only time I've listened to the radio in about 6 years. Now I listen to NPR or Jazz if I HAVE to put something on.

this. there are good songs that come up every once in a while, and then the radio stations play them twice every hour for 5 months and you end up hating the song more than anything else in the world

It's so sad that you aren't more open minded. I used to think I was cool for hating on mainstream music just like you. Then I wised up a few years ago and decided to not be uptight.

Let me list off a few good mainstream listens I've heard the past few months. I won't include Distant Relatives since you've got that covered.

Drake - Thank me later

Ratatat - LP4

Horse the Band - Infinite Arms

Janelle Monae - The Archandroid

Minus the Bear - Omni

High Violet - The National

B.o.B - Adventures of Bobby Ray

Erykah Badu - New Amerykah Pt. 2

I won't bother listing the countless other mixtapes and singles I've heard that I have enjoyed. And I won't put MGMT's new album because that's just too much controversy to bring up. But seriously man, all the albums up there were really enjoyable listens. You can't expect every album you pick up to be a 2 year project between two of the biggest names in their respective genre. You wouldn't turn down a blowie from a 7 just because there's a 10 at the party would you?

^its pretty popular. most know of la roux, and where i live they play bulletproof on the radio pretty often.
