Is Lutsen worth the drive?

I know their park is crap, but what is the overall experience like?

-Tree skiing

-Lifts

-Best time of the year to ski there

-Run variety

-Prices

Is it worth the drive from the Stevens Point/Wausau area?

idk how long your drive is, but it was well worth the six hours or whatever from Rochester, MN. Just make sure you plan on staying for two to three days. The runs are awesome and you could rip one part of the hill for a whole day w/o really getting bored.

It's great right after a storm. I've never been after a storm but I really want to. Tree runs are sketchy as hell if there hasn't been any recent snow. Prices are high but well worth it. The caribou express is the shit. It's faster than most lifts out west. You can lap a ton of terrain from it too. Don't go on the runs off the backside of moose mountain unless conditions are perfect, it can actually be deadly.

If you want trees and pow go to bohemia. Lutsen is great but it can get overrun with gaper families. Their park is literally the most deadly run on the hill. If you hit a jump one of two things can happen: 1- the landing is so flat that your knees get destroyed. 2 there is no landing, the jump is just a ramp to flat. The rails are sticky and the park is poorly maintained. It used to be sick but now it's terminally ill.

All that advice is from annual trips in March. I've skied it in slush, ice, 30mph winds, -20 degrees to 50 degrees. The most fun thing at lutsen is just cruising the groomers at highway speeds and boosting side hits, rollers, and drop offs. Just make sure you don't fly into a kid. There's a side hit on the left side of the split rock chute that you can send really big, it's right under the chair too so you can put on a show. Experts cutoff on eagle is a great run, avoid the bridge chair around 2-4pm at all costs. Don't go to the top of mystery mountain unless you like skating and a long chair ride, get off midway and hit the boarder cross course (IT IS SO FUN). Moose access works to get over to moose, don't dare try moose return unless you can carve like an Olympic GS skier, there's a sharp turn and you have to hit it around 30-40 to have enough speed to get back. Moose mountain is the most fun though, the chalet on moose is expensive but the view on the deck is well worth the price you pay for food.

Thanks man, I appreciate it. Can't wait to road-trip it up there and try something new. The owner did a hell of a job with Granite Peak so It will be interesting to see what Lutsen is like.

John said everything. Lutsen the best in the midwest imo (I have not been to bohemia yet however). The high speed lift on Moose is the bees knees. Have fun when you go! I'm going to get up there mid March hopefully.

the guy who plans the trip threw out his back, trip post-poned to the exact weekend you speak of! given that it can still get pulled together.

Sweet! Except for the guy. I'm going to have to get the ball rollin on this, however there is a chance that I'll be in Montana instead. We'll see what happens.

Theres a park under caribou express, which is awesome. Also there's a couple decent rails! The handrail at the top is really fun, super slick, there's a lofty canon rail right under the chair but it's really short, you get a lot of cheers from the chair. A barrel stall/jump that I was able to hit going uphill by carving hard from another run. Also a see saw box! Jumps on that park are hilarious, there's a decent one by the lower bridge run. Landing matches takeoff well but there isn't much hangtime. Freefall is super steep but fun with good snow. There's a big drop on to upper hari Kari on the right side right at the top. You can SEND it.

That sounds like a ton of fun! I'm super stoked for tomorrow but not looking forward to have to get up at 3:30 am. It's worth it though.
