Is it wrong to binge drink?

I am a 3rd year university student who loves to party. the only time i ever drink is on weekends when i make it my mission to get absolutely trashed and have a rippin' good time. i NEVER casually drink, and I am in fact quite opposed to the idea of "casual drinking". My parents both are casual drinkers and will have a few glasses of wine or a few beers a night, but I fail to see the purpose of this. I have never had the desire to have a "casual" drink after class. I know many that do but i could never quire wrap my head around the idea of "casual" drinking. there are times when i will have a drink because of social circumstances, for example at christmas or thanksgiving when my father opens up a nice bottle of champagne or wine, otherwise i fail to see the purpose of having a few drinks unless you plan on getting absolutely obliterated....

so therein lies the question.... is this wrong? Am I a bad person looking down upon "casual" drinking, while wholeheartedly embracing the beautiful act of binge drinking?

No not at all. jus be carefull. I am pretty much the same way. the purpose of alcohol is to get drunk and anyone who says differently is wrong. if you are going to drink you might as well do it right.

my dad loves drinking red wine with dinner. I don't see alcohol as purely a way to get drunk, red wine for example has various health benefits. I can also understand when my dad gets home from work and likes to down a couple of beers. Its not to get drunk but rather just to help him get to sleep, nothing wrong with that. Or having a beer with a steak.

However, when it comes to hard liquor, I see no purpose at all to drinking it unless the goal is to get drunk.

if im going to party i like to get fucked up, but i also casually drink sometimes after work, or just chillin with a couple friends i just really enjoy drinking my favorite types of beer whether im getting really drunk or just having a few.

alls i know is im a man who likes to git rip roarin drunk at least 3 nights a week.

if that wrong, well then shit, i guess america's wrong too. COMMUNIST!

I feel like you reach a point, if you drink alot, where you enjoy it. Honestly, after a stressful day or a long day of skiing, there is nothing like a cold beer. It's like a conditioning, when you drink alot of beer, you're drunk, happy, whatever. You drink one or two, you get similar feelings but without getting hammered and its relaxing and refreshing. Now thats borerline alcoholizim, but thats the only way i can explain casual drinking. Ever think you parents or other casual drinkers just enjoy the taste of such liquors and spirits? I sure enjoy the taste of beer and whiskey/rum and coke.

so you are trying to say that this theory of "casual drinking" is for the purpose of enjoyment....

let me see if i understand this concept correctly by applying it to a different action....

MURDER:

binge murdering would be the equivalent of a rage-filled, mindless killing spree, while casual murdering would be murdering for enjoyment, correct?

SEX:

binge sex would be the equivalent of having a wild day of non-stop sex which would likely result in some brutal chaffing, while casual sex would be what the majority of us enjoy

how would one apply these word definitions to the action of SKIING? binge skiing would be like skiing non-stop for several days, which i assume all of us would enjoy greatly, while casual skiing would be skiing for enjoyment.... a paradox arises!

(I'm taking some analytical philosophy classes at university if you hadn't noticed)

not to to say you are young or what not, but you will grow up and see drinking as a casual thing. I am not saying I dont go out still and get hammered, but I do enjoy a couple of drinks after work or when I go out for dinner...

see i like beer all different kinds of beer so i enjoy sitting down and just having a nice drink, but i like to get fucked up as well., but i usually drink shitty beer when i get wasted, and good beer if i am just chillen......i just cant bring myself to like wine though maybe someday

I think we're on the same page. I don't drink often but when I do I get real drunk. I mean real drunk. Usually once every one or two months is good for me. As long as you don't drive or drink so much you die then your set.

understood, but when you're craving a delicious beer, are you craving the glorious mix of hops and barley? or are you craving the state-of-mind altering effects...?

do people who casually drink for enjoyment enjoy the taste? or the buzz experienced from a few casual drinks?

so when you put the poison in your body you dont see the point of putting just a little bit you think you should put a lot in or nothing?

i haven't drank in 4 months and i go on leave tomorrow for 2 weeks HELL FUCKING YEAH you better believe i'll be binge drininking

i think its a mix. they like the little buzz that comes with a couple of drinks as well as the taste; however they usually like the taste because of its subconscious association with fun.

i honestly feel like i kill more brain cells drinking than i do toking. between the two, there aint gonna be much left upstairs....

but what can you do?

I'm kind of the same way. Although, my problem isn't that I don't see the point in casual drinking, my problem is that I try to drink casually and then I just want more and more and more until I'm wasted.

Like Friday, my bf and I were just going to stay in, and have a couple of beers while drinking the presidential debate. We bought and 24 pack, but all we planned on doing was having a couple, watching a movie, and going to bed.

Sure enough we were out of beer by 1am, on the back porch smoking cigarettes and debating over the existance of God.

Or, sometimes we'll meet after work, at like 5:00 to have a beer and shoot a game of pool. Usually this turns into 6 beers a piece, several mixed drinks, a couple of shots, and a cab home at 2am.

It's not that I necessarily WANT to get obliterated, it's that once I start, I don't stop.

There are times though when my boyfriend has been like "want a beer?" and I've been like..."are we gonna get drunk? cause otherwise it's just a waste of calories" ...like if I don't have enough to get buzzed, I'd rather just drink a diet coke.

I just came off a summer were i drank 86 nights out of 91 nights. I havent had anything to drink since august 24th. And im starting to think about drinking, and its affects. I have realized that binge drinking is the only thing i will ever do, and that i hate the actual taste of it, but being drunk is worth it. Hopefully once im healthy again i can start drinking again.

yeah.

It's weird, because for me there's a "beer drinking mood", where I'll crave the taste of beer, and just really want an ice cold beer, because I'm thirsty for one and am craving the taste.

There's other times, where it doesn't even sound very good, and I'll drink to get buzzed.

sorry for post whoring, but there are definitely times when I just really want a gin and tonic, or a margarita. They're just so delicious. You may have been referring to hard liquor straight up though.

we are not here to debate whether alcoholic beverages are properly regulated, we are here to debate the social and moral implications regarding the action of binge drinking, kthxbai. Last time i checked the definition of binge drinking included a clause which specified that you must be udner the age of 21 for it to be considered binge drinking...

I'll be drinking tonight because there's a movie premiere

Tomorrow because we're having a VP debate party

Friday because it's Friday

Saturday because it's Saturday

and Sunday because the next day is Monday.

I try to only drink on special ocassions such as these.

Well, it's bad for you, and if you end up hurting others or creating bad situations for others then it's bad,

otherwise you are only hurting yourself so whatever.

having a beer or two with dinner, or just while you're relaxing, is very nice. i guess some people don't appreciate it, but i sure do.

oh yeah, and the seahawks are back from their bye. They're going to pwn the Giants *knocks on wood*...that's a reason to drink

fully agree, a quality beer with dinner our just sitting around on a hot summer day is great, put getting hammered is just as great

sorry to double post but I thought of something as I hit the submit button. During the week or even on weekends, I am not looking to get fucked up most of the time. Drinking become more casual when you are able to go to a bar, hang out with friends, look at girls or guys (as you all say no Homo)... When your out at bars you don't wait to be that guy even though sometimes it happens. Girls hate that shit.

In college I did my fair share of binging and still probably drink more then I should, it is cool man just becareful, you don't want to be the next statisic.

i wrote that in a rush before heading to class so there are a few mistakes..... binge drinking DOES NOT require that the drinker be under the age of 21, i'm 22 i think and i binge drink, i know adults who binge drink.... some ass tried to say that we were all immature under-21ers because we binge drink but the intention of this thread was not to dispute that issue....

to those of you who claim that you drink casually for the taste..... if the alcoholic properties of the said drink were taken away (for example, non-alcoholic beer), would you still enjoy that drink?

both. I'm also in my third year at college. There was a time when I would go out and get hammered all weekend. Now it's fun, but not what I'm after weekend. I can have equal amounts of fun going out with the guys and getting hammered or chillin and watchin a movie and enjoyin a couple beers with my girl. In one, it's fun to just get trashed and have a good time. The other, I enjoy the taste of the beer or whatever I'm drinking and I also like how it is a relaxant. I'm not really getting buzzed or anything, but you feel noticeably more relaxed.

Either one can be fun, just depends what you're feelin.

you definetly not wrong for thinking this, but i dont think that thers no point to being a casual drinker. Most people tend to have long days either at work or at school and they like to relax after whatever they do. i myself find that a beer is really nice after a long day and it makes me feel relaxed

on a side note.... I am going to experiment with this "casual drinking" tonight at the campus pub because there is a mixer for the Ski and Snowboard Club... I shall attend without having predrank... and my intentions at the bar are to drink casually... not drink to get drunk. we shall see how this turns out

Haha, I saw that too.

I think you are thinking about this way too much, and more so, why are you trying to find an answer? Just curious. Obviously most of this thread has agreed that casual drinking is something enjoyed for both the taste, and the effect.

I'm curious about you now. How do you choose your choice of beverage when you go on this binge drinking escapade? Do you choose something that tastes better, or something that's going to fuck you up faster?

And just so you know, binge drinking can be very dangerous. And you should first and foremost be concerned about the people around you, then about yourself. You really don't want to hurt anyone - and one day you could get to the point of over doing it, and the result could be deadly. Just sayin'.

I'm not so much trying to find an answer to this question than I am trying to spark discussion and gain insight on the topic. I am only one year away from real life so my binge drinking days are coming to an end.... i am curious about the transition from binge drinking to casual drinking and what affects/motivates this change.

myself? I am not a huge party animal like many may assume from my making this thread. I generally drink once or twice a week, usually less than the average university student. my drinks of choice include PBR (even tho i am canadian), grey goose, canadian club, etc... but once i get my buzz on all bets are off, i will drink anything alcoholic and enjoy it all equally. my mood does have an impact on my choice of alcohol tho. I find that if i have a had a good week i will lean more towards the higher-end better tasting drinks (import beers, grey goose, etc...), but if i've had a rough week or I'm just in an ornery mood i tend to reach for the harsher drinks (max ice, jack daniels, etc....)

and thank you for the warning about binge drinking. I'm a big dude so i tend to be able to drink A LOT more than average people..... and i also have an aggressive personality.... in other words more often than not i find myself in some kind of confrontation on a good night of binge drinking. surprisingly tho, i am never angry in these confrontations, and if i do get in a fight it is for personal pleasure (yes i like to get rowdy). i usually have a smile on my face when things get rough. these confrontations usually stem from people "killing my buzz", i hate people who try to impede on my good times being had, whether it be a bouncer kicking me out for being too drunk or a random abercrombie bro just chillin out lookin gay.... generally when i am angry when i'm drunk i try to isolate myself from people because i know things could get ugly easily.....

while i dont think that you can compare binge drinking and binge murdering/sex, i do think its ok to drink to get fucked up as long as your not blacking out and stuff like that.

yea i love binge drinking its awsome but only once and a while not like all the time cuase half the time you dont remember anythign and just look like an idiot
