Is it worth it?

Alright so i go to a diner just about every weekend with my dad, and 94% of the time this old man is there, and over a year or two we have been talking and he is a real nice guy. So just a few days ago my dad and i go to the diner, and he is htere. so he comes over and we start talking cars, and i tell him a big carguy and looking for my first car. He asks me what im looking for and i tell him im looking for a nice VW. He said he has in his yard a bunch of cars and one that i may be interested in. so i ask and he said it was a 1971 VW camper bus. he was telling me how he wants someone to fix it up, then asked if i was interested on working on it. i told him yes that sounds like fun. so he tells me to stop by with my dad later to check it out. He also said if i were to get it working, i would be able to bring it hime and it would be mine free of charge. we show up later in the day and this thing has been to hell and back. the paint job is a custom camo done with spraypaint. So after talking to the guy all it needs is a new battery and a few other things, not major. So what i was thinking was get it running (who cares what it looks like), and use it as a ski trip van. I would be using it all winter as a party bus heading up to the mountain, and for going on ski trips. But when summer comes around it would be parked in my yard, and i would be using another car for getting here and there. Also to add to this, i am joining the Air Force so once I'm out of highschool i will not need a car for 4 years. So it would be sitting in ym yard for 4 years not being used at all. So the question is, is it worth it to get the VW and use it for one winters worth, and spend most of my summer fixing it up. Or do i just say thanks but no thanks to the guy and leave it at his place to sit forever? But it would be a sick ski bus to pack everyone in and go for the weekend.

END RANT/

SPARKNOTES: do i get a free VW 1971 camper fix it up all summer just for a winters worth. then never use it again.

i wouldnt. my brother got a 140,000 car for 40,000 a few months ago, just to show how the recession is killing car sales, you should be able to get some good cars for hella cheap right now. i wouldnt bother with the vw but do what you want

if you like workin on cars and want to then do it. its not really a question to ask anyone. more of a personal opinion. but that woul dbe doepman

it would be a good summer project if you have nothing else to do or a lot of spare time at least. and you can always sell it or give it back to the dude as a gift.

sounds fun, but those vans are extremely unsafe, I wouldn't want to drive one in treacherous conditions. There is no buffer between the driver and an impact at the front of the car. Might as well take on the project, but consider not driving it around in the snow.

I would not want to drive it in the winter, or up hills.... or at all.

At best that thing has a 2.0L Flat 4. At worst a 1.6L Flat 4. Either way, that thing is completely gutless and incapable of sustaining highway speeds.

I would suggest fixing it up, getting a free car and then selling it to make a few bucks, but using it for what you want is a really bad idea.

My parents had a van just like that for the last 20ish years. They recently sold it, which I was pretty unhappy about. I say do it, those things are sick, just get some good snow tires if you plan to take it on winter trips.
