Is it worth it

After resently losing a friend to the tragedy of an avalanche and hearing about this recent one in revelstoke i have been seriously questioning my reasons for skiing. I used to do it because it was me and my friends having fun and now it isnt the same though we still try and get out there as often as we can just to rip. I have even decided to head to Australia for a year without skiing. I am wondering what your guys reasons for skiing are and if you all think it is worth the risk. If not avalanches for the east possible serious injuries in the parks??

i use to do it for others but now i just ride for myself... if something looks to skechy i don't ride it. i couldn't imagin what it would be like to lose friend like that... i to think it would fuck up my skiing tho i would be gun shy against what was ahead of me. i just pray that i never have to go through that

put it this way...if you had a friend who died in a car accident, would you stop driving?

Yeti - would a more apt example be: if you had a friend who died in a car from street racing, would it stop you from street racing?

I just wanted to distinguish the difference between adventure/thrill-seeking and, for lack of a better word, 'necessity'.

I have to agree with Warren....

well said! I have a friend who did lose someone to streetracing but he continues to race in his buddies name cause he knows his buddy wouldnt have wanted him to quit just casue he died... Hes just a little more aware of whats going on around him when he races..

I think Dean Cummings said it best in Ski movie 2 when he broke his leg in 2 places and 3 ribs, 'This is the kind of thing you spend your whole life trying to avoid, skiing is full of risks but its so worth it.'

yep, skier711 put it right...im assuming that when you are in the mountains you are happy, at least i know i am, so thats why i ski...its exhilerating, challenging, and fucking tons of fun, and you get to be in some of the most diverse environments in the world...mountains are alwasy changing, and after a good ski day in good conditions, you feel great about it. skiing is like not like football or basketball, where you play on the same court all the time and by the same rules...you make your rules for skiing, and the court is always changing, which is what makes it exciting. avalanches do exist, but its becoming knowledgeable and avoiding them that makes skiing exciting...at times its almost like you're cheating death. it blows when one of your friends gets injured or dies skiing, but this sport wasnt designed for the weak of heart...to sum it up, i ski becuase it's a way for me to challenge myself and get away from the real world at the same time.

last season i fucked myself up good and sat in a hospital bed for 8 days. couldnt ski the rest of from mid feb untill the start of this season. i wondered if it was worth it too when i was in the hospital. it didnt take long till all i wanted was to get back out.

One of my main reasons for skiing is the thrill of uncertainty. Not knowing what's going to happen. Think about whats so great about floating a 3 or hucking a zero spin over a 60 foot table. Anything cann happen and unfortionitly it does happen sometimes.

Last August my best friend died in a skateboarding accident. That hit me, and pretty much the rest of the town I live in very hard, but no it didn't make me stop skating. It did however cause me to start wearing a helmet when I ski or skate. Just made me realize, that shit can happen to the best of them. So be aware, and be careful.

IF you take the proper safety measures, you shouldnt find yourself in a sticky situation. such as--- i know i cannot do an invert, so i dont go out and try a rodeo off a jump. stick with what ya know

think about one more thing tho, those people died doing what they love...that will not happen to alot of us so lets remember them for who they were and what they loved to do and keep skiing in their memory, b/c thats probably what they wanted.

All in all, I think skiing's come to the point that it's become over-romanticized. Sure it's great to die doing something you love, but you'd think that the unfortunate would rather have lived and not skied. Maybe not though.

death sucks eh? i also lost a close friend in a car crash back in october. however, you cannot let such events dominate your life. to fear death tantamount to ignoring life. you have to accept your own mortality and try to enjoy your time on this earth. though we are risk takers by definition, you can reduce the risk as much as possible. stay within your abilities, be aware of your environment, wear proper equipement.

my friend carlos died because he did not wear a seat belt. aaron died because he did not wear a transceiver. though death is not totally preventable, the probability of it can be seriously reduced.

i ski because it's fun and exhilarating. kevin, i know you do too. after some soul searching i think you'll remember this. whether it's worth it or not is an answer that only you can determine.

after my encounter with death, i have a new appreciation of life. i try to lead my life in a way that i believe carlos would approve of. people truly do not appreciate the simple pleasures of life until they are gone. that goofy grin of carlos was priceless and i will miss it. life is precious, value it.

though i generally thought nothing of it in the past, i now wear my seat belt everytime.

I ski because I need to. Its a time for me to forget everything and have fun. Even thopugh I might have problems going on I still ski te relieve my stress. I am aware of the risks but thats all part of the game. Do it if you're up for it but don't go out and kill yourslef if you're not.

just be safe, dont be too stupid, i couldnt stop skiing if i tried, id eventually go crazy if i had too

Also, you talk about street racing, and driving. here is the best example. your friend dies biking, do you stop biking? no, because you know if your safe you wont die.... bikings not a necessetie either. but lots of people die doiong it, mostly because of careless things (ie biking in the middle of the road, listening to music while biking)

shane mcconkey said something about this in the front line. He said something like 'everytime time you drop into a line, you know there's a risk, but if you can't get past that then you shouldn't even be out there' Don't get mad at me if that quote if incorrect though.

I love skiing, I'd rather die skiing than say like some sort of freak accident. I'm not saying try to kill yourself skiing or that we have control of how we die, but we will eventually die someday and be missed. Stuff happens, and sometimes we don't want it to. If I die, I die. I do hear the snow in heaven is pretty nice, and it will be waiting for me when I get there someday for some reason.

Hey wiener. I was really sorry to hear about Aaron.. can't imagine how that must have been for you and everyone close to him.

Is it worth it? Sitting here on the computer, hell no it isn't. After I broke my back I told myself I was going to take it easy when I got back on the hill. Of course the first day I got back I was dropping cliffs and hitting tables like nothing ever happened. It's totally different once you're on the snow.

For me personally, I'm either skiing hard or I don't want to be skiing at all. I think most of us are the same. And unless you totally change your lifestlye you're not going to be able to quit skiing. This is the real question. Is a total lifestyle change worth it?

I agree ith big dan. Dan, then heim and aaron and all the major injuries I have seen makes me wonder. But hell id miss it....

ya skiing has risks and if you want to take them and ski you should keep skiinhg, but if you are freaked out by some of the risks then you should stop, ski for yourself and if you are too scared to do it then dont ski anymore, if you are too scared and you keep doing it because your friends or something other than that you should stop

That is the stupidest thing i have ever heard...that is in fact the biggest bunch of bullshit i have ever heard. Craig Kelly was the best of the best and look what happened, same with Alibone...you can't control everything, espceially in the BC, you are at the mountains whim. As for not trying inverts...fuck that shit...how does anyone get good? you cant just start skiing an already have inverts down...yo gotta put your balls on the line and do what you gotta do...

i've questioned why i ski as well. i haven't gone out in two weeks because of depression. I still don't know what i want to do.

You have to question what it means to you. If it's just something you do to have fun and hang out with friends and if the loss of your friend declines your skiing experience, then the risk is greater than the reward.

Just ask yourself what skiing means to you.

To me, it's a passion. Even if I lost my leg I would be out there.

Eat. Sleep. Breathe. Ski.

I've never really been in a situation where I questioned if I wanted to ski.. I love to ski and I honestly don't kno what I would do if I could never ski again.. so for me going through a situation like that would just help me appreciate skiing more to be

the skier's who pass on to that 'big krispy kreme in the sky' are our fallen warriors. they all deserve the upmost respect and dignity. but someone brought up a good point when they said 'think about your friend, looking down on you, would he want you to stop skiing because of what happened?' or would he want you to rip all the harder?

i've been thinking the same thing, ive had a bad injury and ive been thinking alot too, i know its alot different then losing a friend, but still for a few weeks i decideed to stop skiing. but without realizing it that was all i was talking about. i just dont see how i could stop atleast right now. and no matter how safe you are something can always happen. the mountains can be an escape and provide so mouch joy, but it can also be the drunk driver that runs the red light.

I guess it all depends on your level of commitment to the sport, it's all up to you dude, if your not into it anymore that quit. It really doesn't matter what we think. Do it because you like it. But if it's no longer fun then don't...

my intire crew waited for his ass at the bottem of the hill and beat the shit out of him. i broke his poles agianst a tree, and we snapped one of his skis. fucker got uppercutted so much. he was bleeding from his eyes and shit, crying like a little pussy. i busted out a body slam on his ass and broke both of his arms. the ski patroler broke up the fight and clipped all of our tickets. we where gonna beat the shit out of the patroller but my mom came to pick us up.

skiing is something you can do for yourself, so keep asking yourself, is it worth it? If it isnt that's fine because the only person you ski for is you. Personally there is nothing I'd rather do than to be out on the hill and just ski. The park is great the pipe is great but there is nothing like just skiing. That's the main reason why this site is so popular, because every single person on this site loves skiing or something to do with it. so i'm not going to tell you that you should or should not ski because that's your decsion. I'm sorry about your friend man...Peace
