Is it morally wrong to be a porn star?

its funny how many people say crap about it objectifying women, Im sure all of these people watch porn... cut the crap!

its also not prostitution. Everyone in the act is getting payed as oposed to prostitution where one person pays the other for a service. Its more of an exchange of service in order to create video content.

in moral terms, id say yes, but morality is all opinion, i think everyone has different morals, what is morally right to some people is morally wrong to others

Except this. Now this is objectifying in every way. (if the way they portray it is actually what is going on)

Just a little fyi, prostitution is actually illegal in vegas proper, and is only legal in counties in nevada with populations under 400,000 (weird law i know)

NOT THAT I WOULD KNOW, but it says on the site that it's an act and the girls are aware of what's going on before hand. Also, how is that objectifying women? I'm sure there are all sorts of "try outs" for jobs in porn that require the girl to have unpaid sex.

I agree. I wouldn't necessarily want to be involved or date someone in the sex industry but as long as everyone who is involved is protected I don't have a problem with it.

That being said I am not really a big fan of a lot of the stuff they do. I personally find some things to be degrading, but then again the women are doing it out of their own vocation, so who am I to judge? I just know that I personally would never let myself become involved in that sort of thing because its not me and its not what I believe is right.

i honestly can't think of a single reason why it WOULD be morally wrong. anyone who thinks it is morally wrong needs to open their minds a little and grow up

adults can choose to test experimental drugs, perform dangerous stunts, clean up other peoples shit, and do all kinds of things that others would consider degrading, in exchange for cash. why not sex, something literally all of us want and enjoy to some degree? nobody is forcing anyone to do anything, and if the consenting adult feels that their dignity is intact, who is anyone else to judge?

with nonelastic products, making something illegal only makes it more profitable for a unregulated black market.

My god, I feel like a piece of scum after reading some of your remarks. Wow, the opinions on here about sex and what is "degrading." I mean obviously the acts I perform in the bedroom are not what most people are into but it doesn't take away from my character or my morals.

very good point! Even less extreme janitors clean the shit out of the toilets, pick up garbage, clean after rude people.

its pretty degrading work yet its ok because its his job, he is rewarded with money.

The porn girl does some degrading things but she is rewarded with money and sex.

questions about morality are tricky because morals, by definition, are specific to an individual. so write what you think

lol, im guessing you are in public school? american conservative morality is fucked, if people enjoy or are in someway fulfilled by something that doesn't harm/degrade others what is the problem

also applejuice, what r dese acts u speak of?

oh dang, im curious to hear what people at my school would have to say now. was it mostly girls that thought being in porn was immoral or was it split evenly?

it's not morally wrong, but i imagine it attracts a lot of people with shitty morals. like a read some story about this girl who was new to porn sending pictures of her sucking a dick to her mom and shit. that's just a fucked up person right there.

There's a place in (I think) the Czech Republic that basically merges the porn and prostitution industry. It's a brothel but the men who go there don't pay any money to have sex. Instead, they have to sign a waiver agreeing to let their tryst be filmed and steamed online for paying customers to watch, and the women get paid through those customers. (I saw this documentary on prostitution last night, thought that place was kinda interesting.) Basically it's porn where they only have to pay one of the participants. Brilliant!

Anyway, if you really want to be a porn star I don't think there's anything morally wrong with that, because I don't think there's anything wrong with masturbating. It's natural and healthy and people shouldn't feel bad about it. Don't listen to the whole "every time you touch yourself, God kills a kitten" thing! If you're 18, you're old enough to make that decision (obviously if you're 12 it's a different story), and if it's what you really want to do then go for it. Enjoy your sex life and making your money.

Prostitution is different from a morality standpoint. It perpetuates violence - for example, the documentary I watched said that your average hooker has a mortality rate 40 times higher than the average woman - and spreads disease. Most of the girls involved are doing because they're forced to, one way or another. Overall I think there is very little good in that world.

what defines morally wrong- politicians lie their way into office yet they arent morally wrong for doing it- who cares if you make money having sex, id rather watch that than the presidential debate

But if it was regulated, creating safety for the sex workers, would you be okay with it? A lot of what people find wrong with sex work are things that occur because it is illegal. I think some people are definitely forced into it inappropriately but also I think people are 'forced' into in the way we are all forced into jobs. Sex work for many people is just the work they do, it has nothing to do with them, not any more that someone who works at walmart is defined by their profession. Hence the term sex work.

I actually was thinking about this last night. It's a really tough question. It'd be great to increase safety for these women, of course. It would mean that women may be more willing to step forward to the police if they needed to, if they weren't afraid of being arrested themselves. Ideally it would decrease instances of std's, rape, assault, and murder. But given the clandestine nature of these meetings, how do you really go about helping these women? When sex takes place in a car in a dark alley and the woman is someone few people will notice is missing if she's gone, it's tough to keep her safe when she's constantly going off with sleazy guys, even if the act of paying for sex itself were legalized. Because even if it were legalized, not all women are going to become high end escorts in a monitored business. You'll still have streetwalkers, probably more of them. Not only would it be easier for women to get involved with prostitution if it were legal, but if they have to register with some governing body, they might choose to continue doing it underground to hold onto their anonymity. And I'm concerned that legalizing it would increase the frequency of human trafficking and child prostitution, as the Netherlands saw when they legalized prostitution. So I wonder if legalizing might just be opening a Pandora's box? I feel like it might be the sort of thing that causes more problems than it solves, despite having good intentions.

what is morality really? if religion didn't exist then there would be no reason to even look at sex in a negative manner.

That's the weird thing. I grew up in a conservative household and I consider myself to be a Christian BUT, I don't tie sex to religion in any way. Sure, I'd prefer it to be with someone I am interested in or someone I actually care about but it doesn't always work out that way.

That's a good thing. In my opinion sex shouldn't be looked at as an evil sin that you should only do to procreate. It's natural and if we can do it, it's our right to do it as human beings.

this thread really took off, glad both pink names and blue names contributed and shared ideas, it helped me write my paper

right.. the same reason why gay marriage is wrong, a girl cant be brought up without a loving father or she'll turn to porn

Exactly. Sex only has the "evil" (power) that the individuals partaking in it give to it. Personally I only have sex in a stable and long term relationship because I choose to give sex the power of creating a bond between me and my partner. Whereas someone else may not give it that same power. I don't look down on people for that, good for them, they can have a perfectly normal and physical way to have fun with someone. People that say that sex is "evil" are simply weak minded people.

Not true, Christian religions believe that it's Sex outside of marriage that is negative... Sex inside of marriage is a wonderful praised thing. Just saying.

i understand that, but it's made it a secret that should never be heard, seen or spoken about. Even in marriage. And only recently have schools started teaching about it and even still it's caused a lot of upheaval.

There's nothing wrong about being a porn star. We all get fucked for money, just some more literally than others.
