wtf is up with the east coast right now, its january and its almost 50 out plus we had thunder here last night......can anyone explain to me why this is happening?!????!?!?!?

can it get more east coast than this?!?!?!

oh and their calling for the weather to be like this for the rest of the month, im wondering what it will be like in feb and march??

global warming is a sketchy subject right now to blame anything on this weather thing.......is anyone on here good at weather or know a thing or two why all this is going on besides global warming

yeah it sucks the other week my lessons for work were cancelled cause of lightning and its been like 40+ almost every day

I'm no expert on weather, but I know this much: Last year at this time it was -30 C and today it is plus 6 C. That is damn messed up.

Global warming is a blanket term coined most likely by the media or by scientists before they had done enough research to figure out the impacts of pollution on the climate. This is a common thing that you see in all sciences. (and you can trust me on that because I do know a thing or two about other sciences.) Anyway, I would guess that our bizarre weather patterns are realted to changes in the atmosphere caused by pollution. Now I'm not a freakin hippy but I'd say we should probably try to do something to slow down these climate changes before it's too late an no one gets to ski anymore.

seeing as winters have been getting worse and worse in AK, its global warming. icecaps are melting. they are flooding out the natives up north.

Its not global warming, its annoying when people say that. All of this weather is just happenstance due to random weather patterns that are bringing up warm weather from the south. The average temperature of the earth has only increased 2 degress over the last 150 years or so and global warming does not have much of an effect at all. This warming is not due to global warming but due to the natural cycles of the earth.

global didnt play a huge role tho. mostly the storms going on lately down south carrying up warm and wet wind. with snow we need canadian wind from up north, which we are getting none of just from the luck of the draw. but global warming doesnt happen that quickly i mean last season we had a good season so this year would only be slightly worse than last year. not this big of a difference

As someone said its really all about random weather patterns, although global warming may have a slight impact on the weather it will take hundreds of years before we see a major impact on out world. This is just a fluke, warm weather happens just like we get cold summers sometimes, nothing to get too excited over even though it may be making for a lousy winter.

It's called the January Thaw. It happens about every january --- we have a warm period, and it kills all the snow. But don't worry, it's gonna end mid-next week, and then it will dump again

yes the east is absolutley sucking huge donkey balls right now and im fuckin pissed, my skis are on my car and its fuckin 56 degrees out!

the midwest sucks just as much. TOday is was like 55, i was out in a long sleeve just walking around and i was fine. I'm hurt now and i just hopw my season isn't really over soon because of this horrible weather

yeah its gay especially since we had like one of the best decembers ever and then we get this shit

all of this is probably related to the huge huracane season we had last year which dragged a bunch of warm water up from the tropics

from mad river glen's meteorologist:

The skinny on the pattern is that nothing is going our way. A long-wave trough is expected to become fixed over Greenland thus forcing the NAO deep into positive territory. The jet continues pound so hard at the Pacific Northwest that it is forcing a ridge to develop across the eastern United States and making the situation more dire than the zonal flow regime which was advertised in previous columns. The activity in the Pacific has a La Nina signature about it and the La Nina continues to strengthen in the central Equatorial Pacific. It would be rather fickle of me to blame the evolving situation entirely on La Nina but the ridging south of the Aleutian Islands and the heavy precipitation in the Pacific Northwest is certainly not a surprise given the recent development of La Nina. Arctic air can still involve itself in such a pattern but the bulk of the real chill will remain bottled up toward the pole or on the other hemisphere entirely like in Japan where record snows have been recorded. The situation isn’t being helped by the Arctic Oscillation (AO) which is in the process of finally switching signs and becoming positive. A positive AO means the Jet Stream at high latitudes is less convoluted and less likely to transport arctic air southward. Cold air can certainly sneak into areas such as Northern New England but it will be an ongoing battle with the milder weather which will invariably be trying to work its way northward as long as this pattern persists.

When can we expect a change

In my last column I had mentioned that we might be in trouble until later January and that remains a reasonable expectation. To be frank, there are no signs of a change in the pattern fundamentals or teleconnection indices on the immediate horizon. Typically however, an anomalous pattern has a term limit of 3-4 weeks before giving way to something else. Many times we are surprised and there is a change or even a minor but significant tweek in the pattern sooner than expected which can drastically change the result for a place like Vermont. It is for this and no other reason why I am predicting some sort of change around January 22 nd but until then I would not be optimistic. Follwing MLK weekend, I would fully expect another warm up and potentially another event later next week consisting of a mixed bag of precipitation and maybe even rain. It is also almost likely that we will see more in the way of very mild weather including afternoons where the temperatures exceed 50 much like they will this upcoming Friday. Small victories can and will occur which will include snow and colder temperatures but the pattern without questions favors much above normal temperatures and below normal snowfall for the next 2 and probably 3 weeks.

no offense, but fuck that

....this happens every year....BE PATIENT, i know its hard.....just masturbate more....and its just as frustrating for everyone else on the east coast...next week is lookin up though, low of 17 on saturday night, high of 22 sunday, and low of 19 sunday night....snowguns are gonna be blowing (western ny)

so that kid who just replied with pretty much an essay is saying that the cold air currents from the arctic region have somehow changed to +, w/e that means, which is bad for us because no cold air can be brought down to the north east for like 3 weeks?

you are all dumbasses, global warming will not happen that fast or that extreme, the average yearly tempmay raise one or two degrees a year on global warming, its just a natural weather pattern which sucks for you guys, but here in colorado were like at 130 percent snowpack in some areas, so its just luck mannn

you guys realize that the most real threat of global warming is extreme and abnormal weather patterns that it produces. while average temperatures are going up very slowly, this thaw and the abnormal weather we've been having is likely due to changes in the atmosphere brought about by global warming. look at how much El nino fucks up global weather, and it's just a tiny ocean current. then think about how much power a global temperature change, however minute in terms of degrees, can have over our weather system.

Uhhh...does everybody here think that global warming is strictly the warming of the globe? It changes weather patterns as well, so it would be a legit explanation for the warm, shitty weather that has been going on.

Oh, I would just also like to point out that if you look at how global warming works logically, the earth warms, ice caps melt, the amount of water in the oceans increases etc as the temperature increases which means that more water will evaporate leading in heavier cloud cover which will block out the sun, giving colder temperatures, more precipitation which could in turn bring us into another ice age or at least worse winters than the winters presently.

Thats fairly accurate^^. Global warming does exist, but it is an occurance that happens periodically. It is nothing to worry about. The weather is goofy and unpredictable, that is why it has been the center of converstation around the world since civilization began.

im just gunna say, whatever the reason is, it FUCKING BLOWS. like we have 3 precious months of skiing and this is what we get dealt. it sucks

PLEASE GOD MAKE IT COLD AND SNOWY

You had to go there didn't you?

To answere your question, weather fluctuations are really a normal thing. There was a time when ocean levels were much higher (we are talking about 100+ feet if not several hundred feet higher than they are right now) way back before homo sapiens ever walked the earth. There are definitely cyclical trends in the earth's climate. 500 or 1000 years ago people wouldn't have kept track of the temperatures accurately enough to judge differences over a lifetime, but now we do, and with the global warming witch hunt going on people are quick to jump the gun and blame the evil industrial capitalists or ignorant enough to blame Bush. Don't get me wrong, I don't really like the guy, but you just sound so dumb saying he is to blame. The biggest issue with global warming is whether or not we are artifitially speeding up the process into a warming trend THAT WOULD BE HAPPENING ANYWAY. Even if we are, it is a very very minimal artificial acceleration, but so many of you ignorant people want to blame somebody because you live in an area that wasn't that good for skiing to begin with. On top of this, nobody really bitched if they had a warm winter 50 or 100 years ago. It wasn't till the witchhunt started.

we had alot of rain at the beginning of our season when you were getting your snow, not the tides have turned my friend it is our turn.
