Is it impossible to make it as a skier?

nooo, if you're winning comps, you're making considerable bank. x-games gold alone is 20-25k and that's before the sponsors pay out as a bonus. but yes, there are not many actual pro skiers out there. the rest are just really fucking good at skiing... but then again there out skiers out there that make bank just from movie segments alone.

25k...that can't be right. They were handing out roughly less than 400,000 this year, and with so many disciplines + runner-ups getting payed that can't be true. Maybe closer to 10,000, I thought there was an argument about it when Women's Pipe podiumers got the same cash as Men for like 20% of the effort.

People don't commit their lives to skiing because they want to be pro, they do it because they love skiing. Maybe you should re-evaluate your priorities, if you're willing to be an absolute filthy, broke, starving dirtbag with nothing but a pair of skis and a season pass, you're probably ready for the professional skiing life.

Being a ski bum isn't a glorious lifestyle, you really have to love what you're doing to do it.

Well I wouldn't necessarily say that most skiers are ski bums, very little of the ones who are somewhat making it aren't hitching rides and pretending to wait tables to eat.

Just get a job that gives you time off in the winter, you don't have to be pro to enjoy skiing.

i know for a fact it's that much... also big air 1st place is right up there, if not the same. here's a quick quote i found online... In 2008, the X Games doled out $3 million in prize money for the first time
they also, from what i read online as well, had over 300k devoted just to BMX disciplines.
now i don't know the exact numbers, as they're not straight from the mouth, but if they're dishing out 25k for first and 1k for 10th, they've gotta have that much.

lol outside of x games gold you dont get payed shit. How much do you think third place at a dew tour stop pays??? lol not much. 2 3rd places at dew tour would be a pretty damn good contest year too.

oh yes, 15 grand for first is nothing at all considering its a multi-stop tour. my guess would make 3rd place 5 grand, again before sponsors match it as a bonus. oh yeah not to mention the euro x-games where the payout is the same for the US x-games. face it, if you're a great comp. skier, you can make a TON of money just from that. again this is just comps. and not taking into account contracts with sponsors that can potentially be worth a shit load.
