checked out geartrade.com and a seller by the name of "backcountry" is selling most of the items on the site. anyone know if this is the default seller for the site or if its some dude trying to rip people off?

backcountry uses it to unload used gear, but as for site legitness it depends on the seller. it doesnt get updated too often, its a good place to find gear on and then contact the people seperately.

I got my boots off of there and everything went smoothly. I am not sure if I got it from backcountry or not, but you can always ask the seller or email customer service on the site and they can tell you if that is the default seller.

sure seems legit, talk to mtbakerman if you want more he pretty much stalks that site and has gotten so many rediculous deals

My buddy just bought some 07/08 motherships from backcountry on there for $190. They were kind of beat but not bad for the price. Plus they only charged like $7 to ship to Alaska.

i thought this said 'is gatorade.com legit?' at first glance and i was like 'well yeah they sponsor michael jordan and have like 30 different flavors so of course theyre legit.'

but since you didnt say gatorade...i do not know.

hahaha...i busted up when i read the gatorade bit..good stuff.
rimeknits are sick. i just ordered 3 hats. an acquaintance of mine lives in bozeman and is tight with the creator of rime knits. everyone needs one.

I sold a pair of bindings on geartrade last year. Real easy to use. When someone buys an item, they send money to geartrade who then takes a small percentage. Then the seller ships the item and when the buyer receives it, geartrade sends the seller the money minus the percentage. I cant remember what the percentage is, but it was like maybe $5.

Super legit tho. I had put in a fake address for some reason and they shipped the check to it but i emailed them and they sent another one out that day.

For buyers, it's great. For sellers, it's pretty shady.

The charge 12 percent on all purchases for their commission, and hold shipping charges in escrow until they decide you can have it back.

All of their business practices are tucked into the fine print in the Terms and Conditions of their site, and rather hard to find.

Moreover, once you sell something, they reserve the right to take up to 5.5 weeks to pay you, with no guarantee they ever will actually pay you. So if the seller gets some sort of buyer's remorse, you get treated like a criminal, the seller gets his money back, but there's no guarantee you get your gear back. And you get to leave the commission with GearTrade.

Turns into a shitty deal fast.

Also, they dress all of this up as if they did some sort of work on each individual transaction. In reality, what sellers have to do is surrender all control and credibility to one guy who built a website, who will pay you if he feels like it.

It was your gear. You took the photos. You wrote the ad. You packaged and shipped the gear. You printed the invoice on your printer with your paper and toner. You did the majority of the work in this transaction.

GearTrade just made ghetto check-cashing store fees on your work.

So, if you sell anything:

1. Hope you don't actually want/need the money

2. Be prepared to wait for more than a month to get paid

3. Be prepared to get screwed royally if the buyer gets cold feet

4. Expect absolutely no support from the site's lone administrator.

5. Enjoy Geartrade taking their share, and you getting paid absolutely last, if at all.

Craigslist wins every time.

Everything on there is usually stated what condition it's in, I've bought a shitload of stuff and have always been satisfied. Just thoroughly read the sellers description
