Is Freeskiing Killing Snowboarding?

We're nowhere close to killing snowboarding. We're gaining popularity, but all the new people(unless otherwise guided) still want to be "cool" like the snowboarders.

I think if people were required to watch Tom Wallisch and Simon Dumont before they could buy a snowboard, about half of them would buy skis instead.

Yeah, I'd be ashamed if simon dumont was my inspiration to get into skiing as far as our lineup of pros go.

Your right, Simon Dumont is terrible and not cool to watch.

no. but it is really nice seeing lots of young kids with twintips. a lot of younger kids are staying skiers rather than snowboarding

imo it really doesnt matter as long as you up on the mountain shredding and doin what you love, I just happen to learn to ski and it has become what i know.

Skiing has gotten bigger since like 6 years ago, I know 5 people who snowboarded and switched over

he goes huge in the pipe there damn. yeah i dont know what that kids talking about. the joke was about simon crying when he loses...... also simon is a huge reason why a lot of people freestyle ski. i remember seeing his double superman frontflip and thinking it was the craziest thing ever haha

Wallisch and Dumont? Versus snowboarders like Bode Merrill, Nick Visconti, Chris Grenier, and Louif Paradis? I'd pick a snowboard.

Granted, not many skiers have my taste. (Fact about my opinion, not trying to sound arrogant)

no and i hope it never does. Snowboarding can have all the gapers who dont know shit and try to be "cool" on the mtn. i like skiing right where it is

I find it funny that in the article they called Oakley and TNF as ski companies when they are far, far more diverse than just skiing (and have been for longer than "freeskiing" existed).

They also claimed Quiksilver to be snowboard only, even though they sponsored Candide for a time. Also, did they not own Dynastar and Rossi for a time as well?

whatever.

no freaking way man.....snowboarding is still wayyyyy more popular than skiing. Ask anyone who never skied or boarded. 95% of them say they are going to try snowboarding. We have a long way to go to "kill" snowboarding.

Freeskiing just needs more "big names" with gapers. Everyone knows who shaun white is, and Travis Rice is also pretty popular too. If freeskiing can get some more house hold names then I can see the the trend of popularity shift from snowboarding to skiing.

I think this can happen during in the next olympics. I mean just think about it, if lets say Wallisch wins gold in slope style, he will be getting interviews on pretty much every major television network. Everyone will hear his name and consequentially hear about our sport. But as of now, I think snowboarding is way more "popular".

Skiing is making a come back. But is not quite to the level of snowboarding. Although even my snowboard friends think freeskiing looks cooler than snowboarding.

Skiing just has more to it... snowboarding is just nothing new. they only really have 2 significant stars as skiing has much more.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on that. Take shaun white, I'd say most americans from the ages of 10-50 years old know who he is, then take Tom Wallisch or Simon dumont, maybe 5% of people if that

snowboarding has become super super popular, but the newer generation of 10+ year olds seem to free style ski. so I think that eventually freestyle skiing will beat snowboarding, but i don't think it will ever kill itthis is just my opinion

IMO skiing is great where it's at. There's definitely a lot more free skiers now than there was a few years ago, but still no where near as many as snowboarding. You don't see as many people skiing in the park compared to snowboarders, and that's what I like about it. It's something not many people do, but when people see it they are like "Oh, that's pretty rad, I've never seen that before.

Agreed. At my home mountain about 4 years ago there were way more boarders in the parks. 2 years ago it was maybe 50/50 and now there are way more skiers in our parks by a landslide. Snowboarding is never going to die though.

I wish the two could exist and have respect for the other. However, I just don't think it will ever be like that. I get SO much crap for skiing. All my friends are boarders. Being on here is a breath of fresh air. Literally.

but back to OP, why should skiing have to kill snowboarding? i ski, so obviously skiing is cooler IMO, but freestyle skiing and snowboarding are two incredibly dope sports which shoudl coexist without all this hatred bullshit between them

shaun white is still a dumb fuck though and i hate him

this i don't want all the fucking annoying ass kids skiing i like where freestyle skiing is at, we have a sorta community between us if it becomes as large as snowboarding it will collapse.
