Is Eileen Gu Competing for China Problematic?

That's because they'd literally be killed, disappeared, or imprisoned for life if they tried.

Or the Chinese people know how to work hard.

China also finances their athletes and provide universal healthcare so she's covered if she's injured. The U.S. doesn't fund their athletes and she can wind up with a $800,000 medical bill if she blows a knee.

Again, she's making the right choice here.

Rumor has it Gus is competing for GBR for a sizable amount of crumpets and tea.

You didnt hear it from me tho, just what people are saying

Goddamn I know we skiers grow up like a little bit entitled but come on guys… you actually have absolutely no fucking clue how good you have it right now in the United States. I feel a little sick to my stomach reading through this.

You understand that in other countries you legitimately can’t just say what you want. You can’t do what you want. That in a country like China you have about a tenth of the freedoms that we have here. If you violate what the government wants, your life is potentially in danger. You all just forgot about the Muslims in concentration camps there right now? Yea.. concentration camps… people rounded up and put in them because of their religion… not propaganda, fact. Sorry but the United States is not fucking doing that right now. All of the basic freedoms we have here that you bratty people just take for granted. Smh. Oh and that’s not just China.. let’s try being a woman in Afghanistan right now. Or gay..

To even go a step further… I have a lot of friends in Haiti. In central Haiti, you can’t readily go to a gas station and get gas right now because a huge part of the oil supply is being controlled by gangs with political backing. If you live in Port Au Prince and speak out against them, gang members may come to your house and murder your family. Can you even imagine that?

And we actually wanna complain that our situation somehow sucks in the US right now? Grow the fuck up

all im gonna say is its pretty miserably pessimistic to be arguing which proto-empire is more terrible when one of them at least has some stories of hope

No, not really. She had an opportunity to go to the olympics and she took it. It's hard to get on the US ski team and if you can get that same opportunity elsewhere as someone eyeing to be an olympic freeskier, you'd probably take it or try to work something into your own advantage. It's not that oncommon to take advantage of being a dual citizen. You know how many people with dual citizenships took advantage of killer skiing and border closures during the COVID season? Lots. Im reaching here but hopefully you get my point.

Yeah, but…. China DOESNT allow dual citizenship

The persecution of Falun Gong in China is massive: Brutally persecuted since 1999 and still today. www.Faluninfo.net

Without a doubt there's alot of evil in the world, especially in the US, but I think it's safe to say China is the worst...

Came to power in 1949 and since then has killed over 80 MILLION of its own people! Do a little research on the "Cultural Revolution" in China of you want to know a bit more.

Anyone heard of organ harvesting? That's where the government (CCP) kills prisoners that shouldn't even be prisoners and transplants them to someone who pays enough. Organ Transplant Tourism to China is banned in Israel.

To compare the atrocities of the US to China's is laughable. There's stains on our history without a doubt but you're comparing t ball vs major league here.

Honestly I see it as a betrayal to the US. The only reason why she had all the opportunities she did to become a good skier is because she was raised in the US. She took advantage of all that the US offered (and still does take advantage of it) only to decide to compete for a country where she probably would never have even skied had she been brought up there. She would practically be a shoe-in for the US team (even a couple years ago that was looking obvious) so this is not a matter of her wanting the chance to compete at the Olympics (like Gus who is past his prime and his only chance at competing is to take advantage of his UK heritage). This is her completely selling out.

The Olympics is as much about personal victories as it is about national victories and pride for the competing nations. For that reason I do hope the medals go to athletes who appreciate the place that gave them the opportunities to be where they are today.

Well to be fair, Xi doesn't have supporters storming the Capitol and smearing shit on the walls, less inflation and they're not having issues finding people to fill empty jobs. Eileen Gu is just picking a winner and I don't blame her for her correct choice.

This would make sense if she was a bottom tier comp skier, but she's by far the best women's pipe skier.

So it makes no sense. She would be on the US team easily, you are misinformed if you think otherwise.

People think its funny, saying that its skierman... But it not skierman, because the dude pictured is way too average of a regular everyday bloke who worked for Level 9 Sports in SLC

Could you see the face of a Chinese farmer in the face of her with her rich fashion outfits. Kind of a cringe decision just because of nationality. America is a melting pot of culture. We don’t have one nationality, but I guess she’d be an easy target during McCarthyism submitting to the Chinese commies. She doesn’t really represent the Chinese people tbh. Most of them have trouble getting food once you go outside of the cities that I feel like there would be an honest disconnect because she’s mostly lived in the US so she can be Chinese all she wants, but I don’t think she’ll have a full understanding of the culture.

Dude what the fuck are you talking about. They literally aren’t allowed to protest it’s not bc they’re too busy working??? That’s racist as fuck and just ignorant

leave it to a trump supporter to say that the US is fucked and china is the best when republicans are actively trying to fight against everything china stands for. Dumbasses

yeah imho choosing to represent China and its government is pretty terrible PARTICULARLY in this day and age considering everything the govt is doing

It's kinda fucked. But I like what she says about it, even if I think that's not the real reason.

"Through skiing, I hope to unite people, promote common understanding, create communication, and forge friendships between nations. If I can help to inspire one young girl to break a boundary, my wishes will have come true."

I think that's the sweetest thing to say, and that there was likely help from Xi to write that. I think the real reason she is repping China is that they likely just made her an offer she couldn't refuse. [hopefully she couldn't refuse more because of a bounty than a threat]

And ima gonna root for her regardless. Because she's good! Though I also hope that Kelly brings doubles to the game and makes this a hell of a show.

If xi is writing statements for freestyle skiers then that man has way too much time on his hands

It’s treason then

Well she hasn't invaded the Capitol to overthrow a presidential election based on lies pushed by Trump and Republicans so treason isn't quite accurate.

Yeah. Every time Eileen puts up a W, a sexist racist circle jerk, poorly masked by some PC veil of "not competing for America" pops up about her.

Foreign-born Olympians are super common. Besides, who ever said Eileen doesn't identify with her Chinese heritage? It's the same 50% as her American heritage.

Not what I was getting at. You want to talk about racism and sexism, look at the organization she just CHOSE to compete on behalf of in the olympics. Not saying she should be ashamed of her Chinese heritage or hide from it in any way, but the financial benefits of her decision are clear and obvious. She’s a rich girl from the Bay Area, who just did an ad for LVMH (an abusive luxury conglomerate). Not saying I would tell Louis V to blow themselves if they put a bag in my face but it’s becoming abundantly clear she wants a wider reach(and maximum paper). Also, as someone else mentioned previously, she took advantage of the quality training and facilities of the US Ski team. I doubt she would be as dominant in competitions today had she grown up and trained in China (a country with a historically lacking freestyle program)

Funny how you attack a woman for doing this and yet you remain silent on EVERY OTHER MALE SKIER who are sponsored by at least 1 corporation that violates human rights.

Incels and racists are hilarious.

Pattern of behavior? Oh please, do tell us about these intensive studies you've done to show Eileen Gu is somehow more

privileged than the thousands of U.S. skiers who grew up in places like Boulder, Park City, Aspen and have been enrolled in 20k a year private winter schools and attend 5k a week summer camps for years.

Nobody ever said that skiing wasn’t a hyper privileged sport. But if ANYONE (male, female, black, white, purple)with that kind of upbringing decides to compete for the Xi and the CCP in favor of their home country (for money), they are a massive sellout POS in my book :)
