Is Eileen Gu Competing for China Problematic?

Let me preface this first by saying I think Eileen Gu is an incredible athlete. Clearly she has taken women's skiing to another level and thats cool I guess for the people that are into women's skiing.

While I understand her decision to compete for China given her mother's nationality, her marketability in China as a Gold Winning Skier in a burgeoning snow sports market etc, I still question her judgement and the ethics of skiing for Nation with an Authoritarian Regime that imprisons its religious minorities in concentration camps, censors and restricts the basic human rights of its citizens.

I don't check NS as much as I did 20 years ago, but I find it hard to believe this is only rustlin my jimmies?

I find it disappointing that the switch from the US Ski Team to China is essentially a cash grab/sell out move and it is disappointing seeing these actions taken in a sport that was created by a bunch of dirtbags (I say that with the utmost reverence) who wanted to change skiing from the overbearing regulation and stifling nature of the FIS.

I guess we've officially gone the way of snowboarding

She is very mislead to say the least and yes it is problematic, but only to her own ignorance really. I mean most nations are boycotting the olympics anyways so nobody really gives a fuck in the larger scheme of things. The way she rationalizes her nationality speaks volumes.

It's way less hip to hate to hate on china now-a-days for some reason, even if they still commit unspeakable atrocities.

I could never support someone who was born elsewhere and made an elective decision to represent a country like China in the olympics. (North Korea excepted)

Nah it chill af to hate on the chinese government. all my homies hate winnie the pooh

Shes been traveling to and from China since 2 years old and its hard to say how connected she is or not to the culture without knowing the family. I still think its a marketing cash grab but thats not to say there aren't real legit reasons for her to compete under the chinese flag. She can do what she wants cause id imagine if china allowed dual citizenship then shed be a dual.

This shit was always gonna happen with the skiing being in the Olympics just like any other sport, she just happens to be super skilled so its a big deal.

If the jimmies being rustled has to do with humanitarian rights then its not like the US is a shining example either. Once you lift up the veil of patriotic propaganda and look critically at what the us does and has done globally its pretty funny that we think of ourselves as any sort of moral authority.

Not excusing china's human rights abuses cause theyre guilty of a ton but its bullshit to use them as a reason to judge her for a move that makes sense for her financially as well as culturally. Sucks to miss out on a good medal opportunity for the us but fuck it FIS sucks anyway

Not intending for this to devolve in to a human rights thread since its just one element, but despite its flaws the United States is still the beacon for civilization for the world.

Despite its issues the US still doesn't hold a candle to China's track record of human rights abuses and suppression of human rights

I don’t know her at all and shouldn’t really have an opinion but it just seems like cash & insta followers are her main motivations. Obviously she skis hard as hell and puts in the work. Just don’t like her vibe AT ALL.

A lot of it is new cold war propaganda, same with the news about Russia. We don't get very much international news and it isn't very balanced so it's hard to tell where the truth lies sometimes.

To compare the atrocities of the US to China's is laughable. There's stains on our history without a doubt but you're comparing t ball vs major league here.

Imagine someone born in the bay area takes gold for china over you

id be hating very hard

Lollll. Dude do you know anything about that China is doing? Like, today?

Everyone is rooting for Kelly Sildaru in Slope since the last thing we wanna see is a girl who's an American citizen and has lived a majority of her life here compete for china. That being said who knows what the CCP said to her family...

Also Kelly got injured last year at X games so it would be nice to see her put down a clean run.

What do you want to talk about? Uyguhrs? Hong Kong? China's actions in its territorial waters aka the south China sea?

I'm not an apologist but the fear mongering in much of the western media is relentless.

Well to be fair, Xi doesn't have supporters storming the Capitol and smearing shit on the walls, less inflation and they're not having issues finding people to fill empty jobs. Eileen Gu is just picking a winner and I don't blame her for her correct choice.

i acnkowledge there is a point in most people’s lives where its cool to espouse some alternative political ideologies , but I guess the main question to ask you is :

Would you rather live under Chinese or US hegemony?

The answer is pretty obvious. Holla at your boi when you see caravans of migrants rusking it all for a chance to “make it “ in Ningbo

That's because they'd literally be killed, disappeared, or imprisoned for life if they tried.

It's not that it's less hip, it's that China is a huge economy that most organizations are too afraid to criticize. Look at Daryl Morey and the NBA - he tweeted in support of Hong Kong and China immediately erased the Houston Rockets from the internet and pulled games off of TV. Think the one tweet cost the NBA like $300 million.

Peng Shuai is a more recent example. WTA pulled out of China but most major sports leagues have been silent, they too are terrified of economic backlash.

Real talk do you not believe this or?

I'm definitely trolling a bit but in all seriousness the news coverage in the US is horribly biased and the situation with both China and Russia is much more complicated than it is portrayed.

I'm not in favor of spending more taxpayer dollars on further funding the military build up to protect the US or any other country from the Chinese/Communist/Russian menace.

it was probably a smart move money wise, but china will probably lose interest in her after the olympics even if she wins medals, because they are not holding the olympics again and they probably 'bought' her as a chinese athlete to win at the home games.

It's so sad that americans actually believe this. The US is beacon for corrupt power and swindling your dumb fuck population.

This isn't a slight against the good half, it's a slight against the ignorant obese half of the population.

Do you think people from other countries believe that? The South American countries who had their governments overthrown in US/CIA-backed coups and the countries the US has invaded? I kinda doubt that they do. Not tryna be overly anti-American but let's be real here.

not a lot of Americans believe this you’re just a dumbass who is generalizing

Americans really think they are the epicenter of the earth. But hey u guys are not the ones to blame it's your shitty education-system and the even shittier media landscape in the US. Im not surprised when people think the US Government has only brought freedom to the world when at the same time they think Fox News is good journalism....

Speak to people from other continents about their view on the US and you will see that they might have a completly different picture than you have.

I'm not trying to say that all americans are dumb, thats just stupid. I just observed that some tend live in a bubble. Im also aware that most people do that to a certain extent.

Just try to get your information from as many different Sources as possible, it may change your opinion

Wow you're right. I would have never thought this. Who would have thought different people from different places with different cultures would have different views. I also never knew to use more than a single source of news. Thanks for that, any other brain busters you have for us lowly muricans?
