Is cable worth it?

Right now I have both Netflix and cable. Most of the content I watch is on Netflix, but every now and then I'll watch the news and usually SNL. So is it worth keeping it around?

I have been without cable for about 2 years now. Just netflix, crave, itunes.

two months ago, I bit on a special promotion that gave me cable and marginally faster internet for 4$ more / month.

hands down, its the worst 4$ I have ever spent. Commercials are stupid, and why do they seem to last longer than the actual TV content? Not to mention that nothing is ever on when I want to watch TV.

...the only thing cable is good for is if you like to watch sports... so I have been told. I don't watch the kinds of sports cable delivers... now I have go through the pain in the ass procedure of return the box and canceling again.

I like having cable, but I also enjoy watching sports most times of the year. You can get networks for free through an HD antenna so its better than nothing.

Otherwise i watch premium tv shit like hbo and other good shows on tv, its nice to be able to record and skip commericals on regular channels. But basic cable programing is usually fucking awful so if youre cool with waiting for it to come on Netflix or something then fuck it.

The only thing is its so expensive so unless youre sharing a subscription with roommates it becomes extremely unaffordable for someone under 30.

Yea I totally get watching HBO and what not, I have like slightly over basic which let's me record shows and gets me quite a bit but not HBO or any similar premium content which is pretty lame.

Yea word, I've heard that that too, also of certain apps that let you stream sports off your phone if you have cable but I'm not that into watching sports so the benefits of cable are limited

Being out of the cable game for so long, all the stuff going to Crave and netflix new to me... very awesome.

If there was channel called "last years HBO" on basic cable, i would probably keep it

I mean hbonow is $15/mo not that bad really. They get a ton of amazing movies and have archives of epic shows and tons of great current shows. I will definitely pick up a hbonow account if i stopped buying cable.

yes.

but...only if its lumped in with your internet....cause they'll pretty much charge you $80.00 for internet alone, and if you "bundle" it with cable you only pay about $20-$30 for the internet...I mean...supposedly.

This is the only reason we keep our cable. Otherwise I'd scrap it.

Fuck if you're in a decent city and you just watch TV sometimes to kill some time or whatever, all you need is an Antenna and internet. I watched the god damn superbowl with no problems, caught every new episode of several very good new CBC programs. Hell all I had was my dollarama antenna and an old xbox360 and I was entertained. But then again that was Hamilton and cause of geography you could get a lot of TV and radio channels, also great game and DVD selection at the hamilton public library. For sure should have had internet though. I know from working for Bell they try and sell you on you're gonna save money by getting more services, but that only lasts so long, then you'll be taking the big ol blue Bell dick for your services. In Canada atleast, fuck I heard its worse in the states though, the Comwave dick apparently has very big and sharp spikes for their pleasure.

cable is shit. You can stream literally any show you want on you computer. Such a waste.

Plus all the commercials.. They should be paying you for the right to be in your house.

Sure you can stream shit, but its a crapshoot to stream live TV. I streamed a hockey game the other day with some of my buddies, it was only on NHL center ice, and about 20% of the time we had a functioning high quality stream.

But cable is so expensive. I think we will see more and more networks "unbundling" and offering their network to people without cable subscriptions, just might take a bit longer.

Can be hit or miss. I found a site for sports that usually has a ton of links. Sports imo are literally the only reason to even consider getting cable. That being said, my gripe is more with commercials. I just can't stand them.

Most networks are like you said offering streaming abilities though or they'll go by the wayside.

Indeed, commercials are the fucking worst, but DVR is getting really good these days. In the last like 10 years if you wanted to record a bunch of shows, you needed a TiVo because most cable and satellite providers limited the fuck out of their dvr. Now its pimp as fuck, especially with the X1 system, fuck i can talk to my remote haha. I record everything I want to watch and start watching it like 20-30 mins after it starts live so I can skip the commercials while I watch.

Yea my issue isn't quite with commercials because as ehealth says, you can just record stuff and skip them later

Yeah I'm actually quite surprised with what I used to go through watching TV, the best thing ever now is recording a movie on TV and being able to skip through commercials and watch it, game changer really.

what do u mean by getting an HD antenna? how does that work if u connect it to say a laptop that has wifi internet?

HD antenna hooks up to your TV, there are a bunch of different kinds but basically it picks up a digital over the air signal (similar to old rabbit ears style) and you get like 10-15 HD channels, local networks like abc, nbc, fox, etc. I know people who just put a paperclip in their coax input on their TV and they pick up these channels.

Yea I enjoy doing this every once in a while, especially if there's all the die hards or rocky movies in a row

I mean you can stream tons of TV online through sketchy websites, the only service I know of is sling tv, which is a month subscription.

Ya i know a ton of sites such as putlocker, project free tv, etc.

i mean pretty much any episode of a show you can just google search: [show name] watch free online

i was just wondering about live tv

usually live streams are choppy as fuck and the quality is horrible

I'm doubtful there's a simple solution to doing this on a laptop, there isn't really an input on most to use it as a display, and I think hd antennas require some sort of cable input. This could maybe work on some desktop monitors but I'm not 100% sure about that

no worries, I was jw

I have a really shitty connection at my college anyways, so i doubt id get any type of decent reception. it just kinda sucks not being able to watch cable tv, mainly sports games and such.

you can watch live sports on firstrowsports.eu for free but the quality sucks, it lags a ton, and is super choppy

I do this all the time. So many movies on my DVR. If I see a title I wanna watch, I just set up a recording for later and watch any other time, skipping through commercials.

This is G. What are you looking at per month for this kind of stuff like 75-100 bucks?

Ours too. I don't even know if we can get this. You can bet I'm checking though ahah

Well it depends on your situation. I've lived in apts that have "basic cable included" through the HOA and i paid $10/mo for HD and then another $10/mo for expanded channels, HBO and such was extra too. Now I live in a town house, my buddy owns it, so he just includes all of the utilities in rent, so we have like a pretty standard house setup for cable/internet.

We have ondemand which is about the only way I'd use cable tv. And even then, it's to watch hbo and showtime shows that aren't interrupted by commercials anyway. ps too fucking stoked silicon valley is about to start back up and billions is back on. finally something worth watching again.

Just sign in to your parents nice Comcast xfinitiy package and use their streaming services

Yup, this is a great way to do it, if your parents have a log in. You can basically watch anything on corresponding apps these days.
