Is anyone studying psychology in college ?

im not majoring in psych, but im taking an intro to psych class right now..most intro classes at my school are lecture classes, so i find mine slightly boring and repetitive of what i learned in HS psych. However, I do have some friends who are in upper level psych classes and they seem to really enjoy them since the upper level classes are more interactive and interesting compared to listening to a professor lecture for an 1 1/2 hours
 
planning to major in history after this year, when I go to UBC. I started out as a history major, but though it was too boring and didn't wanna be writting long ass essays all the time.

Psych is alot of fun, super interesting if you are into learning about people the why they are like that, influences on what makes us human and the composition of the human brain and how it works. Super interesting stuff.

Having a really good proff makes a huge huge difference too. I had a substitute for my psych class not to long ago, and the sub was super dull. My proff is amazing, she engages the class in discussion and encourages critical thinking about psychological issues. Amazing course.
 
hahah i was a history major too, then i realized you really can't do much but teach with that. and too much writing.

but anyway.

i've taken a few pysch classes and i really enjoy them. i would have considered it for a major if it didn't require so much school to get a decent job using it. but i really like the classes, not too boring and not to challenging but very interesting to think about the concepts.
 
i'm currently writing a research project paper for the best named psychology course in the world: Psychology 141: Psychology of Mexicans.

Seriously. That's all it is named.
 
I should've given reasoning. I've got 10 friends who majored in psych. Unfortunately, none of them (except the one who has a phd) use their psych degrees, regardless of their GPAs. It's awesome stuff to know, but psych holds almost no value to employers.
 
i did for a while. studied psych and soc pretty heavily my first 3 semesters or so, ended up majoring in something else but i'm very close to majors in both soc and psych if i ever went back.

they were easily the most interesting and entertaining classes i took in college. i'm sure the profs and the courses themselves played into this a lot, but i rarely skipped those classes because i enjoyed the discussions so much. i even enjoyed stats, which everyone always warned me about blowing super hard.

if you really like psych, take a bunch of classes in it, you wont be sorry. but like the person above me said, without a phd you won't do much with it in the "real world". i would recommend at least a double major with something else to help you get a job when you graduate.
 
yeah if I switch to psych I'd be motivated to go for a doctorate, not a problem for me. How are jobs if you do get a doctorate ?
 
I'm a psych minor...

if you went for a doctorate you could go into counselling or research and teaching at a university. you can just go for a masters degree in counselling too. not sure if the money is really good... psychiatrists make good money, but you have to go to med school for that.

im in that right now and its a lecture class as well about 2 hours once a week, im probably going to major in engineering so nothing near psych, but i love the class. ive learned a lot of cool stuff about i guess i would say life, and just a bunch of kinda random things im really glad i learned for some reason. its just another class that helps you figure things out
 
i'm in intro to pysch right now, and its not too bad

lots of memorization, but my prof gets really into his teaching and that of course helps remember stuff

just the other day we were covering drugs and their effect on the mind, and after going around, one person (30 year old lady) had the balls to talk about her drug experiences

than my prof went on to tell an epic story about the first and only time he ever used acid
 
Ya i'm in psych 101 right now.

pretty cool class. mostly lectures...but the information you learn about the brain and it's functions are insane
 
The one thing that really caught my eye to psychology was when we were talking about humans that have a severed Corpus Callosum providing a split brain.

Seeing a word like HE|ART where the line indicates an obstruction of vision. A person with split brain would not be able to put the word together verbally.

The left side of the brain is the verbal cortex, and thus when asked what they saw, the subject would say ART.

When provided a pen and paper and asked what they saw, the left side would still say art, but the left hand would then begin to write the word "HE" because the right side of the brain is more attached to perception and less to do with verbal and language.

Pretty freakin cool story hansel.
 
also, if those people see walk in the left side of their vision

they will get up walk away and then when confronted about it make up some story to rationalize

also the hand antagonism where the hands beat eachother up made me lol
 
My intro to psych teacher was an ex marine and a detective for the philadelphia police force. It was an awesome class, very interesting if you like to pick a brain every once in a while.
 
Yeahhh that two things i neglected to mention. When the right hemisphere does something, the left side is unaware. The left side will begin to rationalize what happend even though it really has no idea of what transpired.

And yes, like you i gained lulz from that second part.

Most irritating when grocery shopping, subjects with split brain will pick something up with their right hand and place it in the cart, only to have the radical and free thinking left hand (controlled by the right hemisphere more geared to perception) place the product back on the shelf, leaving the patient quite aggitated after fighting with him/herself.

Very very interesting stuff.
 
ill be graduating with a psych degree this may, and though its terrifying, im also very excited about it. psych offers the opportunity to work in a wide variety of fields, provided you have the right credentials. its good that you are looking forward to getting your masters and your ph.d. many people are frightened away from psych when they hear they will probably have to do this. personally, im looking to go into HR and talent management, both of which require a ph.d. however, the most important asset in these fields is experience, so i am looking to work for a few years and getting myself financially stable (hopefully) and then going back and getting my degrees. if you really like the material psych covers, id say absolutely go for it, and it wouldnt hurt to double major or at least pick up a minor or two. also, take the time to explore your options within the field because as i said, its very broad. if you have a general idea of what kind of psych you want to do, youll be able to gear your course load towards it and not have to put up with classes about shit you dont have any interest in. hope this helps.
 
ive been searching through threads and thought this one seems like the one to bump. got some good 1st hand info and what not.

i have NO idea what i want to go to school for. been reading the "life plan at 19?" thread. all i know is i need to make a decision quick because honestly, time is running out - im 21 didnt do any higher edcation yet (that was productive at least). i fear ill be 30 still figuring out were i want to START at least and thats not good you know?

i think, a LOT. im inside my head all the fuckin time, i strive to learn about self and improve my being anyway i can. philosophy and psychology are becoming more and more a part of my life just because of how i think. i like learning about the mind, expanding it, taking it different places etc.

just dont know where i can take a psych degree.
 
It really annoys me when people say shit like that. Let me guess... some sort of engineering major? Congratufuckinglations. Ever cross your mind that people take the classes they take because they have an interest in them, and not because they're "easier." People like you come off very arrogant and little; like you need to prove something. No one cares.

I'm an architecture major by the way, so I'm not defending myself. I hear people say shit like this and it pisses me off.
 
and adamastronot makes his inevitable visit on the thread to remind everyone he was an engineering major... look buddy if the whole world were like you humans would have gone extinct about 1000 years ago. go tell mom and dad you can do math im sure theyll give you the pat on the back youre looking for
 
Psych blows balls, go with sociology, you will learn more about why people do things as a whole. Anthropology is interesting too
 
yea thats what i was gettin at. just seemed like a psych plan would be a good start.

dont know shit about anthropology though
