Making beats/electro music. I've been trying but it sounds like ass. I can't seem to put anything together musically. I'm a jazz musician, but I can't seem to put together beats quite yet. Best way to write a certain type of music when I'm having issues with it is to listen to that genre a whole bunch. Definitely helps get you in the right mindset. As for the actual theory behind it, don't try jazz chords, that obviously doesn't work. Except sometimes maybe. Instead use lots of intervals and layered melodies, thats basically what The Prodigy does - listen to invaders must die, you could make the whole thing with a looper and a synth.
And synth = electronic win. No synth = no electronic.

haahahahaha oh my god it totally does.

just keep sticking with it and experimenting, it will gradually become better and you will notice the things you are capable of doing with your equipment.

i've been making songs like M83ish since the summer and every time i make a new one, i find new stuff my synth or software can do! im gonna buy an external soundcard soon, and hopefully i will have my stuff on the interweb in a month or so.

i will definitely be posting it on ns when its ready!

Another piece of advice - You need to practise writing this stuff a LOT before its going to sound awesome. Its like if you just started out trying to write jazz - without an understanding of the sounds, intervals and structure of the music it would be extremely difficult. It just takes time, and if you put in the time you will be rewarded. And as a jazz musician im sure you know this.
