Iran Sentences captured American hikers.

Two American hikers were detained while hiking along the Iran-Iraq border (Don't ask why seems pretty stupid) but they received 8 years in prison for espinoage among other things. My question is why hasn't Obama done something more significant about this?

 
Why should he care, they should have just went hiking in Arizona or some shit. I mean yea I feel bad, but thats kinda dumb on their part.
 
Northern Iraq is extremely peaceful and beautiful, and has been drawing in a surprising amount of tourists since the fall of Sadam. So what does that have to do with intelligence?
 
What laws did they break? They unknowingly crossed an imaginary line, were captured, and because of the simple fact that they are American, were labeled as spies. If the American government did this to someone you would be up in arms about how we are a totalitarian police state.
 
Why should our President invade the justice system of another country who legitimately arrested two morons? We throw up our hands already about how the US is "World Police". Leave it to our embassies to figure out if they want to, it's not Obama's job.
 
So your saying if a someone from up north accidentally crossed into the US, we should arrest them and put them into prison for 2 years? And watch the news.

Its not just another country, its fucking Iran. They are the ones who breed their children to hate Americans. If it was another civilized country being ruled by someone who uses logic and reasoning not blind religious faith to govern i would agree with you.
 
legally, they committed a crime and should therefore serve the punishment, whatever that may be. The sentencing in this case is very harsh but fundamentally it isn't wrong. They crossed a border without permission. That is a crime. It's a crime in America, a crime in Iran, and a crime pretty much everywhere else.
 
Correct, but 8 years in prison in a militant state known for hating Americans should concern the interest of our president. Your #2 should be more evidence to why it is extremely important to get these kids out. War, no but if we need to send in a small force to extract these guys im all for it.
 
The Iranians used this as an excuse to say that the US is spying on them. Are we gonna use this as an excuse to do whatever the hell we want with Iran?

haha we dont detain mexicans who cross the border for 8 years.. holy tits what a burden that would put on our prison system. we send them back. thats what we want here. iran to just send them back.

You forget to mention reaped the benefits of our welfare system, healthcare system, and public school system. All on my tax dollar.
 
Funny thing is, we DO keep them. California spends more money on prisons than education. Guess who helps fill up these prisons pretty quick. Yep, illegal aliens. Around $1.4 billion is spent each year on incarcerating illegal aliens.

Back on topic. Who gives a shit that those guys were illegally in their country? They should have known better. Let Iran do what it wants. Chances are that the sentence will be shortened or charges will be dropped altogether just as last time.
 
The real question is why did he just bypass congress and passed a bill that ILLEGAL immigrants can no longer be deported right away, instead they have to have a one on one interview, and if they have a job are allowed to stay in the US, not paying taxes and getting taken care of?

oh well absolutely, if they get into our borders and steal a car and then get into an accident which they flee the scene of and we catch them, you're right, we will absolutely detain them and rightfully so. but for simply crossing the border the US will NOT detain Mexicans for EIGHT YEARS on account of them being "spies" haha it just doesn't exist.
 
Do you know how long and at some points unmarked the US-Mexican border is? It is well within the realm of possibility for a peasant farmer to unknowingly cross the border to fetch after his herd? We all know you are a butt hurt vet with very narrow minded views on topics. Lets not have your drivel contribute any more to this thread.

If you break another countries laws you're liable to suffer THEIR consequences, even if the nature of the law breaking seems iffy by our standards. Its dumb to argue about what America would or wouldn't do if it happened along our borders. No shit it would be treated differently. We're talking about Iran here, they aren't exactly the poster child for fair treatment and morality...

Also, yeah that area is probably Amazing to go hiking in. Nobody is denying the appeal from a hikers point of view. But that doesn't change the fact that from a common sense point of view its pretty fucking dumb to push the envelope in that area, especially if you're American.

 
We have diplomats to deal with it, when shit get's serious then the president will step in. Not every problem needs to be dealt with by the president that comes by, other people have those kind of jobs too....
 
These people are getting lots of hate but i mean they've already done 2 years in jail waiting and they're gonna have another 8 just for crossing a boarder. Assuming you die old and you live to be 80 thats 1/8 of your life spent in prison. Definitely not on my life plans.
 
as one of the few shredding iranian-americans id like to remind everyone they dont know everything about iranian culture, one of the reasons nothings been done is becuase the hikers were in the wrong? hmm? lets get famous everyone and start an iran - us war by being an idiot on the border.

I talked about money wasted on them. He talked about the smuggling/crime. I'd rather the bastards just be deported than kept in our prison system.
