it's not what we prefer - it's what you prefer. Do you want to sacrafice some memory for a smaller, more compact model with purty colors? or do you want a regular one with more memory, a bit more size, and no color (on the outside anyway)?

i bought a mini and my friend bought a normal within the same week, he probally uses it at least twice as much as me and battrey only stays alive for like 3 and a half hours, his is jst like new

i have had a mini for less than a year and i have broken it 3 times.

the battery life sucks and there isn't enough memory.

go with a regular for sure if you know you want an ipod

 
I got liek a second generation mini with 18 hour battery life, the thing is sick i love it.

if you get a mini, after 6 months you're gonna want a bigger one. having an ipod induces an insane craving for more music.

i have a mini rite now but the only reason i got it was because it had better than the bigger one, but i wish i got the bigger one, u cannot get 1000 songs on the mini that is overrated!(4gb) i dont even have 600 yet and im at like 90% full, its bull shit

 
well when apple says 1000 songs..they were basing it on every song being average of 3:30 or somethin...i had the same problem..mine was fulll with 670 songs..so i sold it and got a 20gb

I have a mini and a regular one. The mini, is my girl's. I have had no problems with either of them except leaving them in the car in the heat> won't play when it gets too hot. But that's my fault because it gets to like 170 degrees in my car during the day.

i have a 40 and a shuffle, my sister has a mini. No issues with battery life, but the shuffle audio jack was broken. apple sent me a new one in 3 days, great service. The shuffle is great for skiing with, you dont even notice its there. but for regular ipods, righ now you can pick up B&W 20gb ones for less, but soon its just gonna 20gb color (299) and 60gb color(399). The 60 is a great value if you can afford it

 
it kinda depends what u want it for....i have a shuffle and its so light and durable and my sis has a regular and its heavy but holds a ton of songs and my friend has a mini and its smaller but still really heavy

 
regular. the minis are a ripoff, well so are the regular ones, but less so. for $50 more you get about 4 times the music capacity, and they aren't even that much phicially bigger. go for a sony network walkman though, they are better.

i saw an ad for those. i don't know a lot about mp3s, but where do you download songs? is there a program to buy that comes w/ songs?

 
I have a 40 gig and it's awesome except for the fact that it's actually battery life is a quarter of what its advertised at. It said like 12 hours and mine lasts 3, maybe 4 at best which is rediculous and drives me crazy.

 
if it is within the first year, and your bettery lasts less then half of its edvertised life, apple will replace your ipod.

you can help preserve your battery life/lifespan by charging your battery up to full every chance you get.

also, turning off the EQ will make your batt play longer. turn down the contrast and the volume.

The minis seem to break down less, yes. Everyone that i know that has an ipod regular (myself included) has had some type of trouble with it.

There are so many iPod's out there that you are going to get a million different types of responses. Some awesome, some not so awesome like ^, but from my experience, I haven't had any problem that makes iPod's any less worthwhile than they are. And quite honestly, the new Dell's are more aesthetically pleasing than the old, but navigating with that damn scroll POS plastic is absolute nonsense, the menu's don't have shit on the iPod firmware. My 3rd Gen iPod bit the dust after a year of using it almost everyday, but Apple replaced it no problem.
