Ipods: Death by Cold.

So i know most people's ipods die really fast when they are cold, regardless of the charge, just because of the temps slowing down the chemical reactions in the Li-ion batteries and stuff.

Unfortunately, oakley made the media pocket on my jacket on the outside of the insulation and stuff, so the wind and cold just whips through my jacket, freezing my ipod after a run or two. Since its on the outside of my body, my body heat doesnt do much to keep it warm, so my pod usually only lasts about a half hour before dying.

Does anyone have any suggestions for keeping it warm and alive longer? I've only thought of like putting it inside of a mitten so it would stay warm longer, or maybe throwing some hand warmers in my pocket with my ipod to try and keep it toasty and alive.

Any ideas would be sick, im tired of wearing my skull candies with no tunes bumpin through my oversized DJ muffs (kidding, sort of).

if its a shuffle clip it to the inside of your jacket. ive never experienced a dying ipod because of the cold with my shuffle

The very first gen ipod nanos came with a small velvet cover, i kept mine and it keeps it working great and it never scratches. I dont know why they didint keep making them

wear some basketball shorts or something like that under your ski pants, i usually do anyways, basically something with a pocket, then keep it in there and run the headphones up your shirt, i do this all the time, my ipod is protected by my snowpants and kept warm by being up against my leg. gets me an extra couple hours out of it. another thing, sometimes when mine dies if i am gonna take a break i turn the heat on in my car and set it on the vent for a bit and it warms back up, theres another hour or 2 of play time also

i had the same problem on my oakley jacket and i just started wrapping my ipod in a bandana and i havent had the problem since

Buy a music player that has a flash drive instead of a smelly hard drive.

I got the new nano and it works beautifully for cold environments. Lasts me a couple days of cold shred on one charge, and I have an Oakley jacket with the same kind of pocket.

It's not the hard drive that is affected by the temperature, it's the battery. My sister's nano lasts about 2 hours when it's -30 C out, like today and a couple days when it's indoors.

yeah the new nanos last forever in the cold, my friend rode for 4 days and left it in the car every night and the thing still didnt die. effing ridiculous.

ill prob try putting it inside my glove liners or an old mitt or something. i usually dont wear anything under my pants (i live in maryland so its never cold enough to, unless im up north or out west), and buying hand warmers every day seems kinda annoying and pricey

Hard drives consume more power, which is why hard drive media players in general have shorter battery life. Add low temperatures into the mix and you become musically denied!

I was JUST about to recommened that, haha. steezy minds think alike.

but seriously the handwarmer thing was a good idea. or just simply screw the media pocket and put it in your pants pocket( not snowpants of course) or im sure there are plenty of other pockets inside the jacket whcih could be used to hold an ipod.

you can buy an auxilarly "AA" batery pack that holds two bateries and plugs into the carge port. I got mine at walgreens or something like that for lik $20

i'm sure someone already said this but laziness prevented me from reading the whole thread.

so, i too suffer from shitty ipod in the cold syndrome, but i've found a way that works 100% of the time even in -temps. put your ipod in your goggle bagthing (sock, etc), and then put a hand warmer in the pocket with the ipod. welcome to the world of skiing with music again! its just great.

might be too simple. i mean theres like 19868970 pockets in it im sure haha. get a new ipod mine lasts for ever cold warm doesnt matter. my friends old one has problems.

plus then you can run into the lodge screaming showing that off and everyone will think your a terrorist wearing explosives. win win

One word: Shuffle
Honestly, get one. You can probably find one on ebay for like $50. I've never had mine die, you can clip it right on a belt loop of your ski pants and it so convienent. Seriously, invest in a shuffle for skiing

i put the hold on even if i'm not skiing, and i rarely have to charge it, like probably every 5-6 days. i guess caus most of the time i don't use my pod, i just listen to music on my comp, but still, using hold really saves battery

thats weird. Probably something to do with the harddrive not the battery being affected by the altitude.

yeah man and put it on the outside so it cuts the wind a little. put some distance between the wind and your battery, ya know?

I put a handwarmer inside a goggle bag in an inside pocket, and my 1st-generation nano still dies in like an hour. Then i just bring it inside and warm it up and it works fine again. So I'm just going to buy myself a shuffle.
