iPod or Rio Karma?

man, I'm so divided between these two. they both rock. iPod is a bit sleeker, the karma has twice the battery life and some cool dj features. what do you think?

ipods seem to be weird to use and if the battery really does go out then they are sless. Plus, the battery life is so important. really, the only important things are durability, battery life, sound quality and being able to fit it in your pocket. And price of course. But ive never owned either.

the software interface is also kindof important. itunes and the karma software are the only two which autosync. I'm leaning towards the karma in that i has twice the battery life more playlist features (auto dj, crossfading between all tracks etc.). and the dock has stereo outputs and an ethernet port for sharing files or even broadcasting music over a network. The ipod looks a bit cooler and is thinner, but also taller. I'm sure I'd be happy with either but it's a real tossup. if the ipod had a 15 hour battery i'd be all over it. but the battery on the karma along with some cooler features may be enough to sway me... we'll see

The story about the batteries dying on the ipods was only for the first and second generation models, so you dont have to worry about it anymore. Add to that, battery life is fickle. I wouldnt base my buying decision on that. My ipod will go well over 10+ hours one time and go for maybe 4 hours another. It depends on the way you use it and cold weather ect.

what's so special about the new net MD's? i have a net md right now and it blows. the software sucks ass and it has to convert everything to atrac3 which takes more time and tons of harddrive space. sony better come up with something decent and simple because right now they are horrible. The only good thing about MDs is the battery life. what is it that's on the horizon that is so special?

fickle? 4 hours of time blows my butthole. even 8 hours is shit. say you were driving to skiing listening to it, and that took an hour an a half. then you skied all day with your ipod, you wouldn't even have any juice left to listen on the way home.

REad what i said. It'll only last 4 hours or so if the light is constantly on, and im constantly searching for songs. That will drain anything. However if im skiing all day playing playlists, ill have plenty of juice for the ride home. Theres no way you can go wrong with an ipod.

ok, to some of your dissapointment i just ordered a karma. thanks to the strong canadian dollar i ordered one from the states for like 335 canadian (compared to 470 canadian if i were to order from futureshop). Things that swayed me were the battery life, wide support of audio formats, price, and dj features such as crosfading all of your tracks and more robust smart-playlist features than itunes. I also got some kickass Sony dj headphones.

I look at it this way. after tax shipping etc. i get the 20 gb karma and the best sony dj headphones for 580 bucks. after tax a 20gb ipod would be around $630. i hope everything works

i like ipods, im listening to mine now, but I have a mac so it makes sense. I think the ipod is alot cooler, and the battery life may suck, but I can always buy a new battery.

ipod, but the only problem is they have battery life deterioration sometimes and apple is real gay about it. i had one of the original ipods and it fryed itself after like 3 months. i was so god damn pissed

The 1st generation and a few of the 2nd generation iPod's had battery problems...the ones that're out now (3rd generation) last for fucking ever.

 
I had trouble with my Ipod battery, but I didn't care b/c Apple was excellent about it. Just filled out a form on their website, 3 days later a box with pre-paid Shipping was in my mailbox. I just put my Ipod in drop box and about ten 10s later I had a brand new ipod. Yes, the battery-life can fluctuate quite a bit, but that is the only bad thing I have to say about the Ipod. I bought the Car Adapter so it really isn't an issue for me anymore, anyway.

thats no true for all stereos, i cant hook it up to mine, and its in no way shityy, in fact its probably nicer than you will ever own, and just like all hi-fi you can hook up other componants not things like Mp3s so dont say someth9ing ithat is so clearly not true. IPOD!

^ do you have any idea what you're talking about? the dock has composite stereo outputs. (the red & white plug things that most stereo's use to connect shit). It should be arriving soon and hopefully I'll be happy with it. Ipod is cool, but 8 hours battery won't last a trip to europe or even a trip to a west coast ski resort for that matter. Not to mention, ipod cannot do gapless playback unless you make your ablbum one big mp3, which sucks. Remember, i was able to buy the karma AND kickass sony DJ headphones for LESS than the 20gb ipod.

Which iPod would i be best to get, have any of you filled you 40Gb iPod's, or do you reckon 30Gb is enough? I want to get rid of the music on my computer as it's taking up too much space, but im not sure if the 40Gb model is worth the extra cost.

30GB doesn't exist anymore, you'd have to find it on ebay or something. The only models Apple is actually are the 15, 20, and 40GB models.

 
man, it's hilarious how so many people are saying 'go for the ipod' when it's apparent that my karma has been in the mail for a while. i also think that half of the people suggesting ipods don't actually own one.

Ok, I just got the Karma, loaded my songs etc. and it basically kicks ass. The 3 second crossfade between tracks is amazing. The other thing i noticed is that it is much louder than the ipod. It can power my sony DJ headphones way beyond a noise level that i can handle. It's also really small. well, I'm happy.

im not buying it because i have a cell phone that almost does every thing the IPod does(yes it plays mp3's).its the nokia 3300 and its the sweet.

Ipod sucks, I hate the way it handles. RIO Karma is much easier to use, get's a better battery life, and sounds better. However, if everyone just got the IRiver IHP-140 than everyone would be happy. Controls are the most intuitive (the little remote is the best), and it even has a second headphone jack so your friend can listen to your music too. Plus, the 140 doesn't need any software. Your computer recognizes it as an individual hard drive and you just drag and drop songs. That's all i really need to say, don't get an Ipod, there's much better available.

Yeah - iRiver is the one to go for if you have the cash. A friend of mine had it for a month or so before he returned it because he was broke. His only two complaints with it were the remote and that the shuffle mode wasn't a random order, but that will probably be fixed soon in a firmware release. I played around with it a bit and it is really nice. Smaller than the iPod I think, but maybe a bit thicker. And it is really nice to use. Check it out if you're looking for a player.
