Thats what I thought too until I got one as a gift, they're actually really nice. Especially if you have a 15" laptop or even a heavier 13" one. I used to carry my computer everywhere and now I vary rarely carry it anywhere except for work.

How is the typing on it? I feel like I wouldn't like it..especially for all the papers I like. Or does it just take a long time to get used to it?? For example if you used an Ipad for a year or two do you think you would start to prefer it over a real keyboard?
 
If I'm not mistaken (and I haven't really looked into it) the iPad supports bluetooth, which means you can pair a keyboard with it if you are doing a lot of typing. That would allow more flexibility for typing up papers and shit like that, though personally I would just stick with a smaller laptop
 
i dont really see the point in an iPad.. like i wouldnt want to type on it and its pretty much the same as a ipod touch with a bigger screen? but twice the price..

I'm an admitted apple fan boy, buuuuuut iPad's are retarded IMO. A macbook is just as portable and can do more.
 
i just saw a news story on it. i am most impressed by the magnetic cover that comes with it and when opened it can fold and snap into a stand. looked pretty neato
 
Well you can actually touch type on it like a real keyboard vs just picking with your finger like on an iphone which makes it infinitely superior for writting quick emails or notes. Also like someone else mentioned the bluetooth support means you can take an external keyboard. (I use the 2 battery mac one) and type with a desktop keyboard (much better than typing on a laptop) which is what I do when I need to write longer reports/emails. Ipad plus keyboard is still a fraction of the weight of my 15" MBP and it has a much longer battery life so I can forget the charger.

The Ipad will never be a computer replacement, it was never designed to be, but its much more than just a big ipod touch.
 
its a really cool tool, especially now that the new ipad has imovie and garage band, and two cameras. its a solid little computer. you can get e-books, microsoft word/powerpoint/etc, watch movies, skype (so cool) and a lot more. its really kinda neat...before i hated on ipads but this opens up a whole new realm i think. its light too.

for somone happy with a great desktop computer and wants something portable, this is perfect.
 
If you want a Kindle that can surf the web, get email, videochat, and listen to music....it's worth the extra money. My girl's dad wants a Kindle and a laptop, but I'm just telling him to get this. For $500 he can do all he would ever do on a laptop and he gets a much, much nicer reader.
Tablets are the way to go for those who don't need much, people with more powerful computer needs don't seem to understand that. I would never buy one, but I can see where they have their place.
 
probably the best gizmo on the market. I'm dumbstruck by all the haters in this thread. The iPad is an absolutely incredible device with unlimited uses. It is nearly impossible to put it down once you have one--they are just really fun and enjoyable to use. The new features on iPad2 make it a must-own for me. Selling my ps3 for this and my windows 7 pc (yeah not even a mac user) will be saved exclusively for torrents (and Im hoping VLC for IOS won't suck with the ipad2's new guts.) I wasn't surprised at all to see nearly ever booth at SIA have a couple ipads lying around to display products, catalogs, presentations, advertisements, movies, demos, and order forms.
 
But the only reason I see to get it over say... a 13 inch macbook is the price. I'd so much rather have a macbook, it's just as portable and can be used in any, if not more situations than an ipad, plus it has a real keyboard, folds up to protect the screen, and just straight up does waaaaay more. Basically that or any netbook. I don't know, I just don't get it.
 
we got my parents an ipad for birthdays/mothers/fathers days. now this one came out, and we might just sell the old one and get the new one. they dont have a computer with a camera, so if we get them this, they can video chat with me and my three brothers.

anyone interested in buying a VERY lightly used ipad 16gb wifi?
 
i think the laptops w/ the flipping screen thing that turns into a notepad/smartboard type thing will be the next big thing. Saw a kid w/ one in my class the other day and that shit is nuts, so cool. One second hes typing up a paper for some lit class, flips it into a tablet thing, and starts taking engineering notes w/ the pen thing.
 
I've been using one for 4 years now. It's really nothing special unless your a total nerd and want your notes exclusively on the computer. I don't ever use the tablet feature anymore, I'm an engineer. I use paper.
