the ipad is the best tablet so far, the touchscreen on the samsung isnt good at all and the blackberry playbook is annoying

No shit Sherlock. They are 2 completely different devices. That's like comparing a bicycle to a sports car. Yeah, they are both machines design for travel, but they both have advantages and disadvantages over the other. I take it you've never used an iPad for any considerable amount of time? If you had you'd know how stupid your comment was.

t's actually like comparing a tricycle to a bicycle. They're essentially the same thing, except one it just a hell of a lot more useful. I'm also more talking about netbooks, which are the same size as a tablet (maybe a touch bigger) and are a million times more useful. You can even get netbooks/laptops with a touch screen than can be swung around so it closes screen up making it identical to a tablet, only still a million times more useful. tablets are a waste for almost everything. unless you work in a warehouse of something and use it for inventory etc. but in that case they're have been dozens of tablets designed specifically for that which are way more robust then consumer equivalents which have been around for years. tablets are possibly the most useless over marketed technological idea this millennia.

Hahahah... seriously man? Netbooks? THOSE are possibly the most useless idea this millenia. We're going to have to agree to disagree here, but I really don't think you get what the purpose of the modern tablet it. Shit, half these Android tablets don't either and thats why they blow so hard.

Laptops and Tablets are NOT essentially the same thing, at least not anymore. Laptops are starting to phase out desktops as personal computers for the general consumer. Personally, my laptop stays stationary 95% of the time. Its hooked up to another monitor, HD and speakers at all times. Sure, its nice that I can unplug it and take it with me wherever I go, but I would hardly call it "portable." I can't sit on the shitter, elbows on my knees, cruising NS on a laptop. Thats where the tablet comes in.

If laptops are supposed to be portable, tablets are ultraportable. Let me give you a couple examples.

If im loungin on the couch, I dont want a big, awkard laptop sitting on my lap, roasting my balls, trying to make me type QWERTY. I can pick up and set down a tablet as I please, hold it any direction I please, poke it with my finger wherever I please, type one handed, bring it closer to my face, etc.....

Another example. My parents have been traveling all over these past couple months, Alaska, Czech, NY.... Did they take their laptop with them? Fuck no. That would be cumbersome as shit. And when they had us over for dinner to show us all the pictures, did they pass the laptop around the table? Nope iPad again.

You honeslty cant try to compare this:

hp-entertainment-laptop-notebook-with-swivel-screen.jpg

to this:

iPad2.jpg.jpeg

the way you are trying to.

^ what IS the purpose of a tablet then? to check your emails when you're eating dinner with the family, while you shit, while you're walking your dog? that is the saddest most disgraceful thing to human society in a whole that I've ever heard. you can't just wait till you're done shitting, or walk over from the tv to your computer to check your facebook? I'm sorry, but that is just sad. I though blackberries were for that. and they can make phone calls. and fit in your pocket.

as for showing pictures at the dinner table? laptop is far superior. I can plunk it down at one end of the table and show pictures to everyone at the same time so you can explain while going through them. it even has a mini remote I can use so I can sit at the other end of the table and change the picture. and while all that's going on I can be downloading a movie to watch in bed/on the couch/in the car/wherever I want, while rendering that video I just edited which i can then burn directly onto a dvd. And i can also hook my camera directly up to my laptop, I don't need to go through a different computer in the first place.

tablets are completely useless. try and prove otherwise. and "because i can check my emails lying on my back" is not anywhere near a good reason.

Like I said man, we'll have to agree to disagree on this. There is no need to try and prove anything. You are obviously hell-bent on proving their uselessness, while I know, from experience, that that simply is not the case.

You've yet to answer the question in my first post. Have you ever used an iPad for any extended amount of time? Im not even going to say tablet, because frankly I think everything else Ive used is complete shit ATM. Not just poke it as you walk by in the store, but actually explore? If not, then you have ZERO say in how useful/useless something is. Maybe YOU don't need it, but that doesn't mean there aren't millions of people happily enjoying theirs.

Not to be disrespectful, but you seem quite behind the times technologically. Netbooks? Burning DVDs? I couldn't tell you the last time I even used an optical drive and Im a professional in the creative industry.

Thank you.

If I want to read emails, browse the web, and show pictures I have a phone.

If I want to run real applications, I will use a laptop. I don't need some overpriced tablet to "fill the gap" between the two.

Ya'll are 'tards. Just because you, a 16-22 yr old raised in the Tech Revolution, who probably doesnt remember not having a PC, don't see the need in tablets, and don't have the disposable income for one, does not mean they don't serve a purpose.

Ask your 50-something father to watch a video on his iPhone. He'll laugh in your fucking face, his eyesight went to shit years ago. Ask him to check his email, he doesnt know where the goddamn power button is on the computer.

You guys are completely missing the point. These aren't a porduct marketed towards you. Apple couldn't give 2 shits if some punk-ass kid doesn't think its a worthy product, they already got you with that iPod in your pocket, they have millions of 30-60's with money to burn who will jump all over it.

>implying everyone owns a Smartphone.

Seriously, you guys who are arguing against tablets, have you EVER used one for more than an hour? Ill go ahead and answer that. No, you haven't.

im not pumped on tablets either but all the netbooks i have ever seen are fucking retarded.

im cool with my 15in mbp and an iphone.

Still waiting for someone to answer this and give me your thoughts.

You guys STILL are missing the point. You are arguing the necessity of something, not the usefulness of something

Are tablets necessary? No, probably not.

Are they incredibley useful at fulling different niche tasks that laptops or smartphones can't quite master? Yes, yes they are.

I have an Ipad 2. I bought it opening day after borrowing my sisters Ipad so much.

Like you finally said here, they are not needed at all. Very few people need any tablet but once people buy one they are impossible to put down. Just like a smart phone, people don't need to check their emails wherever they go, but once you can do it, you can't imagine not being able to do it.

Some of your arguments don't make sense to me though...

"Ask your 50-something father to watch a video on his iPhone. He'll laugh in your fucking face, his eyesight went to shit years ago. Ask him to check his email, he doesnt know where the goddamn power button is on the computer."

I don't know any 50 year olds that don't know how to use a computer and have an Ipad. My grandpa is very anti-technology, I showed him my ipad, he thought it was much more complicated than his computer. Furthermore, if someone is so anti-technology what makes you think they would spend $500 on an Ipad? Try convincing someone it is worth the money when they don't even get on their computer everyday.

"And when they had us over for dinner to show us all the pictures, did they pass the laptop around the table?"

I have to agree with Vinnie here, because having multiple people crowd around an Ipad isn't doable, and trying to explain pictures multiple times to each person as they look at them is annoying and wasteful. But, you can hook your Ipad up to your tv and show pictures that way very easily so that is something that is easier on an ipad then a laptop as well.

@vinnie-What is the point of a laptop? Why would you need to have a portable computer when you could just use a desktop to check your email and do all of your computing needs?

Does the Ipad do anything a computer or smartphone can't do? No, not really, but it is a hell of a lot easier to carry an Ipad around, pull it out quickly, and put it back then it is to do the same with a laptop. Saying that an Ipod isn't useful is ignorant. If you had one you would use it far more than your laptop.

Remember, we are in the second generation of tablets, so obviously they aren't going to be doing anything to extraordinary yet, but in 5-10 years tablets will be very common.

I typed this up on my ipad btw.

I'm actually going to agree with the majority on this one and say that tablets basically do not serve much of a point. However, they are better for those with poorer eyesight and the 40-60 generation. Touching upon nkmo's (I think that's the right name) previous point, I would find a tablet to be trickier for such tasks as warehouse inventory due to its size. An iPhone or iPod touch which can fit into a pocket or waistband carrier would prove to be more idealistic for scanning and portability.

PLEASE ANSWER MY GODDAMN QUESTION! /capslock

The niche DOES exist though, you just know nothing about it. And honestly, probably won't until you integrate a tablet into your lifestyle. Sure there may not be things that a tablet can do, that a laptop or phone can't. But it defintiely CAN do things a lot better/more efficiently.

If you've put your time into exploring a tab, checking out all of its features, and still come to the conclusion that its useless, fine. Its obviously not for you, don't buy one. However, if you are making baseless assumptions about something you have no/minor experience with, you really need to get your head checked. Get off the hate wagon.

Let me tell you a little about myself. Im 25, work full-time as a Designer and do freelance photo and video on the side. I am a poster child for kids in the Tech Revolution. I've had a computer for about as long as I can remember. From Windows 3.1 (do any of you even know what that shit is?!) to OSX and everything in between. I've owned multiple smartphones, I've owned multiple laptops. Safe to say, I have a pretty good idea of what the fuck Im talking about. Not too different from yourselves I suspect?

However I've had the opportunity to log a good amount of hours on an iPad and iPad 2. My parents are 50-60 somethings, not the most tech savvy people on the planet. They recently switched to a MBP and loved it. So much so that my mom picked herself an iPad up on a whim before leaving for a business trip. She travels a lot and wanted something to keep up with her basic computing needs(email, video, apps, browsing). She was so impressed by the product when the iPad 2 came out, she gave the old one to my pops and headed out to the Apple store. Since then I have had the opportunity to use both of them, and I absolutley love them.

If Im at home, doing work at my desk, my laptop is awesome. But thats usually where it stays, on the desk. Its hooked up to a ton of shit that I would rather not mess with. I like that I can take it with me if I need to, but I dont consider it a portable device. It gets hot, its awkwardly weighted/sized, etc..

If Im out and about, need to make some calls, sms, check an email, my phone is awesome. But thats usualy all I use it for, communication. I like that I can surf the web or watch a movie as I ride the train, but frankly touch navigation sucks on phones, and the screen is too small for any useful, rich media presentation.

Haha, that took me entirely too long to write. Disregard.

I like your points though Matt, well put. I see what your saying about the picture thing, I kinda fucked myself on that. I was merely trying to point out the ease and social interaction part of it. I put pics from the SD straight to the iPad, then was able to hand it to anyone who wanted to view it. They could zoom, rotate, scroll thorugh at there own speeds, then hand it off when they were done.

Why are you arguing so fervently about this? You are either extremely stubborn and hate to be wrong, or you just really want everyone to know that iPads are cool.

just to let you know that i hate to see ipads have that much success.

imo its a fucking marketing trick. people like the whole apple thingy and buy it and other producers have to follow it to keep up with it but there was never a market for that thing.

netbooks cost about half of it and are same size and a tad thicker.

i bet you now that 95% of people having an ipad dont need it and dont know what to do with it.

Meh, Im bored at work, its a good discussion. More often than not, people jump on the "tablets are retarded/useless" wagon with ZERO bakcing besides their own opinion. Id rather argue points and present evidence, instead of saying, "Fuck x, its a peice of shit, why not use y, or z instead?"

You can toast bread in the oven, why use a toaster?

I see.

And I also understand your point, I was just curious as to why you took part in this argument because I doubt you'll change anyone's mind. But I've done the same thing with different arguments as well.

I think we can come to the conclusion that nobody really needs a tablet, however, they can most definitely be useful. Its a disposable income thing. Refer to my toast analogy.

As an Ipad owner I can say I just love. i'm travelling quite a lot recently and it's pretty much nothing to carry around to use it as a video player, music player, dictionary, gaming console and everything else. Of course a notebook can do "more", but I don't want to carry a notebook with me all the time.

The ipad haters in this thread will have undoubtedly forgotten defending their coveted laptops in 5 years when they do everything on a pad.

to finally answer your question (i think 1 or 2 others might have) yes, I work for sprint. and unless you don't have a computer of some sort and a smart phone, a tablet is worthless. its a computer without a keyboard, that you have to either pay for service or connect to wifi (depending on the tab, some have both options).

not saying that there isnt some use, because if you're lazy and don't feel like getting up off your ass to go to a desktop, then it's right there. if you're taking surveys or making notes, you can tap instead of write. if you want quicker access to your emails and want to check other info on the web on the go and you dont have a smart phone, then again a tab may benefit you. but almost every person has a computer in their house, and many now have smart phones.

a smart phone (most anyway) can do anything a tab can do, and usually faster on the web. except you're already paying for service, dont have to look for wifi, and might actually get a keyboard. not to mention you can make a phone call or text.

other problems with tabs: no usb ports. wtf is that? seriously? and paying for service that's already available to you (if you have a computer and smart phone). not to mention they aren't cheap and you can't get insurance through any provider.

if you only have a desktop and a basic phone, then i'd suggest a tablet. but from my personal and professional opinion, its much much cheaper to get a smartphone and do basically anything a tab can do with a smaller screen.

and i really liked that video
