not true. you'd be surprised how easily you could get that information. Even on a website that you don't run. there are a hundred different tricks.

do u use hotmail, change the settings so u have to full or complex header, or woteva they call it, i dnt use hotmail anymore, then get the person to email u

failing that go to www.astalavista.com and search around there

last time i chekd there were som tools that stole IP addreses

byt the way, why do u need it out of interest

get some free webspace and create a PHP page witht he following:

&lt?php

echo $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'];

?>

tell him you need to test somethign and if eh could giove you the number that appears when he visits that page. et voila you have his IP address.

I am just a worthless liar, I am just an imbecil, I will only complicate you, trust in me and fall aswell...

Create a livejournal and say something about him in a post. Make sure that you have the option to see their ip adress on their post and when they make a post in your journal, viola, there you have it.

Definately the easiest way to get someones ip.

tell him to go to command prompt in accessories and tell him to type ipconfig... I'd just google it if I were you tho

I think the idea behind this was for him to get this guy's ip address without him knowing.

If you guys plan on sending him to a site to figure it out (and him knowing that he's giving it out), you could just send him to www.whatismyip.com

Or as said you could go to the command prompt (go to start, then run, then type 'cmd'.. which will pull up a simulated dos prompt in win xp. You can then have him type ipconfig /all but you see, the problem with this command is that if he's established in a LAN (which is the case in many home networks or cable modem/dsl) then ipconfig will just output the local ip address.. which will probably be 192.168.0.1 or 10.* , and that won't do much of anything for you.

Or if you're trying to do it without him knowing about it.. just think creatively and find a way to get him to establish a connection with you, and then check 'netstat' in dos.

As said, there are hundreds of ways. pick which one works for you.

Pretty much, any good person involved in security or hacking could completely take over your computer and do anything to it with just your ip address.

Every computer out there, no matter how protected/firewalled you may think it is has security loop holes or open ports in it. Once they have your ip address, they can sit their and try to expose it's weaknesses.

You really don't have to worry about it though. There's not that many people that have the knowledge to do it.. And the majority of those that do, don't use it for malicious purposes or aren't just going to target some random person's pc. 95% of 'hackers' either just know for the sake of knowing and don't use it for destructive purposes or use it to work with companies to help secure their computers.

Good antivirus software and a basic firewall will stop the majority of attacks on your computer.. Because most of the attacks are done by 15 year old power craving 'packet kiddies'.

But like I said. It's something to think about. I discovered a huge security loop hole in xp a few weeks ago that if exploited properly will give you complete control over someone's computer.. and all you need is their ip address. Currently there is absolutely nothing stopping you because you make use of windows resources and ports that windows uses to run itself. Windows will not let you or any software (that includes firewalls, antiviruses) shut it down or stop people from using it.. Because windows uses it itself.

I showed a few of the security gurus that teach at the college and none of them were able to stop me

So it's definitely something to think about.

there's programs that can do it for you

...stick that in your pipe and smoke it!

yeah you can download something called putty to access other computers and transfer files and stuff by using the IP but I dunno how to do it myself so cant help you there

drgonzo, hah. definitely alot of fun to mess around with friends with. But those apps are not going to do you much good when you try connecting to someone in a completely different geographic location and that has adequate protection and firewalls.

Also, PUTTY is just a glorified telnet program. Which has all the same functions as the program that's been coming with windows since the dark ages.. telnet. Go into dos and type telnet, or start | run

| telnet . exact same thing.

if you know their ip address, and have access to the computer they are using, winVNC can be fun...we've sucessfully put it on a bunch of administrative computers...
