Into the mind

watching the trailer for the past year had me so stoked on this movie but after reading these reviews I'm really considering not even buying it.

i bought it last night on itunes and stopped after 50 or so minutes. it was shocking. barely even any skiing. i made my brother watch it who isnt into skiing, because after the trailer i thought it was insane. i was actually embarassed. do not waste your money.

the whole movie is like one big intro. its all over the place. cuts in and out of scenes very quickly. no decent segments. one clip will be a big ak line then the next will be a resort shot. its stupid.

i strongly disliked it.

the film contains only about 30% skiing, 70% landscape shots.

i mean if thats what youre into. but the shots are pretty much standalone photography. yeah they have music going but there was no narration (throughout the whole movie, not a thing), but they could have narrated the landscape shots just to explain some sort of story or whatnot. it was just boring.

Man i can't believe some of you fucking people. To each their own I suppose but come on that film was beautiful.

Anyone who complains about this movie is incompetent. The entire movie is a story and no one narration is spoke. Open your fucking eyes when you watch this shit, don't just go "omg why isn't tom wallich hitting a super kicker?" you kids disgust me.

If you wanna watch urban and park, go watch an urban and park movie.

Into the Mind is an extraordinary display of sound and visuals that absolutely blew my mind. Yes its a "ski" movie but from any other stand point that one of some 12 year old park rat, this movie is exceptional. Talk shit all you want on this movie, if you are you might wanna just go pop on some park edits of your favorite pro and get some more lotion.

Jesus fucking Christ.

Seriously. I am shocked at the reaction to this movie in this thread. By the end of this movie i had a huge smile on my face and all i wanted to do was ski. Ski movies are almost all the same. I buy level 1 and poorboyz movies every year just to support the companies. Last year for example, i didnt and still havent watched sunny in its entirety. Its the same old shit. Same tricks, same places, same people talking about the same stuff year after year after year.

I thought it was fucking impeccable.

While it has been outlined to have left out a lot of what a ski movie is at its core, skiing, the visual elements were so astounding that I thought it was incredible. It seemed to draw a lot of inspiration from Baraka and Samsara. I just loved all of the sound design and cinematography so much. Easily my favorite ski film yet, despite the shortage of skiing itself.

If there was anything I'd ever want to see more of, it would be a dialogue. I really liked the friendly personality of All I Can, and I understand how the style of this film was to take on more of a third person omniscient view, but I think that understanding the riders' opinions and joy would have helped make it even better. It got a little too wrapped up in the visuals that it forgot a human element to it.

Overall, though, incredible.

The concept of personal preference is lost on you, but it's also lost on the people ragging on it for not having enough skiing. Don't think Sherpas ever promised a certain amount of skiing in their movie. It's a simple matter of liking it or not. Writing hate posts on here does absolutely nothing but make all of you look stupid.

So opinionated it's unbelievable. "IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, YOU SUCK AND THIS IS AMAZING IT'S THE BEST, YOU SUCK IF YOU WANTED TO PAY TO WATCH SKIING"

Haven't seen it but doesn't sound amazing.

ehv, do you wear a fedora? I imagine you do for some reason

everyone saying they may not buy it based on reviews is a giant turd. dont let other people sway your opinion. go be a man and buy a ski movie and decide for yourself. in order to have an opinion first you must experience something. you cant build your opinion of other peoples opinion. stop being sheep ya fucks.

Was Callum really that hurt?
Movie was sick. I want more ski porn but in the end I really liked it! When I saw first line of Ian Mac after that injury I was just super happy.

Mike Riddle is in the credits as one of the "Mr Purple's" but he't not in the athlete part of the credits and I don't recall seeing a single shot of a skier in a half pipe. What's the deal there - did they edit him out?

This thread is about peoples thought on "Into The Mind" and they have a every right to voice their opinions, good or bad. I've still not decided if I will buy it or not, but if anything, all these conflicting reviews makes me more likely to, just to form my own opinion. Also, I don't recall seeing any comments regarding Wallisch but maybe I missed the it.

Also there's a snowboarder in a green jacket doing a double in the trailer and there's no green snowboarder to be seen in the movie. What's the deal with that?

I like "that car batman was driving" Aka the Batmobile....

Yeah sure it had great shots and all that kinda stuff but it wasn't for me. I rather watch the 4BI9 movie or for that matter Valhalla.

And come on E-Dog you shouldn't talk unless you can appreciate EVERY piece of "art" EVER made. Not only that but then sit and look at it for over an hour. Sure it was great, but so is interpretative dance if thats what you like to watch. Your someone that should respect other people likes, and dislikes considering your an artist your self.

Shit I guess I'm just a 12 year old stuck in a 26 year olds body that can relate more to a urban movie then a quasi ski movie with a crazy budget.

yep i guess you are. i guess you didn't get enough fast food on the road you just had to leave half way through and get more.... also rendering your opinion unfounded because you didn't even see it.Not to mention that was an early cut of the film because they weren't done the sound score which is a very special element.

& i want to say somethign to you mary'O but i'll try and remain polite.

I'm going to play devil's advocate here and agree with Andy. I have not seen the movie, so my opinion might be irrelevant. However based on the reviews I've read, I sure don't plan on buying it. I'm not a filmmaker, I'm a skier. I watch skiing to see what is new in skiing and get stoked to go skiing, not to see a new standard in production value. Of course, A well-filmed and edited video is much more aesthetically appealing than something shot on a Gopro and uploaded in 360p, but at the end of the day, that stuff is just periphery. It shouldn't be more important or garner more screen time than the actual skiing.

Of course, this is all IMO. Some people like eheath, would appreciate the production aspect of films like Into the Mind, however some people might not, and that's okay.

I agree with this. I watch ski movies to see stunt monkeys jump off of stuff and do tricks. I do not watch ski movies to enjoy an episode of Planet Earth.

Watching Into the Mind certainly made me think of both Baraka and Samsara as well. The thing about those movies though was their simplicity. There was no ridiculous editing tricks and gimics, it was just simple filmmaking that told an incredible story.

I like the idea of into the mind and I am open to a different style movie that may or may not have as much skiing but for me the editing totally ruined it. I felt as though it completely took away from the message or story they were trying to get to the audience. Even when there was skiing and riding, the editing took away from it. The halfpipe scene, with dcp or whoever that was on his knees was just soo over the top that I couldnt even take it seriously and the urban segment was completely ruined for me because of the ridiculous over the tope production.

All I Can was a simple movie that had an incredibly high level of skiing paired with amazing cinematography. It told a story very effectively and made a connection with its audience. Watching into the mind I felt completely disconnected and quite honestly was waiting for it to be over so that I could go to sleep.

I guess people have just other approaches and opinions on how skiing should be seen. Personally, one of the main reasons I love skiing so much is because of the incredible presence of nature I feel when I stand on top of a beautiful mountain. Of course I can enjoy other aspects of the sport, but to me, hands down, that's what its really all about. I go out there to experience just that unique feeling.

And if Sherpas new movie is able to capture that, then I'm fine with it. Amazing skiing is just the cherry on the cake.

It's all based on opinions. Sure, there will always be someone who dislikes something and anyone is free to hate on the Sherpa movie all they want. The comments in this thread hating against the movie are infuriating, I don't care if its someones opinion. For example, the one kid saying it was just 70% scenic shots based on nothing is a fucking idiot.

I'm fine with people expressing thought out opinions about this movie, but just saying stupid shit because your brain can't comprehend what's happening is another thing.

Andy made a very good point and it was well thought out and explained, that's fine. But some kid going "this movie is boring" is beyond my level of tolerance.

Look I dont need to listen to Beethovens 9th in its entirety to know that its not my cup of tea. Unless at the 1/2 way point it turned into 90's alternative I wont really like it. Not to say that I dont appreciate the fact the other people like it, or that its a great piece of music it just not what I'm into.

Even if I had watched the rest of the movie I would get reamed out for being a rail loving 12 year old for saying I dont like the first part.

Considering I wasn't, "on the road" I dont see how you know what my situation of hunger was at the time. I made a decision, watch a ski movie that I'm not really into, or take care of one of my basic needs for food.

Early cut, or remastered blue ray version with 5.1 surround sound my opinion wouldn't have changed.

I see where you are coming from, but why dont you see my side of it? You must have an open mind, and my is closed? Or the other way around?

To me the movie was 10/10, mind blowing and an instant classic. I absolutely loved it and I think their storytelling through skiing was way ahead of its time.

But yes, they were extremely heavy handed with their use of camera tricks, and the shots of eagles, eyes, and the nepali shaman. Maybe 2 years gave sherpas too much time on their hands which led to them overproducing the movie. They had such beautiful shots ... they just didnt need so much messing around with.

I also think they could have made a more compelling narrative if some of the segments were more clearly connected with the chapter titles, story, and over-arching themes of the movie.

fair enough, you replied like a gent and i came out as an asshole.

i do see where you're coming from, i don't agree with it but i can respect it

my humble opinion:

amazing, gnarly skiing (obviously)

amazing cinematography, almost unparalleled (obviously)

interesting, new take/premise for a ski film

on the negative side, I felt it was almost over-edited. I'd like to watch it again, but I'm going to wait a while. I felt like ~20 mins of footage could have been cut, and it would have improved the overall feel of the film.

not trying to hate here, it's an art-flick and I was expecting it to be so, there was just parts to me that almost took away from the final product.

like I said, just my humble opinion and that could change after a second, inebriated viewing.

Watched it again today. Got damn man. Title fits this movie well. You reall have to watch the film. I'm thinking Valhalla or this will be my favorite this year. Valhalla will probably have less amazing cinematography but more skiing.

FUCK.

That was incredible.

However, this has probably been said at least fifty times above me, if you want to see double corks and butters buy Partly Cloudy.

But actually. Where did all the skiing go, because I certainly couldn't find it.

If you want to see: beautiful nature, special effects, climbing, and an old man, this is the movie for you.

If you want to see good skiing at all, as in more than a total of 5 minutes of mediocre skiing, go watch something else.

What's this with people saying there's crazy skiing? The lines they skied and the pillow were insane! I just don't understand what happened to Callum with him backing out of the run he wrecked on.

It's without question much more of a film than a straight up ski movie, and should be looked at as such, and the fact that the story within it (which Sherpas intended for people to develop a variety of perspectives on) is prompting so much in depth discussion on here and in person amongst people who've seen it underscores how different it is from any other ski movie in the past, and is a huge part of the reason why it's so amazing in my opinion. A ski movie that actually makes you think. Who would have thought.

Somebody want to explain the whole Callum gets hurt thing? He did the line, hurt himself, went back skied it again, and then backed out of it at the very end. But him backing out of it at the end makes no sense, since he clearly skied it and ate shit. His journey was the backbone storyline of the whole movie and it made absofuckinglutely no sense whatsoever. Other than that, I loved it

I think the story of the skier in purple is purely fiction, the credits state he was played by a bunch of different people in different scenes

Haha, what a stupid comment. I love how you assume that anyone who doesn't like it just wants completely urban/park film.

The movie was incredibly repetitive. Yes, there are wonderful shots, but it felt that 60% of the mvie was just filler. For the first half I was expecting these scenic shots to lead into something more, but they just led into yet another clip of that guy spinning whatever the hell it was, or some rural village.

At first these scenes were powerful, but as with anything, too much of something causes it to lose its impact. Had they cut a lot of the scenes and (dare I say it) added just A BIT more skiing, it would have been great.

My 2cents.

Well I just watched it and loved 95% of the movie.

I think my love for skiing stems from my love of being in the mountains, I enjoy hiking, backpacking and climbing just as much as I love skiing. I think how much I enjoy these activities is because every time I step foot into a mountain range I am awe struck by just how monumental nature can feel.

I think this is the reason why I loved this movie so much, I was in the mood for something that reminded me of the colossal nature of the mountains and the sport of skiing. Watching most ski flicks I find I get too used to watching people ski huge lines, hit huge jumps and hit gnarly urban rails that everything by the end seems fairly mediocre. Into the mind had a sort of grandeur that I really connected with, it's probably one of the few movies that could make my heart race, give me a true feeling of vertigo along with a sense of adventure all within three minutes of a segment.

If you are going to watch the movie I believe it is absolutely necessary to have a good sound system, you will get so much more out of some of the segments (especially the native american one) just by having a good sound system. It's also the type of movie I feel like you get more out of as treating it as an actual film and not just a ski flick; watching this on your laptop, laying on your couch eating potato chips will most likely end up with you being bored, you need to let the yourself be immersed in the movie.

Bottom line is I thought the movie was absolutely incredible, I can't wait to fully recover from surgery to get back out to the mountains.

Agree a billion percent. It communicated such emotion to me in my love for the GREAT outdoors. Some of those settings were just so incredible, especially the scene where they fly into the BC and land on the frozen lake, absolutely surrounded by massive cliffs.

How did Sherpas Cinema get their name? Are they actual Sherpas making the film or is it just a name? What role do Sherpas play in their productions?

I apologize for the potentially stupid question.

I think the movie is really good, but I do have some thoughts about it:

- sometimes it was to intense, hard to follow and to much trick shots following each other..

- the part with Xavier and Samuel was very different than other parts (filmed by Timeline films??)

- some parts where there was some sweet action skiing shots, the shots were to short..

- Too little shots of Hoji shredding :)

But overal crazy movie, I really like that its different than other ski movies (I also cant wait to see Valhalla), a lot of crazy shots etc etc, awesome work from Sherpas!

It's because when they go out to ski/shoot they bring so much gear with them, it's like they are sherpas carrying massive amounts of gear to base camp or wherever

Mediocre skiing? Please. Callum and Kye blow the doors off, as well as several others. Paying attention to the ridiculousness of the skiing with as much other stuff going on can be hard to see, but if you watch it a few times the skiing starts to blow your mind.
