Hey everyone,Im writing a paper about the influence of the internet on the ski industry. In particular if the internet has made becoming a professional skier easier or more difficult. If you wouldn't mind answering just a few questions it would help me out a ton.

1. What year did you start skiing?

2. Do you think the birth of the internet has benefitted our sport?

3. Do you think that the internet has made it more difficult to become famous in the sport? i.e. Everyone having the ability to post videos, not giving you as much of a chance to be seen.

4. In your opinion has the internet pushed the sport to where it is? Do you think the sport would be where it is without the internet?

5. Has the internet helped your motivation towards skiing? Or vice versa?

6. Do you know someone who has become famous/professional in skiing from the internet? If so who?

7. Do you know someone who has become famous/professional in skiing before the internet, or without use of the internet? Who?

8. Do you think that the way people look affects whether or not they will gain popularity?

Thanks a lot guys

1. What year did you start skiing?- 2 seasons ago. Switched from snowboarding.

2. Do you think the birth of the internet has benefitted our sport?- Newschoolers.

3. Do you think that the internet has made it more difficult to

become famous in the sport? i.e. Everyone having the ability to post

videos, not giving you as much of a chance to be seen.- Nope, if your good and you want to be pro, you'll make it

4. In your opinion has the internet pushed the sport to where it

is? Do you think the sport would be where it is without the internet?- Yes. The internet has just helped it progress quicker.

5. Has the internet helped your motivation towards skiing? Or vice versa?- Yes, it's pretty inspiring

6. Do you know someone who has become famous/professional in skiing from the internet? If so who?- It's mostly by word of mouth. But if a big company sees an edit online and they're all over NS, they'll think about them.

7. Do you know someone who has become famous/professional in skiing before the internet, or without use of the internet? Who?- Watch any Warren Miller film.

8. Do you think that the way people look affects whether or not they will gain popularity?- Yes. If they're insecure.

1. What year did you start skiing?

2. Do you think the birth of the internet has benefitted our sport?

Yes ^.^

3. Do you think that the internet has made it more difficult to

become famous in the sport? i.e. Everyone having the ability to post

videos, not giving you as much of a chance to be seen.

No, I actually think it allows the lesser known people that are still really good allow to be seen.

4. In your opinion has the internet pushed the sport to where it

is? Do you think the sport would be where it is without the internet?

In someways, it definitely has opened up people's eyes to realize what skiing has evolved into. Leaning more towards yes....still not sure though :(

5. Has the internet helped your motivation towards skiing? Or vice versa?

Yes, it has showed me some awesome creative skiing tricks that I try to replicate.

6. Do you know someone who has become famous/professional in skiing from the internet? If so who?

Nope :(

7. Do you know someone who has become famous/professional in skiing before the internet, or without use of the internet? Who?

Nope :'(

8. Do you think that the way people look affects whether or not they will gain popularity?

If they dress crazy enough I suppose it would make them more recognizable, but other than that I think it is just based on the amount of skill they have.

. What year did you start skiing?Started skiing in 1988
2. Do you think the birth of the internet has benefitted our sport?absolutely so. it has made it much easier for people outside the sport to see what it's all about without investing a ton of money to go ski and witness it all firsthand. i think that there are many more people participating in the sport today because of how accessible the internet has made skiing.
3. Do you think that the internet has made it more difficult to become famous in the sport? i.e. Everyone having the ability to post videos, not giving you as much of a chance to be seen.if anything, the internet has made it easier to get noticed. it's not necessary to travel the country and compete in amateur events any longer. all you have to do is put together an edit of shredding your local resort and upload it to youtube. if people like it, they'll spread it around. in no time you can be an internet sensation and have companies competing to give you a sponsorship.
4. In your opinion has the internet pushed the sport to where it is? Do you think the sport would be where it is without the internet?again, the internet has made it much easier for a no-name kid from the east coast or the midwest to get notoriety. because of this, there is much more competition for spots on a team. this just pushes the level of skiing to unthought of heights.
5. Has the internet helped your motivation towards skiing? Or vice versa?absolutely it has. it's really easy for me to chat with people about skiing and watch all sorts of random videos to get me stoked. it's no longer necessary to spend 30 bucks on a single film at the start of the season and watch it 200 times. variety is the spice of life and this definitely holds true for ski videos.
6. Do you know someone who has become famous/professional in skiing from the internet? If so who?Jon Brogan, Tom Wallisch, Mike Hornbeck, Ahmet Dadali
7. Do you know someone who has become famous/professional in skiing before the internet, or without use of the internet? Who?Tanner Hall,
8. Do you think that the way people look affects whether or not they will gain popularity? No, I do not. there are enough people skiing that a different style will appeal to a different group of people. it's not necessary to wear xxxxl clothes to look cool anymore. Banks Gilberti, Blake Nyman, and Max Hill are all great examples of people who have taken the road less traveled with their clothing and style choices.

7. nope

8. nope

btw you gotta ask if you want us to explain why we say yes or no.

1. What year did you start skiing?

somewhere around '97.

2. Do you think the birth of the internet has benefitted our sport?

Yeah, especially the commercial side of it. Salomon Freeski, Travelling Circus etc. are a great advertisement and really wouldn't have been possible without the net.

3. Do you think that the internet has made it more difficult to become famous in the sport? i.e. Everyone having the ability to post videos, not giving you as much of a chance to be seen.

Maybe, but it has also helped people get noticed aswell - two sides to look at!

4. In your opinion has the internet pushed the sport to where it is? Do you think the sport would be where it is without the internet?Yeah, it was going to happen eventually. The internet may have sped it up.

5. Has the internet helped your motivation towards skiing? Or vice versa?

No not at all, I'm stoked to ski no matter what!

6. Do you know someone who has become famous/professional in skiing from the internet? If so who?Nope.

7. Do you know someone who has become famous/professional in skiing before the internet, or without use of the internet? Who?

Nope.

8. Do you think that the way people look affects whether or not they will gain popularity?

Of course! It sucks but people do judge by appearance.

1. What year did you start skiing?

23 months old (still have my ticket)

2. Do you think the birth of the internet has benefitted our sport?

The internet has brought the sport/s together as a community unlike and form of media before it. You can almost instantaneously watch our sports grow and interact with them as they do so. It has also opened up ENTIRELY new and beneficial means for any company involved that has a message or brand they want people to know about.

3. Do you think that the internet has made it more difficult to become famous in the sport? i.e. Everyone having the ability to post videos, not giving you as much of a chance to be seen.

The internet upped the anti for both sponsors and sponsorees alike, you truly have to work for the spotlight. That said it has also opened up avenues for those who just down right eat, sleep, breath, and bleed our sports. For everyone else it allows them to enjoy and interact on a real level with everything they love.

4. In your opinion has the internet pushed the sport to where it is? Do you think the sport would be where it is without the internet?

The sport would evolve with or without the internet, it has proven itself to be an incredible catalyst in fueling the advancement however.

5. Has the internet helped your motivation towards skiing? Or vice versa?

If you need the internet to motivate you to go out and spend time on the snow... your a fucking idiot and should consider new venues in life.

6. Do you know someone who has become famous/professional in skiing from the internet? If so who?

Look at Super Unknown, WE all know someone who has become famous. Traveling Circus, and ANY group of people who devote their time to a brand, idea, crew. The beauty of the internet is we all know them, are they are personal friends? No. But the internet allows us to show our support for those we love and want to see succeed...

7. Do you know someone who has become famous/professional in skiing before the internet, or without use of the internet? Who?

NA

8. Do you think that the way people look affects whether or not they will gain popularity?

Yes and No, this question is a double edged sword. Everyone has different opinions and style and thus everyone tends towards their own. We thrive and partake in an industry that allows for extreme individuality. However our sports are also backed by brands that must make money in order to survive so there is a side to it that pushes certain styles. However if someone is good at what they do, and loves it, THAT WILL ALWAYS SHOW over whatever gear they are wearing, and that is one of the things that makes our sports so incredible.

1. What year did you start skiing?

1997 (2 years old)

2. Do you think the birth of the internet has benefitted our sport?

Most definitely. Newschoolers has definitely connected many skiers to freeskiers.

3. Do you think that the internet has made it more difficult to become famous in the sport? i.e. Everyone having the ability to post videos, not giving you as much of a chance to be seen.

Yes. Now that there are tons of kids out there doing tons of huge style and tech tricks it's harder to be seen through the internet.

4. In your opinion has the internet pushed the sport to where it is? Do you think the sport would be where it is without the internet?

The internet has 100% pushed the sport with all the videos of kids and pros on the internet it would be harder to watch people outside of skiing on the slopes.

5. Has the internet helped your motivation towards skiing? Or vice versa?

The internet, specifically newschoolers, has really help me make skiing from something to do on the weekend in the winter to a lifestyle.

6. Do you know someone who has become famous/professional in skiing from the internet? If so who?

Tom Wallisch (Superunknown)

7. Do you know someone who has become famous/professional in skiing before the internet, or without use of the internet? Who?

All the old shredders like the New Canadian Air Force and guys like Glen Plake.

8. Do you think that the way people look affects whether or not they will gain popularity?

1. What year did you start skiing?
Feb 14th 1992
2. Do you think the birth of the internet has benefitted our sport?
Yes
3. Do you think that the internet has made it more difficult to become famous in the sport? i.e. Everyone having the ability to post videos, not giving you as much of a chance to be seen.
No
4. In your opinion has the internet pushed the sport to where it is? Do you think the sport would be where it is without the internet?
No / Yes
5. Has the internet helped your motivation towards skiing? Or vice versa?
No
6. Do you know someone who has become famous/professional in skiing from the internet? If so who?
I don't know her personally but Kelly Sidaru wouldn't be where she is without the internet. I think all the people wining comps off of video edits especially the groms would be nowhere near where they are professionally with out the internet.
7. Do you know someone who has become famous/professional in skiing before the internet, or without use of the internet? Who?
Yes... quite a few of them. Mostly Big Mountain peoples.
8. Do you think that the way people look affects whether or not they will gain popularity?
To a degree.... If you have talent, you have talent... but I can think of one lady in particular that makes more money than most because she looks hot in a sports bra. I think it matters more in the women's world of things than mens. I'm going to leave out names, but I was asking friends around here if they knew who a certain gold medalist is that lives in town.. and no one seemed to know. Yet they all knew who the skiers that had posed in FHM were...
As far as clothing style goes... I think it's key to look current. You never see pro's rocking 5 year old Columbia Bugaboo jackets... nor do you see the people who wear them become pro. Photos/videos look better when you are wearing fashionable current stuff. Good photos = sponsors.
