Internet piracy

I was listening to NPR driving around in a winter storm recently and heard that the government was seizing illegal downloading websites in many forms, one of which being search engines that don't host illegal files but simply link you to other places that do. The piece raised an interesting question, if the goverment can take over illegal download search engines, then can they take over google?

Dude. The government does control google. Or at least has the ability to when they need to. Just look at china.

well it basically came from the Cold War, The U.S. and Russia were competing technologically and many things that we take for granted, like TV, came from it. So, there were benefits to the war since it didn't develop into open warfare. Anyway, the Internet was one of the things developed. Originally, it was only available to the government, but it was eventually opened up to the public.

what I meant to say was take down, not take over. I'm sure they already have plenty of control like you said look at china. I mean if they can shut down these other sites that simply link people to other sites with the downloads, whats different about google? you type in what you want, you get a link and you download it so how is that not the same thing the other sites are doing?
