Interested in Videography Please Help Get Me Started

Ahhh, yet another skier who had a potentially season ending injury and is now interested in photography/videography. So yeah, I broke my collarbone the other day and I'm pretty much immobilized. The surgeon said I shouldn't be skiing hard until at least March but I'm pretty confident I could safely go skiing with my friends as a full time filmer for them during the latter half of February. Obviously wouldn't be hitting any features and there's no part of this mountain that I would be going on where I'd be even remotely concerned about falling so I've kind of ruled the risk part of this idea out. I'm thinking about pairing my friend's iPhone (don't remember which model but I know it's got one of the best cameras) with some sort of gimbal. Tell me what you think and drop any tips or thoughts below. Thanks!!

Im in the same situation, but I have stayed away altogether from skiing, just because I wanted to make sure I was healing as risk free and fast as possible. My surgeon said that I would not be doing any freestyle at all this year, and I would be lucky to get back on skis before march. I have been sticking to my physio and grinding it out, and my surgeon now says i have about 2 weeks before I am cleared to ski, and do freestyle. Point is, if you stay motivated and do your pt, you will be back greasin and sendin in no time.

Best of luck in your recovery!

I think that's a good way to get started, phones can capture some great stuff, and you won't have to worry about a whole camera setup outside of the gimbal which should be quite cheap.

Focus on your composition, meaning where you're shooting from and where the skier is in frame, find the happy medium between using the same angle a few times and switching up.

While you're shooting try to think of how you want shots to cut together, you'll get better at this the more you shoot and edit. For example if you film a line ending with a jump trick, you may want to shoot the jump trick again from a separate angle. Doing this will keep videos interesting and give you options in the edit with the occasional double angle/same trick twice, b-roll insert, crop-in etc!

if you find you're taking lots of individual shots, it might be easy to lose the lands amongst attempts. Just take a 1 second clip after a good land/bail, with something covering the camera. When you scroll through the camera roll you'll be able to spot the black thumbnail and pick the goodies.

Thanks a lot appreciate it!
