Intense Shinbang / calfbang

today will be 10th day in a row of landing on icey flat landings, spinning onto rails, hiking park for hours and bombing runs switch and my legs are straight up fucked. like they shake and stuff when im just standing waiting to drop in. What do you guys who ski almost everyday do to stop this shit from happening cause its still only preseason... like everytime I land off a rail now I yell out in pain. im thinking my green1080s might have something to do with it

well here is a few things.

1. the 1080 boot isnt a good boot.

2. your boots are probly to big. there not the same as your shoe size.

3. put the power strap under the plastic so that it pulls the liner directly against your skin.

4. the tighter your boots are the better. you need a tight contact to the shin so there is no room for them to bang back and forth

i've heard that booster straps can be really helpful.

but i have to say, I've never had bad shinbang on tele skis, so maybe you should switch over.

booster straps are gonna do the same thing that a tight power strap will. just always put the strap underneath

i use a tight power strap like he says, and i also have used a booster for about 5 yrs, and yes it helps alot. the power strap can put the tongue against your shin, but the elasticity of a power strap keeps it there all the time. you can feel the difference in a power strap, its like wearing a snug seat belt or some shit, it feels snug n secure. plus, your shins should callous up a bit, its only the beginning of the season, theyll toughen up a bit.

Yeah I was skiing for like 3 hours today and yesterday and the same thing happened .... youlll just stand there and your legs wiggle haha ... try tightening your boots and if they are unomfortable then get some liners for them ... if worse comes to worse ... new boots.... although you might try strecthing and stuff, work out your legs

hahaa, i hate when i forget to put liners in my boots, that plastic shell is mighty uncomfortable.

i assume that you're actually talking about custom liners, but those are pretty expensive right?

i have the exact same problem adrian.. 5th day skiing and i cant get outta bed in the morning, and i have booster straps.. i wouldnt want to think of life without them right now (probably be in a wheelchair)

my remedy:

2 extra strength tylenol

3 advil

booster straps

a spliff

Rub Arnica Gel on them every single day until they are at least standable...and when you put it on, it doesn't matter how many times a day you apply it, usually the more the better.

you just gotta wait it out. none of that shit will help it. when you get back on skis make sure your boots are super tight and don't buy such soft boots next time. i reccomend the grey and black technicas. they are perfect, best boots ive ever owned

Be very, very careful though. A few seasons ago I was hitting park really hard, like almost everyday for a month because I was taking a break from classes for that semester. The shin bang started to get worse and worse, but I just kept ignoring it. I kind of figured nothing too bad could be happening. Well eventually I was unable to ski, and I could barely walk. Putting on a ski boot hurt more than anything, and I was out for almost 2 months. So before you laugh at shin bang and think it goes away quickly, it can lead to bad things.

There are lots of articles on the internet about this. Here is one:

http://www.merck.com/mmhe/sec05/ch075/ch075c.html

Anterolateral shin splints affect the muscles in the front (anterior) and outside (lateral) parts of the shin. This type of injury results from a natural imbalance in the size of opposing muscles. The shin muscles pull the foot up, and the larger and much stronger calf muscles pull the foot down each time the heel touches the ground during walking or running. The calf muscles exert so much force that they can injure the shin muscles.

So try exercising the muscles doing something other than skiing. An easy one is to stand and then raise up on your toes. Usually I get shinbang at the start of the season, but it quickly goes away.

make sure your boots fit perfectly...i got boots a size smaller then my shoes and its amazing. with the booster strap and the lack of movement in my boot i havent had a problem with 8 days on the snow of broke ass landings.

calf raises....fill out the top of those boots!

Also it was mentioned above, i think they're called booster straps? yea those should help

skiing with all your weight back. The most drastic case would look like you are in a seated position. Seated position+having your ass poitioned above your tails=backseat skiing. backseat=verybad for shinbang.

yea some people are very mistaken about boots

the looser your boots are, they higher chance of boot bang your going to get. strap ur boots down very tight to stop movement between shin and cuff

yeah today i wore 5 pairs of socks... it was a little better at least i got to session for a while. I guess they were just mad loose before. riding switch all the time seems to do it too

becides your boots and everything chances are your like me and kept putting off working out your legs and all that before the season and now your paying for it...luckly i have not had shinbang yet

well ... 5 pairs of socks is alot but i mean he isnt an idiot you ass maybe he had his boots loose w.e. yeah i know custom soles will change the way you stand in your boot , for the better and it will pull your toes away from the front and kinda mold you foot more to the boot ... i have sole soles that i got at a ski shop ... the guy cut them and stuf to fit my boot its nice ....

Ok, this has been my experience with shin bang, so listen up:

I started getting shin bang about 3 seasons ago, when i started getting into big jumps. I also started cross country the next year. That season of running, i had the worst shin splints in the entire world. Hurt to walk or squat down. Running was so painful. That season skiing was even worse. My shins ached so bad that by summer that year, they still were tender to the touch.

So, i researched. Shin bang can really be caused for a few reasons, although in skiing there are really just two. Style and Gear.

Style: You are correct to think that landings have something to do with it. But its not landing forward, its landing backseat. when you do this, your shins compress back and then snap forward from the recoil, pressing them into your boot. This reeeeeeally hurts. Lesson here: LEAN FORWARD. think this every time you go off something. And stop with the kiddie trails, those fuck you up worse, too much back and forth in the boots.

Gear: This was 75% of my problem. My old boots just didnt fit right. They were race boots, with little flex and no padding. I have sort of skinny shins, so I must need a lot. I bought new soloman 1080 boots (2004) amd then my problems went away. All you have to do is get a boot that feels the best, not looks the best. Tightening your boots does help, but learning to land right and have a good fitting boot is better.

If you have them now, i feel your pain. But theres little you can do this season. If they hurt whenever you touch them, like mine did, then you're pretty much screwed until they COMPLETELY heal. This took me a whole summer. If you keep skiing on them, even with forward lean, you enevitably with push on them at some point, which destroyed all the soft tissue between your bone and skin that is slowly healing. Wait it out.

Dont do socks, stupid idea. This just increases the pressure around your shins. Socks arent ususally that absorbant like foam, and wont pad at all.

Excercies can lessen the pain as well. Try doing toe-ups on a board. Take a 2x4, put it down on its broad side and then balance on it with the balls of your feet, so the rest of your foot is in the air. Then just go up and down on your toes, bouncing. Do for 5 minutes a day and get stronger shins with more muscle (=more padding, less pain).

Hope you found this somewhat helpful!

Well buy some thick Booster Straps and put them on tight as shit. I haven't gotten shin bang once since then.

No.

Custom footbeds won't help if the boots are way too big.

There's no way you should /ever/ be able to get your foot into your boot with 5 socks on. Not only is it moderately retarded to think so, but it's also totally non-functional.

Chances are good that he's like 90% of the other kids on this board that impulse purchase a boot because it's the "in" boot for the newschoolers of the season, much like the "green 1080 boot" was a few years back.

i would take a few weeks off and ice them. half a vicodin and two ibuprofen before a ski day should help too. to prevent this next season get to the gym and do lots of leg excercizes (calf press, squats, etc.) and also do plyometrics. the extra leg strength will help support your weight on landings. i would also go to a shop and have them make sure your boots fit you right.

i hear wearing a stocking helps. like, go into your moms room, and steal some pantyhose. sure you'll feel dirty, but it helps. Wear them over your socks, and you boots will slide on your shin, rather tahn grab it and work it. So this on top of a good power strap or booster strap. i ski pretty much every day in the winter, like 95% in the park, and by the end of the season my shins are soooo bumpy and gross.

hahahaha I seriously laughed out loud.

5 pairs of socks. I can't even put 5 pair of socks in my Sorel winter boots.

You will have a shitty winter with boots 3 sizes too big. I know it sucks but face the facts and get new boots. That is the only solution.

yeah dude i think it is the boots. my legs are fucked up really bad too. its intense. i landed in the backseat and got such bad shin/calf bang. i think i bruis the bone that is under my calfmuscle because now there is a sharp pain when i lean back in them. and that was a week ago and it still hurts, and i had to miss a day with a foot and some of powder. im so pissed

no its what the shop sold me when i switched back to skiing 2 winters ago. I had no idea just listned to them. And When i mean 5 socks I mean 1 ski wool socks and 4 regular white thin socks

Your shop mis fit you! Are you done growing? If you are you need new boots. I know that is not what you want to hear but no bootfitter in the world can make boots 3 sizes too big fit. Footbeds won't help and wearing 5 pairs of socks won't work either. Although it will succeed in making me laugh.

Don't get offended or pissed... YOU NEED NEW BOOTS!!!!!!!!!!

yea im done growing.. but my shoe size is 10.5-11 and my boots are 10 (28s) so they should be fine. I think its just cause im stupid and had my boots as loose as skate shoes for the start of the year. ddidnt realize it until today when i had no movment

Still east... If you can get 5 pairs of socks in your boots they are the wrong size. If they are only one size too big a good bootfiter can snug them up for a temporary fix but as your boots pack things are going to get worse. Good luck and happy shredding!

besides a few of the aforementioned tips (boots that fit, no backseat, etc.) I have a few tips:

1. ICE ICE ICE... 20 minutes on 20 minutes off.... repeat 3 times... drink some beers for a few hours and repeat again.

2. IB Profin... this is probably shin BANG not shin SPLINTS... which means you have a ton of inflamation that needs to go down... in addition to the iceing, loading up on advil, alieve, or some other anti-inflamitory will help... also take some before you go skiing.

3. If you can't afford to take a few days off and have boots as tight as mine... it can help to cut off the foot of some thick thorlo socks... just have the top as a shin guard... this is a decent TEMPORARY solution

4. Get laid... this won't DIRECTLY help the shin bang but it can never hurt (unless your girl is into the whole whips and chains thing)

in the immortal words of vaughn:

PUT VOLTAREN ON IT!!

ice + voltaren= swelling goes down. dont be shy with the shit either, put it on every hour, even while youre skiing/sleeping/in class/in a movie/whatever. voltaren is your friend. it fixes everything except amputation & lacerations. it'll even fix your car if you use lots.

Don't have any experience with them, but isn't this an option?

yea thanks for the tips... im gona ice it today and take some IB and go check out the shop later see. I cant take days off cause we ski everyday its part of the school day. Dont really want to either cause thers some rail jams coming up and i dont want to fall behind

i am going to track you down and kill you. slowly. then feed your corpse to rabid wolves, then feed their shit to dung beetles, then feed the dung beetles to some ethiopians.
