You can now upload 1min+ videos on Instagram with their new IGTV, as if it wasn't already getting out of hand.

IG is just making it harder and harder for other platforms to compete, and clearly seems like they don't give a fuck about everyone else.

Thoughts?

I think Zuck is just pushing the limits of every hes got, igtv aint never gonna overtake youtube.

Yes and no, competition is a good thing but I feel like Instagram wants the monopoly in terms of content, which I think sucks and isn't fair

took a nice bite out of snapchat I'd say. Comes down to demographics. Youtube and Snapchat are mostly younger than us, I'd say college age is the blurred line.

I don't anticipate they will overtake youtube, but they will be successful. The way I expect this will go is as follows- people who are already popular on youtube are going to stay right where they are. People who are popular on instagram will develop their longer form content and present it on IG.

Its damn near impossible to get people to leave that App once they are in it. So build within more, or get frustrated that your 100k followers on IG amounts to 1,500 views on a youtube video.

Yeah well Snapchat deserved it for not selling for 3B

I don’t really see a problem with it

I don’t get all the bitching about Instagram. All the good content gets posted there nowadays. The glory days of NS are long gone and aren’t coming back.

Competition is a good thing for the consumer, not the company.

Does the Apple want people to buy Samsung phones? Does Line want people to buy ON3P Skis? No - not at all, they're businesses and gaining market share is the name of the game. Instagram is just trying to increase their piece of the pie.

I am curious to hear what some of the content creators on here think of this. It doesn't necessarily have the same impact on our small 'ski-world bubble,' but we're currently undergoing somewhat of a 'content arms race' Think about all the shows Netflix, Hulu, HBO etc. are investing millions of dollars into. It's a creators market right now and I imagine new (relative) platforms like Instagram are really helping people make names for themselves. Personally, I can think of TONS of skiers who wouldnt have nearly as much of a following if not for these new apps. Hell, HoodCrew basically shot feature lengths on snapchat.

I'd love to hear from some other members more "in the game" about how this has been effecting the progression of our sport.

I'm curious for how it will develop within the skiing community. I hope longer edits come back in a sense. Either way its not coming back on NS in the foreseeable future, shit even vimeo. So at least there is a chance for it on IG.

The struggle is views. Generally, sponsors value impressions more than impact. I mean to say they would rather know a video was seen by 40,000 people than believe it was the favorite video of 100 kids. Simply because the former is objectively measurable. IGTV will hopefully bring back the opportunity to make some one's favorite edit/movie. Giving longevity to the content vs the disposable feel of it the regular feed has.

I agree with what you're saying on the business side of things, I just think that what Instagram is doing is pretty savage.

For the content side of things, I'm no Hoodcrew or Jake Carney, but I've done a couple edits over the year, and I can tell you this: you don't "need" IG to get noticed. Look at someone like Jake Carney, he barely even posts on IG but people love him, and his "fans" are pretty engaged, and I'm sure they like the fact that he isn't posting 3 times a week, which makes him some sort of "mysterious". Same thing with someone like Delorme, these guys have a really solid core following, which I feel is overlooked if you only look at the numbers

Personally I'm just butthurt because I much prefer hanging out on a desktop when I want to look at skiing stuff rather than scroll through my phone. And we all know this will accelerate the decline of NS content to some degree. Like it has been doing for years. But I suppose I'm in the minority

Instagram already has had its effect on NS, I don't think this new feature will change anything with NS and we made an app for a reason, to appeal to the audience using a smart phone as their priority device.

Why sell for 3b when it's valued at like 17b?

You seem like you know a thing to two about markets, but do you read any tech news? snapchat is hemorrhaging, no one is gonna buy it for 3B when its irrelevant.

It's how it works. Expanding in any direction tends to dilute whatever your selling. McDonalds doesnt sell pizza cuz they're known for their burgers and fries. Expanding into a market that people didnt ask for doesnt usually turn out well. Instagram will make this move but I think that ultimately people prefer to have their social media experience compartmentalized. I wouldnt be surprise to see it not fail but not take off either.

Snapchat operates at a huge deficit, almost double their revenue, but their market cap is still hovering around 16.5b. If analysts that sit pouring over those financial statements value Snapchat at over 5x what the offered sale price was based on a multitude of other factors including cash flow, it'd be dumb as shit to sell

I don't like the new feature so I'm not going to use it. If I want to watch longer content I will search for that content. Instagram is for wasting time and I don't have the time to watch everyones 1+ minute video on IG, even 1 minute videos I rarely watch the whole thing. I guess I have never really been a person that just spends time watching videos on youtube or facebook, I watch top rate videos on NS and really the only other videos I watch is if im trying to learn something.

Yeah I can definitely see that happening. I guess I was just pissed to see Instagram making that move, but at the end of the day, the user will decide how he watches or upload content, and there's a ton of options available so
