Inline Skate Frames That Feel Like Skis

Whaddup NS,

Earlier today I was inline skating and I had a thought... Has a a company built frames that act like skis? Frames that give you the same edge control on rails that we have on skis? I drew up some shitty concepts of what I'm imagining:

Normally the frame is very narrow compared to the width of your foot, and has a small groove between wheelsto slide on. This new style of frame would be about as wide as your foot, and would sit much closer to the bottom of your boot. It would have two wheel wells that would have to sit a bit further down than the rest of the frame (otherwise any little bump you rolled over would cause the frame to grind on the ground). The new frame would be entirely plastic, but would have squared off edges that would allow you to grip into rails.

Obviously soul tricks wouldn't be possible on this frame, but it would feel much closer to skiing... Am I crazy? What about this wouldn't work? Should I find someone with a 3D printer and make a prototype??

These exist already, I’ve seen an image but couldn’t find it quickly

The best thing to do for this kinda project would be to make this mount like a soulframe

Maybe you could just make square wheels that are flush with the frame for like a huge grind block in between the outer wheels for like a super antirocker setup that still feels like what you are doing

Those look really normal aside from the brake, what did he say made them felt like skis?

He custom makes his own boots and works with his ski bootfitter to get them molded. I imagine the shell is stiffer because he said something about wanting them to feel like his 130 flex skiboots

Here are some of my Freeride Flyer photos of the downhill inline skating and downhill derby skating peeps that rode at the Tour de Maryhill 2022:

I rode these frames for a while:

and they didn't feel like skis much. Maybe it the grind block was flat though they would? Hmmmm. Still think you'd want em a little wide though.

I think a freestyle frame with a completely flat grind space would feel really awful lol, you'd get wheelbite really easily and not lock into rails.

I'm not sure why you need edge control in the first place though as grooves in aggressive frames lock you in automatically, whereas on skis you need to use the edge control to keep from slipping too far off the rail. Can you elaborate on the issues you had skating with these normal UFS freestyle frames?

but yeah I've definitely seen images of skate soulplates that are completely open and flat but have an axle for wheels on each end, basically the exact thing you drew. It might have been someone's DIY project.

Yeah they would.

'cos this ain't rollerblading.

it is tho, he's looking for something that attaches to rollerblade boots and uses rollerblade wheels, he's not looking for roller skis

Who paid you to blade, I'm curious

I'm trying to avoid the tiny landing zone/balance point that narrow grooved frames give you. I'm not worried about "locking in" using the groove, I could just use my edges for that like you said. Throwing a 270 onto a rail on blades with an antirocker frame seems deadly because of how precise you'd need to be vs skiing. I also want the ability to pedal/pretzel on blades which I know it's possible with standard frames, but it just doesn't feel nearly as natural as skis.

Ski like rollerblade frames sounds like it'd provide an awful grinding experience.

All the better right? At worst, it might make you a more precise skier.
