i got back surgery this summer to correct my scoliosisi now have 2 foot and a half rods, 14 inch long screws and 6 hooks, all steel in my backmy 6 month point is december when i can ski againi was just wondering how easy it was for people to get back into skiing after a major injury such as thatthanks a lotpeace

+++ Vibes your way!!! I have it too. Mine was never quite bad enough to have surgery on. Back then, if I had surgery, I would have been in full body traction for almost a year. If you look at the pics on my profile, there is a pic of a back decompressor that I made in my garage. I spend about 20 minutes a night laying on it and it is actually fixing my curvature. Yours must have been pretty bad to need surgery. Sorry you had to deal with that. Just stay positive and work through it, and you'll be back. I'm sure they are going to say "no big air for awhile". Work your way back into it gradually. Don't do anything that will put you back under the knife again.

Scoliosis is a childhood condition where you have an unnatural curve of the spine. They used to put kids with scoliosis in these huge back braces. If you want to see what they looked like, rent Sixteen Candles. If the curve is bad enough it can cause internal organs to not function normally. The surgery to correct it that thread creator is describing, basically involves fusing most of the vertebrae in the spine. The dude's essentially going to have rebar in his back for the rest of his life. Thank god mine was never bad enough to have that done. Let's just say, a mute grab for this guy will probably be impossible.

+vibes to you, that sucks. I broke my back 2 seasons ago and imo back injuries are the worst because everthing we do involves the back. Just stay positive and stretch a lot, its amazing what you can do for yourself.

yeah i was born with ityour physician is supposed to check for it every year with a physical but mine never didi discovered i had it when in soccer i thought a tore a muscle in my hipmy physical therapist discovered itabout bending it shouldnt be bad because i know some woman who are gymnasts still after iti had two 50+ degree curves so yeah it sucks but it is better now living without the daily paini probably wont ski much park this year but its nice cause i moved to UP michigan so i will have some good midwest pow and trees to ski lolthanks for the +vibes everyone

well this raises the question "are they permanent?" +vibes on the recovery man. thall fucked himself up twice and got back in the game. you can do it after just once

From what i understand, yes its permanent. Im not trying to be negative. You have to have some sort of gameplan if you expect to make any headway with an injury like that.

they are not necessarily permanentbasically what happens is the de-curve the spine into a more (not perfect) straight form then add the steel for support, after that they "sprinkle" bone fragments into the spine which will strengthen it in placeafter a year the spine is fully fused the hardware does not become necessary but it stays in unless you get an infection then they would go back in and remove iti had an s curve and they only fused the top one so i have full rotation on the bottomand like i said i have family friends who had it before it was as advanced and they can still do back bends and stuff with just a solid less flexible rodso with a lot of stretching and physical therapy i will be finemaybe better cause i was terribly un-flexible in the first place

whoa dude, + vibes

my best friend went through the surgery in i want to say march of 2009 and he is completely healed and has been since june/ july but claims he cant run still
