injuries at blackcomb

There were two fairly serious injuries this weekend at the Blackcomb highest level park. There may have been many mitigating circumstances but most notable were the extremely recent major changes to the terrain features.

Most notably the shape and position of the booter lips.

Yes, we all know that you are supposed to 'ski through first' and inspect everything, but this was an event weekend and the competitors felt the pressure of making every run through count towards practice for the Sprite slopestyle.

There was significant enough change to the Hut Jump that people were overshooting it badly. Most notably Austin Ross, (local phenom) who dropped in on his very first run through, to warm up with a misty 7, which he can do with absolutely no problem, hit the new, flattened down lip with far too much speed.

His trajectory took him well into the flat bottom past the jump.

He suffered a concussion, broken Ulna, broken radia, and I believe broken Scaphoid. He had to have surgery last night to put his arms back together.

Something has to be done about making major changes on such a grand scale throughout the park.

This is a perfect example of how inept the mountain is. People have been hitting the same features all week, and then they go and change them the day of the comp. If they think that they are making it safer, then they must have their heads up their ass. What makes you think that changing the takeoff is going to make it safer? Its just going to fuck with everyone else who is used to it, hence austin getting hurt. Build your features and leave them the same throughout. Last year i got hurt in a comp because they changed the takeoff, thus severely overshooting the jump and landing flat. So now with a season full of athletes getting hurt, we have another athlete(not just anyone, a potential superstar) getting injured. It pisses me off and as i am out right now with a torn mcl, im sitting watching the flies drop. Do not throw in a wild card like that, you are only going to cause more injuries, rather then prevent them.

A sign would be nice and simple to do 'Park Updated' or something of the sort so everyone knows to inspect first.

Though skipping an inspection run no matter how much info you have on the jump is always risky as has obviously been proven.

so on his first run that day he threw a misty 7?

i only got one run through that park before my comp runs and i still straight aired my two jumps. im definitley not saying he deserved to get hurt, but that was kinda silly of him

^^ There is a big sign at the top that tells you that the features change constantly and that you should check it at the beginning of the day and throughout the day. Its a big one that says STOP READ THIS FIRST

Well first let me address some things.

Austin is an extremely capable skier.

The trick he was attempting on his warm up was as natural to him as straight airs are to some of us.

The jump is one he has thousands of jumps on.

He is a very very intelligent person, who is rarely wreckless, He took the opportunity to watch several competitors hit the jump first.

Yes, he probably should have made an inspection run.

Nobody argues that.

The big complaint is that the way in which the park was changed (hit made SMALLER) and the amount it was changed (drastically) immediatly prior to an event was borderline negligent.

With the amount of traffic the Blackcomb highest level sees there has to be some sort continuity,

No teefa,

You have not been here in ages, as you mentioned in a post. But imagine that your local hill took one of the biggest booters and the day before a comp, moved it thirty feet closer to the knuckle.

We are very fortunate that the course was not held on the other side of the Highest level (riders right), as the last jump was shortened by that amount,

and looking from above, it is not apparant.

I am just saddened that the mountain, who although provided an awesome groomed condition course, did so by massive change.

GET WELL SOON AUSTIN!!!

but he def shouldnt have gone for misty 7 first hit. i know hes confident with his skiing. ive seen him do that trick first hit in the morning before too and it boggles me that somone can do that without looking at the jump first, let alone jumping it once or twice to judge speed. but ya, it is a huge fault on blackcombs part for changing the jump day of. that was retarded, but at the same time, austin prob should have checked it first...

they really shortened it that much?

it did seem kinda small for being the legendary shack booter

Hope his injuries weren't as bad as first described, and that he gets well soon with a minimum of rehab.

I'm an idiot. I should definately have checked the jumps before doing tricks but I just wanted to get some good training runs in... All well. Injuries happen, it's just part of the sport. I'm just glad that it wasn't my neck, back, legs etc. I'm happy to see support from you guys and I just want to tell everyone out there that it is YOUR responsability to check the jumps and rails before you send it. I hope no more people get injured... Thanks, I'll see you up the hill in a couple weeks!

No you are not an idiot. The events crew change the park the night before the comp and then give you 1 practice run before your comp run. Its fucking stupid. I have now had three bad injuries in blackcomb's lacking park. Sure its one of the best park's in Canada, but there is still so much room for improvement.

how bout yesterdday. friday the 13th. fucking total carnage in the park in the moringing. had to bring a chopper in and land it on the shack booter to heli somone out. then i ski down further and there is two people gettin taken down on meat wagons. i just skied in the park bout 10 days in a row and the jumps and everything were pretty consistent day to day.

No one is going to argue that the park has it's share of injuries without directly appreciable causes.

the original rant stemmed from the fact that the sudden and extremely exagerated changes were instated IMMEDIATELY prior to a competition. There is an exagerated level of personal pressure on a competition day, people are NOT skiing just for their own enjoyment, people are skiing with the mental position that every run they make has to be beneficial. Either for getting a score, or preparing to get a score.

The Park will continually change, and this is a good thing as it prevents it from feeling stale through the year, but there should not be a whole revamp of the park completely.

I wasn't gonna say anything, but doesn't it seem like an abnormally high number of people have been hurting themselves on blackcomb this year. And not just in the park, but all over the place? Are people just going bigger and faster all the time, or has it been a bad year for injuries?

I think maybe its because last year the conditions were pretty shitty, so people are trying to do all the things they didn't get the chance to last year... who knows...

^ yeah that's a good point

Last season was shit and last month I tried a 3 on a double black jump over roated and busted my leg and smashed up my face. It was great

I don't know if that is statistically correct, but it is an interesting personal observation Jib_this.

I can check whether this is fact and I will do so when I am next in town.

I have a feeling that statistically though it will be no more than normal. I think though that there is an increased sensitivity to noticing injuries this season as several well known skiers had early season injuries. The level of injuries in the pro ranks are definetly up and one can attribute that to the massive increase in competition and film pressure these atheletes are facing.

Five short years ago there were a small handfull of people on any given ski hill who would even think of attempting what they had seen in current videos or top level competitions.

Now there are 11 and 12 year olds performing at levels near or equal to some pros.

This places a huge pressure on the top competitors to innovate or exagerate.

Along this same line of reasoning though maybe it is having a trickle down effect and it is leading to people trying to push their own personal envelopes more than in previous years just to stay even close to current...

Interesting to say the least.. Now I really want to know the statistics...

^I'm sure I'm wrong, or at least I hope so. It would be interesting to have an idea though. And yes, competition and skill level at whistler seems to be pushing everyone, from the shittiest skier up to pro. It's almost like no matter who you are, you have to be going balls to walls all the time in order to keep up, or you get left behind. Injuries happen, but they suck.

every night the takeoffs/tables get groomed by a cat....there aren't people out hand shovelling, so sometimes its pretty damn hard to be precise with 15 foot blade and a 13 ton machine. Especially if the takeoffs needed to be rebuilt, it's up to the driver to eye up everything (no fancy lasers or measuring tapes or shit like that). It sucks that Austin is out for the season, but injuries happen in the park. The first thing everyone should do is inspect all features before hitting them, especially if you understand how they are maintained every night.

well today my bro got hurt in the HL park.

girl_jibber,

I don't think that there is anyone here taht does not understand that.

The beef stemmed from the timin og a MAJOR revamp of the entire park.

It was a major revamp I assure you. I work there.

I have huge respect for Stu and all the groomers who help make the HL and other parks possible. I just question the judgement of ths scale and the timing of the revamp.
