Influenza

apparently 50% of my highschool has the virus already, and the other 50% is GOING to contract it. this is what the doctor told me. shouldn't the school be closed for this?! it's like an epidemic.

Yeah north van is getting hit hard with this shit. They closed Carson for a day to clean it out because 1 in 7 students at the school had it. 1 in 10 people have been missing at my school from it.

yeah wtf so many kids have been sick lately.. including me.. i've had the worst sore throat and cough.. in the last 7 hours i've had like 11 bottles of water.

i got it too and had to go the hospital because i kept puking up my advil and my temp was at 104

Here's the lowdown.

The expect the avian flu to hit hard. I go to UVM, and they expect it to be here by late February.

If ANYONE gets sick anywhere within 50 miles of an international airport (i.e. Tokyo, London, Rio de Janeiro), we go home for the semester. All professors are prepared to take their classes on-line.

Basically, out of 10,000 students here, they expect 1,700 to get sick and about 40 to die.

In the world, they expect 5% of those who contract it to die. Scary shit.

Get ready, stock up on duct tape and chicken noodle soup, because if it hits I'm thinking that the only things that will be kept open will be hospitals.

yeah i'm freaking the fuck out right now. i live in the same state as uvm and go to boarding school where shit spreads so fast. we could potentially have several deaths at my school, one of which could be me
so if we apply the same math to your calculation, it means that if you divide the number of kids at the school by 5.88 you get the number that would be infected and then divide that by like ~42
so at my school there are over 600 kids. that means around 100 would be infected and like 2 would die. so based on this i would have a 1 in 300 chance of dying from bird flu. probably riskier to drive for 5 minutes

I dont think anyone should be to worried about a flu killing 5% of the population. Even though it willnever happen. If it did happen, it would be a good thing. The world is so fucked up now, if we lost a bunch of people it would only help.

Thats true. Im not really afraid to die, I have been so sick were death could have happened. So whats another sickness. It will happen, when it happens be it Thursday at 437pm or 40 years.

haha that was my reaction! When we came back from winter break, we had a floor meeting and this was the first thing our RA prepped us for, haha.

And those numbers are based on PAST epidemics, so they are just estimations. They are not concrete - could be more, could be less.

And it's happened before, too.
