Increase Space for Icons.

if you compress the icons right you can get more than enough quality in 2k for a 50x50 icon. Having it at 10k would give you a lot more room to create some sweet animated icons though

If you are using photoshop, you can do a Save for Web. This will allow you to adjust the quality tab while watching the filesize on the bottom left of the save window. You'll be able to get it to exacatly 2KB with pretty good quality.

Also try switching for jpeg to gif. This helps too.

About the bigger icons, i think this might slow down the site, primarily for those users on dial-up. If everytime to went into the forum and had to load 50 10KB icons this could start to add up. And, it's just unneccessary.

gif destroys quality for me though. 10 k is a good amount, ithink even AIM allows like 5ish. You could have a ball with 10 k...

no, they mean keep the icon the same size but for a bit better quality/animated icons u need more, i agree we need it at least up to 5kb but 10kb wud be great

and for whoever asked about if sumthing wud slow down the server, the server wud be rite evan if it hosted biger files, it may slow a little bit but not much, its just that it wud slow down the laoding for dial up internet people, be fine for the broadband ppl tho, but i rekon it shud be done anyways, its just and incentive(along with billions of others) to upgrade from dial up to broadband

yes. but you almost must understand that many people out there still run 28/56kmodems.. the lower icon size is keeping the pages running faster.

Think of how long it will take (figuring the icons aren't already cached int he person's memory) to load a page with 50 replies on it. That's 50 icons. 50 icons @ 10k, is 500k. It would noticeably slow things down.

The low icon limit keeps things running quick and saves alot of bandwidth
