In the market for a road/touring/commuter bike, and know nothing

So I want a bike, something fast, something light, something that I wouldn't mind rolling on for 15 miles or so (to school, to the nearest town, maybe to work, if I work). Once in a while I might go on a bigger trip (30 or so miles), and the roads in my town can get a little rough, so keep that in mind. The highest price I'll pay, including shipping, is $400. I'd much prefer to spend only $175-200, but I have no idea whats quality and whats not. Thats another thing. It can't be a total piece of shit, I ride pretty hard.
[This isn't intended as a WTB thread, I would've thrown this up in b/s/t if it was, but hey, if you have a bike that matches my criteria, I might be interested. I'll trade my skis at the end of the season for it even. Keep in mind I don't have cash in hand.]
Thanks

Try and find a used Specialized Tricross on Craigslist... they are super burly and can handle anything.. at cyclocross nationals I was like jumping barriers and airing out a 3 foot bank that you were suposed to ride down.. sick bikes..

I thought I would hate the drop bars offroad due to my Downhill background. but I actually did like them after a while. And I rode 90% of the time up on the hoods and not on the drops.. but I learned to like them.. cornering in the drops is wayy more fun then on a flat bars because it puts a ton of weight onthe front and you can lean in way more then on any bike out there..

you can usually find a nice cheaper road bike on craigslist for about 600. sorry man, anything cheaper than that is usually either really old or a piece if shit. and this is from experience, you may find yourself in a situation where there is a bike for 400 that fits your needs.
