anyone else get this feeling?

im 23, i skied my first mountain day of the season yesterday at at mount snow, and im wrecked today. im in decent physical shape, i dont go to the gym or anything, im just in good shape. i dont stretch or anything before i ski, but im deffinetly gonna start this season, cause today im destroyed. i skied 140 days last season and barely felt like this ever

question:

anyone whoes been in this situation, what different things did you do that helped? im deff gonna start stretching regularly even if im not skiing, i think more hydration would help, anyone have any suggestions activity or diet wise?

yeah, skied all yesterday. im so hurt today, my back is killing me, and last night my right leg was hurting a lot. I was quite suprised that my shins didn't hurt at all. I needa do some back stretches or something

Yeahp day after tomorrow I will begin stretching and joggin. I will finally be in one places where Im not moving all the timeso I have time yayyy!

I started jogging about a month ago to get into shape. Hopefully it worked, goin skiing at Mt. Snow netx weekend.

I run a few times a week and do some push ups and sit ups. nothing too intense, but it should keep me fit enough for when I start skiing again. it's always a good idea to stretch.

Ahhh, the good old first day soreness.

I'm in really good shape this year from biking all summer, we'll see how that translates though. I bet I'll still be sore from opening day.

As one of the oldest "freeskiers" that I know, I think I can testify that it simply happens to your body. As you get older your cardiovascular system and muscle retention goes way down hill. I will be 27 this season and definitely feel it. I remember being able to case large hits and take terrible falls on rails and be fine the next day or the day after. Nowadays I fall on a tiny table and it hurts for a week.

So you wonder what you can do? THere are lots of good exercises online to get you in-shape for skiing. I personally recommend lifting weights in combination with cardio. WHat does that mean? Example: do a hard set of lunges with weights, then go run stairs for about 2-3 minutes. Then do some walls sits of squats, followed by a 4 minute rigorous run. Jumps in combination with up-downs are a great skiing exercise.

Stretching only helps so much. It is not that your body is too tight, it is that it has less endurance and doesn't recovery as quickly. YOu just have to work hard to counteract those things if you want to keep freeriding.

Also as someone who has had a lot of injuries I just want to say be wise with your body. I am still having a tough time coming to the reality that maybe I can't do 35+ foot tables anymore because if i case it or bail then I will probably get injured. Most of you young-uns have no idea and are probably laughing at that. Just wait until you are 27, have a full time job and don't work out much.

This is so true, but I bet even younger skiers would see a lot of benefit.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who always learns tricks way, way faster in the spring. I always figured it was just because the snow is soft so it's not as intimidating to try something new. But I'm convinced that it's also largely because you've been working your muscles (legs, stabilizer muscles, back) all season and the muscles are a whole lot stronger. It makes so much easier to stomp your tricks easily without thinking about how bad it hurt and how much more it would hurt if you landed on your side or something.

People always note that pros don't lift weights (some do actually). But when you're skiing every day of the week there is no reason to lift weights when you can just work those muscles by actually skiing. For people who ski only on the weekends, though, lifting weights helps so much. Coming back from an ACL tear this year just reinforced that the difference between really strong muscles and stabilizers is like the difference between night and day.

your body has to get used to the physical strain put on your knees and the rest of your body, but it alwyas a good idea to stretch may sound kinda lame, but youll ski better and feel better the day after

haha, it was actually a joke because he doesnt smoke at all

but serioauly greg you havent skied ina while, you skied all day im guessing give it a little bit so your bpdy can get used to it, im pretty beat too from hiking and skiing a half day so give it time

your getting OLD....haha youll get used to it, the physical stain it puts on your body needs for it to be adapted but damn you skied a lot last year

I ran cross country this fall until last week and I skied yesterday and my ass and my back and my knees are dead.

im gonna start stretching tons, before, during and after i ski, then when im not skiing too, deffiently going to over hydrate myself too. i guess weights would be good to help my body absorb impact, but i think its gay so im not gonna lift any

the main thing for me was my back 2 years ago so over the summer at the gym i relly worked on it and making it strong. Really helped
