Yes I agree, the site has changed. It used to be a place where kids could be comfortable with their ability levels and engage in trick tips and such. There are plenty of these kids still on the site who are like this, but too many who are free to rip on someone that sucks. Anyone who "sucks" is someone who is just trying, and remember at one point all you "sick" kids blew ass as well. We all did.

On the contrary, NS has been a beneficial thing to the sport, even now through the bullshit, because it is how kids stay updated on the sport. Young skiers want to know when events are, they want to see videos and pictures of fellow skiers, and be updated on what the new jump and rail tricks to try.

Through all the kids that post bad criticisms to the insignificant type of stuff like what music you listen to the site has been more beneficial then not. When you browse through a video or picture and look at the comments there are usually a great deal of good comments, even if the shot or trick isnt that great. Although there are maybe 10 kids on a certain shot who rip on it, there are probably another 100 or so skiers who saw it and appreciated it and got motivated to try something- or even got an inspiration to be more creative in our sport. NS has been the site where not only skiers get together, but other people in the industry. Young film makers, photographers, designers, entreprenuers, everyone is on the site. Even guys who work in shops and tune your skis.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a NS hugging bitch and I hate how many whack kids post insignificant things just to show their friends they made a stupid post, and I support Jacob's post 100% but also think the beneficial sides of the site should be reviewed.

i would also like to say that people are always talking about how our sport wouldnt be what it is today without tanner hall, while that is true i feel that the same holds true with newschoolers.com

yea I was pretty much thinking what you said for a while. What you said was well said, and I though I would just add on a little bit.

The relative few who do allude back to the "good ol days" of NS, when it was like a community, are referring to a different NS. Not entirely different, but back when sometimes zero people were on, posts were stagnate, and whatever. People knew eachother by name, skied with one another, and so on. But that shouldn't be a surprise when a site only has a few thousand members (or less). There are over 70,000 members, and NS has intertwined itself to be an intergral part of the industry, so of course things are going to change. NS still remains a pillar of skiing even though it has been plauged with the inevitable shitheads. There is hate, and very witless contributions, but that alone shouldn't over-shadow the pretty significant and meaningful contributions from members that occur daily. It takes effort to sift throgh some of the garbage, but is it really that bad? Other sites for sports don't usually have a face, but NS does.

To outright "quit" NS doesn't make much sense to me. I can understand frustration, but this hasn't turned into a junkshow. Anybody is hard pressed to find such a diverse community of freeskiers and info, news, media of freeskiing. It has its shorfalls, but it has its strengths. Some seem to forget that.

yea totally. its lame how people cant post vids of their progress because theyll get flamed on.

The site is the shit. dont get me wrong, people that talk shit and post rude things should be not permitted to post anymore. thus no more problems with hate. and then we can get back to what the site should be about.

Yeah I was just thinking about that from the thread of the guy jumping through the heli. That link to the video got into Freeskier and it really makes you think how tied up NS is with everything else in the industry. From film companies putting on display of their movies, to ski companies reading threads on ski reviews and seeing what people think of the graphics, and to help point out design flaws. NS has been great to skiing and yet has been also bad. But in the big picture you just cannot deny that the good things this site have brought wicked out weigh the minor, immature comments that some of the members make.

I’m new to the NS thing (joined just in fall 2005) and have been skiing since I was 3years old. Skiing to me was never about who had the latest what and what trick is popular. Hell, I throw Lincoln loops still. There has definitely been a shift, trend (whatever you want to call it) that kids(not sure what age bracket) are more concerned with clothing and apparel and who’s got what than who accomplished what, what terrain is worth checking out, what terrain parks are pumping. I think that in order to keep respect from the industry, NS should fix a few things... for instance, change ski gabber to skiing news or something of that nature and if posts and threads are negative and out of context... delete them.

Now granted, this would be a gigantic task but with technology today and a little common coding, filters can be set up that remove posts based on certain words, like curse words and derogatory remarks and comments. This could eliminate a large amount of posts and leave NS clean and fresh. (Keep in mind that these filters could always be monitored by NS users as well... set up a “submit something to the filters” if you feel a comment is out of line… and it will be taken care of.

Its a shame to see highly respected skiers who we all look up to see this forum as a joke (in regards to JW) and find no point in sticking around... but we do have to consider that the internet here is not like china and censorship is apparently against some amendment(USA). I would love to see these forums actually discuss current ski topics and ski equipment but I just can’t see that happening when 10-15yr olds feel the need to act very immature just to get a reaction unless a filtering system is established and banning individuals is done.

Now I’m sure this has all be stated before but as more people post comments like these.. It may deter those individuals responsible for ruining this site from posting nonsense (or at least we can hope.)

Regards,

B.D

Yea NS is still a great thing besides Jacob if NS is growing, so probly is the freeski community = Jacob gets a bigger paycheck!!!

just put this on the stickied thread and delete this. you're point will still be viewed and counted.

but im a hypocrite, so here is my little saying. i think that NS is amazing. it gets people connected and helps. ive noticed with the increasing numbers of freeskiers has come more....trash talking on the hill. we all used to be pretty chill. i know i still am friendly and will ask another freeskier whats up and hows it going. its like having a brother out there in my mind. well, thats all changing. now you talk to some kid maybe, you get one word answers, he hasnt heard of NS, and then he skis off. why not ski together. freeskiing used to be a novelty. now freesking is catching on, the brotherhood is dying. NS preserves the brotherhood. i dont know how long ill stay on NS, but as long as possible is my mindset.
